I get super nervous when ever I play online.

When I play I get incredibly nervous. And it's not like I should be either as my matches are about as inconsequential as SC2 matches can get. But it doesn't change how nervous I get.

My heart flutters whenever something happens that I don't feel secure about... and as a zerg player that usually amounts to the whole first 10 minutes of any game.

I don't play with a specific build order in mind. I usually just try to go ling/bane/infestor... I try using day9's advice with building groupings. I usually go pool/extracter/evochamber and then I go for expand+double extractor and my final grouping is another expo/extractors then either infestor or spire depending on my mood.

But the inner monologue that goes on in my head is off the wall. It's usually me noticing a mistake and then dwelling on it. "DUDE IT'S ALMOST SEVEN MINUTES IN AND YOU HAVEN'T EXPANDED... YOU RETARD." Or "OMG OMG OMG CLOAKED BANSHEE OMG OMG WHAOMG"

I then try to focus on the problem but when I do my macro slips hardcore. I'll miss injects, stop my creep spread, throw everything at them and basically start from scratch.

If I'm pushing into their base with an army and I hear the 'your drones are underattack' my heart literally skips a beat.

When I actually win a match I shake. Have you ever been in a car crash before? You know that feeling you have the instant it's over? That's how I feel when ever I win.

Also, when I lose convincingly, it's almost as if I can feel the stress leaving my body. Like if they come at me with a force of marines and medivacs before I even have my 3rd expansion up all the tension slowly deflates.

Then I watch a replay and I feel like a complete tool. I think I'm scared of the ladder... I've done two of my five placement matches so far. I sit here and I look at the matchmaking screen and I'm kind of scared to click find game... I get too invested in this game.

Are there any tips you have for me?
Cynicism isn't wisdom; it's a lazy way to say that you've been burned. Seems if anything you'd be less certain after everything you ever learned.

Ignore the trolls, play more games and you shouldn't get nervous anymore!
I feel you, I am also nervous time to time, specially if now when I just got promoted. I don't want to mess up.
You could also ask yourself how much does your rank really means for you? If it's not in your top 5 list of important things of your life, then you could afford some losses.

Good luck and have fun. You learn by the mistakes.

Playing a lot or just surrendering instantly a couple of games works for me.

It may sound weird but if you play more you lose that anxiety just mass games and you'll be cured.... for me i had the same problem until i got the hang of whats going on in the game... i got used to scouting and wasn't surprised with anything coming my way... truly if you play more and improve u wont get anxious as much anymore

I have to try that "surrender instantly" thing, I have read of it before. I am almost as bad as the OP, I refuse to play for weeks at a time because the stress is too much.

I believe this happens to most, if not everyone on their first rts game they 1v1. It goes away once you get used to it . Just play a lot and it'll go away fast :D
When I think of something else, something will go here

Yes,

i used to have that nerves too, but i learned to play not to win but to learn. If u start to care a lot about the points you going to lose if you fail then you get mad and nervous when you play.

So....stay relaxed, smile when something goes wrong, streach your fingers after a match, go drink some water, put a nice music in the back, and try again....lose and lose so much that you'll not care anymore.

that's how i overcame this situation. I hope u get over this ! By the way, i used to get some piece of chocolat when i lose, so i conditioned my brain that losing is good lol

true story !

If you are that scared to play, enter 20 games and leave on start, you shouldnt be scared of losing anymore, because ladder is for practice and fun. Being silver or plat is same thing, you arent going pro, no one will judge you if you lose.

Hi there! My first piece of advice would be to look through these: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/search.php?q=ladder+anxiety

The topic may have come up a time or two in the last 2 years. >_>

Secondly, my usual advice is "to play more". When it gets downgraded from "scary event" to "event that you've done a hundred times already", emotions tend to level out.
Show me a completely smooth operation and I'll show you a cover up. Real boats rock.

well don't sweat it too much. i mean none of us are ever going to go pro, we play the game so we can enjoy it and be a part of this amazing scene if you're not going to play for money, there's no reason to be nervous. so just play your best and have fun, think of it as a hobby. if you don't feel good playing the game then find something else that makes you feel good, that's what i did, i was getting beat down by starcraft so i took a 2 months hiatus, and when i came back i saw the game with whole new eyes. Pioneered so many ways to degrade a human being that it can't be changed to this day. Legacy so ingrained in the way that we think we no longer need chains to be slaves.

You just have to play (lose) more. I've felt that way before, just have to play anyway or the anxiety doesn't go away... it's okay to make mistakes, because your opponent is making mistakes too. If you get jittery, just slow down, maybe ask for a pause, and take some deep breaths.

I'm not sure if playing more is always the best advice, I mean there are still these times where games are a little more important than usual.

This might help ;-)

(Wiki)Dealing with anxiety
- One does not simply walk into a bar and start calling the shots.
- Failure doesn't mean you are a failure it just means you haven't succeeded yet.

1. Click 'Find Match'.
2. Press F10.
3. Press 'N'.
4. Repeat 20 times.

Eventually you will learn not to be concerned about losing and ladder rank and just play.

Yes, the same thing happened to me. However, it was sort of an accident. I didn't leave a bunch of matches in a row, I just lost a bunch of matches in a row. Same effect really though, I didn't really care about rank anymore.
Done with Team Liquid for a while. Don't expect to find me here.

I've never tried leaving games, don't think I could. I still have ladder anxiety, just not as bad as it used to be and it's slowly getting more manageable. I just make myself play a lot more and I make sure to almost always (hey, no-one is perfect!) greet my opponent at the start of the game and say "gg" at the end. It helps. I also try to not focus on winning (and this is tough) but just doing things that I know are good to do, like making probes non-stop in one game, not getting supply-blocked in another and not worry if I win or lose as long as I did those things. I find I feel a lot better about playing doing all the above.

Finally, I have the good luck of having a couple of my best mates play SC. If they are also on-line we usually team-up and have fun. Sure, it's not the same as 1v1 and your skill won't improve etc but it's great chatting on skype with good mates (sometimes raging at each other, lol) and playing SC2. It's a nice break from 1v1 and makes you enjoy the game a lot more.

If you have some friends also into SC2, then you might want to try doing the same.

that's one thing I don't have and that's people IRL to play with... I'm kind of restricted to the ladder.

I just played my 3rd placement game and I got smoked so hard. http://drop.sc/166124

I went into it after making the OP and reading a couple of replies. I didn't feel nervous at all... I even encountered some cheese and I just rolled with it... granted I got rolled but it was fun.
