I have been playing since the release. I have played thousands of games (Generally 1v1) and I just want to have fun. I seem to have a problem with races though. I am great at all of them (Meaning Platinum level (Not great on the big scale)). I just want to choose a race and get great at them. The problem is though.. I get bored of the race I choose eventually and never really stick to a race. I love all of them. But dislike something about all of them. I have asked for countless amounts of advice with this topic, but don't ever seem to get anywhere. Everybody just says to pick the race I like to use the most. It isn't that simple, or I wouldn't be here. I just want to see what race I can stick with, and what I can do to continuously love them. Here is my background with all of them.
Protoss - I watched the Battle Reports on YouTube anticipating the release of SC2. I had never played BW except once with my cousins for a week on vacation and had never played RTS games. I new that RTS games were the hardest in the world and I wanted to be great at them. I watched these Beta videos and Battle Reports strictly anticipating Protoss. Loving the power of blink and the new sleek look to zealots. I never really got a kick out of anything else. Except the Mothership. I wanted to be great with that thing. The it got severely nerfed and I ignored it. I play with them for about a month and realized I wasn't good with them. (Kind of like when somebody plays Call Of Duty and expects to be naturally good with one of the guns). I didn't feel like I was going to get anywhere with Protoss. I loved things about them. But didn't like the feel of them. Just there looks.
Terran - I switched to them next. My little brother was anticipating Terran. I watched the reapers and I loved the concept of them. I wanted to use them but I was a Protoss. When I switched to Terran I tried reapers but I didn't like them that much. I didn't like the looks of them and I felt the worse using them. Queuing units up was blah and boring and I didn't like the monotonous defending and harassing. I am a very tactical person in real life. I wanted to be humans because I thought tactical things about the race was fun. But I never got a real love for them. Even though I wish I did. Along with all of the other races.
Zerg - This race, I felt the best with. I felt like I could naturally play with them with ease. But I hated the looks of them. I didn't like the bottom feeder race, personally. But I got promoted to Gold easily and this was a big deal for me. I thought I would stick with them, but they weren't fun to look at. Even though I was good with them. I never enjoyed it.
Summary: I love protoss looks. But get bored with them because I don't like there mechanics style. I wish I loved them a lot. Terran I am just flat out bad with. And I don't like there looks that much. I just wished I enjoyed there tactical mechanics more. I am good with Zerg mechanics. I am better with there mechanics more than any other race. But I don't like playing with them.
Warning: I never switch races because I am losing. I switch because I get bored. I usually switch when I am on winning streaks.

Please Community. I trust the StarCraft 2 loving judgement and hope some of you few will really give me some insight on what I need to do. I want to be Grandmaster. I want to be in tournaments. And I want to enjoy this game. I don't feel like I am getting the most fulfillment I can from this. |

I'll tell you right now bro, plat is not even close to impressive. If you can't enjoy fully any one race than maybe Sc2 just isn't your game. Also, being GM and playing in tournaments is hardly even plausible, at your current level I mean. Best to forget all about that right now, lest you become more and more disappointed.
I mean in all reality, you should probably focus on playing whatever race you enjoy the mechanics of the most. Any player can be good with any race. You just have to develop a style around their limitations.Last edit: 2012-04-23 10:33:40 |

Maybe play random? You'll never know what you get, and you won't get bored by playing the same race over and over and over again.
I don't know what else, sorry D: StarCraft might not be the game for you. Maybe try just spectating, not playing? Last edit: 2012-04-23 10:32:51 |

| If you want to be good with a race that you like (Sounds like you like to play Terran...) then practice with them and get better. Don't just say you're bad with them and give up. |

warp prism. this unit eliminates every staleness of protoss. 3 zealots in mineral line every 5 minutes of game. Stressful for us terrans!
also, if your under masters league you can win with any build. As long as you have good enough macro. So don't worry about the streamline builds, put your own spin. (example: go mech vs toss with terran, throw in ravens.....do immortal drops against zerg..... any unit YOU like, make builds for it.)Last edit: 2012-04-23 10:51:11 |

I.. don't understand why you're doing this if you've already asked for advice before and your arguments for liking/disliking a race involve "looks." I'm actually a bit disappointed as a human being by reading how much you care about the way the races look. And no, I'm not going to make some superficial reference to racism or anything. I just don't understand how you even have TIME to care about what a race looks like while playing SC2.
Quite frankly, if you're spending the time noticing how things look (in any competitive game), you're probably not playing at a very high level. And if you refuse to play Zerg because they're just like super icky eww gross, you've got other issues to work out. Maybe try Hello Kitty Princess Adventure Party?
Sounds like you don't like any of the races but are better with Zerg.
Play Zerg.
If you get bored and want to try other races, just play random.
The end. |

| Do you watch streams or events? You can play a race that's the same as your favorite player. The more you watch, the more motivated you can be to play that certain race more than others. |

| Haha well I just want to know how to stick to a race. I guess the key is to find fu strategies? But I can't find any. Especially with Terran. It seems like I HAVE to do marine tank or straight mech. Which seems a bit subjective on its own. |

You don't "have" to do marine/tank or straight mech for a long, long time (in terms of the skills of you/your opponents)
Maybe you can pick fun strategies and if you ever face the point where you want to be super-competitive, you won't mind certain aspects of a race/ will be more motivated by winning than anything else? |

How about this: I just played a TvZ last night where I didn't build a single refinery. Pure marine, no upgrades. I beat a Platinum Zerg and I'm no higher than Platinum/Diamond myself. It was fun and challenging.
I still don't understand though. Are you asking us to teach you how to have fun and try new things? |

| Well if you are bored with the 3 races, just try random, but you aren't gonna improve very fast I suspect. |

| I agree with you on the "I like the playstyle of one race, but like the looks of the other." In the end I usually choose the race that looks better. I know...a little shallow, but the aesthetics ends up being more important for me than the playstyle. |

z0rz, what I am thinking is that I just can't commit to one race. Although protoss balls are boring to control. And Terran seems just boring. I would want to be good at them. But they are boring. And zerg I am good with mechanics and like spamming things out. But that race also feels very limited. It seems like ling muta or roach infestor. Late game infestor, brood lord.

I think you need to watch streams more. Looks of a race are kinda silly if you're playing for competition...choose off of feel. If you feel limited with Terran in particular you probably need to do a little more investigation into the versatility of the race itself. Terran has a ton of options and it isn't simple a matter of choosing between one or two strategies. Terran is about the build up to a certain composition that you want...there are myriad possibilities leading up to each late game army. That is what Terran is about. If you don't like that, it's not the race you should play.
Just play what fits you the best. Unless you have some phobia that inhibits your ability to play Zerg, it sounds like that's the race you should focus on. |
