Preface: This post is mostly to gauge the interest level of people who may end up viewing the product of this idea and to see what the community would prefer more (as in critiquing my thoughts and helping me create a series which people will end up watch.) This is, in summary, an idea to do live-casts of old BW games.
So, due to my schedule becoming much more open during the summer (being in between fall and spring semesters,) I came up with an idea to keep myself busy during the summer: real-time live casting of professional BW matches. I have always wanted to contribute to this community, but never was able to bring much of value to the table.
- I do not speak Korean (for the purpose of translating articles.) - I don't have capital to invest into the community (such as providing prize money for tournaments or other kinds of funding.) - I am not an exceptional player, and my strategic knowledge is limited (almost all of my BW success and wins have been attributed to good mechanics, and I have never understood the game quite as well as many people of the same rank as me.) - I am not a known figure in the community (it's much more difficult to get people to give a shit about your project or idea when nobody knows who you are.)
However, there is one very important thing that I do have going for me:
- I have an extensive knowledge of the BW Korean and foreign scenes, extending back to when I became interested in competitive gaming around 2005.
I have done a lot of thinking about how I could format this bit of knowledge into something that I would be proud to contribute to the community, and have come to one main idea: historical-style real-time analysis of professional BW matches.
There are a lot of people who have migrated to the starcraft community during the release of SC2, and a schism within the community has developed simultaneously. On one hand, we have a fresh set of people which may be unaware of the magic of broodwar and why starcraft is so popular in the first place (the beauty and difficulty of BW producing amazing moments.) On the other hand, we have a group of old-schoolers who are clinging to an (unfortunately) fading away game. Yes, it still is played to a high competitive level, but it's difficult to argue that the "sky is the limit" mentality of success in BW has passed, as a large amount of the funding has moved to SC2.
As of now, I still don't know how exactly I want to make this happen; I have narrowed it down to two distinct paths:
- Historical/educational style, such that I would break down the strategies being used and explain how they have developed over time, who the key players within metagame shifts are, and general background for the era in which each game is played. OR - Real-time "blind" casts in which I would place myself as an actor within the timeframe of the game being played, and not actually acting like I know the outcome of the games. I would essentially be performing in a "time-capsule"-esque manner in which I would discuss current events of the era and cast in actual real time.
I would like anyone who might be interested in this project to feel free to give me their thoughts/critiques regarding this concept. I want to know whether or not this is something worth pursuing, and if so, what would be the most effective (crowd-pleasing) way to go about doing it.

I would be interested in listening to some historical/educational BW casts. If you could compare the older styles of play with modern BW or provide context to why these games were/are significant, I would definitely tune in to watch this.

I'd like this too.
Yep, this would be cool. Having only come to the BW scene around '09 I'd like to learn more about noteworthy earlier games and playstyle development. Perhaps you could work your way through a particular series or tournament to build a sense of the moment and connection to the players. An interesting time period would be Savior's rise to power; show how zergs were being owned and how Savior countered that and introduced new strategies.

I would like to requst "BW Gossip" or "Did you know that..." videos where you talk about various things that only somehow who's been following the scene for as long as you have would know. I know it's not part of your 2 paths you wish to take, but it's something I would like to see.

This is great! I'd love to learn more about how things came and went in older BW, players, dominance, ballance, strategies, teams etc. How about one aspect is you pick out games that are iconic or significant. Not those ones that we've all seen, but ones that are classic because they show a major change in the general style (and maybe also summ up the new strategy nicely), especially in response to certain strategies that had become standard. Equivalents to Sea always going Bio into Mech-Switch on Grand Line. Or Fantasy doing a pictire-puuurrrrrfect Fantasy build versus a 3 Hatch. Except..... I already know those strategies and how they changed things, show me some that really mattered that I don't know, but the ~metagame~ wouldn't look the same without.
Maybe another section on notable map types as they came and went, such as semi-island maps because of mineral walls compared to semi-island maps because of lots of neutral buildings, and maybe a little tibbit on what made their ballance the way it was etc (+video demonstration).
THIS IS EXCITINGUUUUUUUUU, I'm just too young, and had access to internets/TL too late in my life to have this old-boy knowledge, but I still have the sentiment....
