I recently found out about the double dactyl, a form of silly poetry that seemed like a fun challenge to write. The rules are 1) the first line is "repetitive nonsense" 2)The subject is in the next line 3)At least one line must be only one word, all this within 4) a rigid, dactyl-based metrical pattern.
I decided to try to write one for each GSL champion. Obviously I had to fudge a lot, but I hope my obvious dodges are entertaining. I'll probably update as I think of better double-dactyl words, as that is usually the sticking point.
Higgeldy piggely GomTV GSL First of the StarLeagues for StarCraftu Two
Here are the champions, whom I’ve painstakingly, doubledadactically laid out for you.
Firstity worstity oGsFruitdealer, won the first Open when ultras were good.
Now he is coaching a game that is seen as, not unhypocritically, “gamer junk food.”
Zergily wergily NesTea from Miracles once was a champion very adored.
Now, though he's struggling, I keep on hoping quite unrealistically he'll win once more.
Tossity shmossity MC the President, First 'toss to dominate Brood War’s young son.
Sentries and stalkers, they quadportatastically busted up ramps and made enemies run.
Tankity spankity Mvp, Game Genie, Finally won for the imbalanced race
I don’t like watching him. Though he’s amazing, he neanderthalically won’t shut his face.
Supero dupero Polt’s still the singular player from Prime who has won GSL
sometimes considered the boringest tournament: ultrarepetitive TvT hell.
Finally whinally Slayersu MMA, acronym underdog to MVP
Though people forecasted terrible trouncing, it counterhistorically, brought us much glee.
HoSeo Shmosheo Jjakji the Leenock-bane finally gave us a finals to cheer.
Battling youngins would play out a series that uncustomarily closed out the year.
Kongity? Wrongity. MVP DRG managed to win after plenty of loss.
When he had finished his seven-game match he was incontrovertibly the new Zerg boss.Last edit: 2012-05-03 00:07:42

This is difficult. If nothing else it seems an exercise in employing awkward adverbs. Hats off to you, a much better job than I.

That is the definitely the hardest part :-p. I tried no to use purely adverbs, but it was hard to pass up a free pair of unstressed syllables. |

Was too tempting to pass off 'nonchalant repartee' for pure nonsense. A good exercise though, as most of us should try and limit our use of adverbs in writing.
+ it's strangely addictive. Last edit: 2012-05-03 01:31:42 |

It has something to do with the rhythmic structure. My friend is an English major and he said he thought the poetry would help him more with the ladies. Now hes broke and womenless.... |

| It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of an English major, must be in want of a wife. |

Thanks :-) . A dactyl is pretty much just a series of syllables that follows the pattern of stressed-unstressed-unstressed. A word that is a dactyl, for instance, is 'mockingbird.' You'll notice that you pronounce it MOCKingbird and not mockINGbird or mockingBIRD. So when you put a bunch of dactyls is turns into something of a waltz: "ONE twothree ONE twothree ONE twothree," which is why these are so catchy to write and speak aloud. |
