I know I live in the crappiest residence hall on campus. It is 95 years old, and can't be demolished because its survived to the point its actually protected by a "historical building" plaque outside the front. They're "remodeling", but so far that simply consists of replacing a few sections of particularly putrid carpet, as well as the repainting of the window frames. In contrast, the other dorms could pass for Marriots.

I know that people puke and do silly things when they get drunk. Heck, it's quite hilarious and a little bit sad when you see half a dozen handles crammed into a recycling bin, or some friends do their best rendition of Don't Stop Believing. Puking isn't particularly great, but that's generally fixable.

Then there's things that leave lasting scars. Puke can be wiped up. Hangovers wear off. But breaking stuff doesn't.

There is ONE table in the parlor (the common area). It is the ONLY table that is a good height and size for studying. In our rooms, the desks are tiny, and after you put a laptop and a lamp there, there's precious little room for anything else. Plus, our rooms are tiny, which allows the stench of 95 generations of students and their accidents to accumulate in unfortunately high concentrations. Moreover, the room are dark, and having the table under a lofted bed makes it worse. Its surprising how important a good environment is to studying.

Anyways, about that one table. It's about the size of a good office desk, or rather three or four times the size of the desk in my room where I am now. It's faux wood and semi-collapsible, but its pretty heavy and a pretty high quality collapsible table-- much better than the tiny desks in our rooms. The legs are a bit odd and twisted (they remind me a bit of a writing desk), and the table surface is smooth and shiny and heavy.

I like to sit in an armchair and study there with all my papers spread out, and sometimes one or two other friends share the table with me. The parlor is not particularly well-lit, but then again, my room isn't either. Still, its quiet, peaceful and nice- perhaps the only part of the residence hall that is so. Downstairs, there is a study room but its not much better than my room, and there are always a number of international Chinese students loudly complaining about everything. It's a bit awkward to be eavesdropping on them, because they're convinced I'm Korean though I'm actually Chinese (Taiwanese).

Well, the table is no more. Today I walked into the parlor and the table was broken. The surface had been ripped off the legs somehow, exposing the two screw plates that had once held the table together. Seriously why the fuck would you do that? Now I have nowhere to study. Plus, everyone in the residence hall is probably going to have to help pay for the table. If I ever find the fucker who broke the table, I'm going to beat him with what's left of it and may God have mercy on his butthole.

You could take it up with your landlord, it is very possible that it says somewhere in your contract that you are supposed o have a furnished common room or such. Also, what Megaliskuu asked. Libraries are the best places to study

Go to the library or one of the many other buildings typically on a campus. I think I did all my best learning outside the dorms.

if you want to study live off campus // if you want to party or be surrounded by a good number of retards live on campus

thats really all there is to it TBH, residence is just a huge waste of money and health after the first semester. best solution is to just get out after you do your thing

Also its just a table, get over it O_O I'm sure there are much worse things happening that affects you in your residence lol (ie the smell for one)

hey there,
ofc i dont know what your campus is like,so i can only talk from my own experience
i also live in a dorm and most of the times its pretty loud here and i have big trouble concentrating. thats why i usually go to the huge library on our campus because there you have a perfect "study environment".

btw that part about puke made me giggle. there is nothing better on a monday morning then discovering that someone puked in the dorm hallway the night before and nobody cleaned it up.

Library is a really good suggestion, only problem I have at my university is that the library is always packed. Every goddamn desk/table/study space is taken from the early morning to dinner time.

There are always quiet study areas in the library or learning centers. I've seen schools with individual cubicles.

Ah student life. I've had a particular memorable evening at some point where the smell of smoke woke me up, I walked downstairs and found two former housemates plus two current housemates burning all our couches, a coffee table and all of our garbage about a meter and a half away from the appartment block. Couches gone, huge black burnmark on the side of the building stretching three floors up and all windows broken by heat. The next day was a particularly memorable one for them, being forced to pay for it all by the housing authority thing.

That said, there's usually plenty of websites where you can pick up second hand furniture locally for free, or for very little. It's the ultimate way in getting crappy furniture you don't care about. All it needs is some searching and bit of effort to go pick up.

If just the top of the table was taken off, obviously it's going to be used for beer pong. At my school we used to unscrew the closet doors from the hinges and put them across 2 bed to make a make shift beer pong table. That or maybe a skateboard ramp, college kids are pretty resourceful lol

I was an RA in a freshman hall for three years and things like this are unfortunately normal. The only fixtures that seemed to remain unphased from the years of abuse are the solid pool tables. Drunken idiots will ruin your day if you let them.

Fortunately, you can probably petition the hall council or residence life for some furniture. Almost every hall will have funds set aside for small improvements and a good study table is a great asset. If I were you I'd pursue this route.

Buy a bigger table for your room if you can fit it?
Study at the library?
Stop crying about a single desk?
Go get drunk and break a table it's actually funner than it sounds.

Good luck in your quest friend.

Sounds awful, I'm assuming the library isn't 24hr access?
