When a game becomes a chore, I say stopping is the best option. This is why I play 1v1 in Sc2 so little as well, it's extremely frustrating and really doesn't give much back. Yeah, I'm better at it than a lot of people I know, yay. While they were doing something they really enjoyed, I spent half my time happy over a win, half my time angry over a loss. Which is, in the end, not worth my time.
I will still play SC2 and ladder, especially when Hots arrive. But personally, I think it's a personality trait, some people do not like competitive games where you lose as much, if not more, than you win, so it makes me sad to see so many dumbfucks in this thread who somehow feel they have to insult the OP just to defend themselves playing without getting better and being frustrated. |

Good luck dude - if you don't enjoy something that is ostensibly a game, you should definitely be going elsewhere for your kicks.
Also, TL has its fair share of elitists, sure, but I prefer to think that they're a vocal minority - most people in the community just want others to get involved and have fun. If you ever come back to SC2 and want to have some no-pressure Gold/Platinum level games (on the EU server) PM me.

You don't need to play the game, to love it and enjoy its community and what this scene has to offer. To sweep TL under the bed because of how much you dislike the game and call it elitism is just cheap and avoiding self-blame. I haven't played SC2 in a long time, but I still can't see the game's qualities and the people that make it worth sticking around.
That's crap. Starcraft 2 is a very frustrating game. It's more frustrating to me than getting a bad grade. For me, I think it is because it's extremely hard to profit from all your hard work. I fucking hate losing, in everything. Yes you get better, but in the end you will still lose 50 percent of your games because of the ranking system. I got to high masters in this game and I kept trying to get into GM. Eventually I was like, what's the point? When I get into GM I will still lose 50 percent of my games. The only way to get ahead of the curve is by being pro. Then finally you are going to win more than 50 percent of your games. But because this game is so hard and there is such a competitive community you need to play 8+ hours a day to reach that. You invest all this time to get better. You put up with all the bullshit(all ins/cheeses) and at the end of the day. You still lose 50 percent of your games. I don't improve because I enjoy the process of improving, I definitely enjoy improving but my main goal for improving is to WIN. In every game I played seriously I eventually got to a level where I would win atleast 75 percent of my games. Ranking system or not. But being in the top 0.1 percent of Europe in this game just means there are atleast a couple of thousand people just as good as you who play just as seriously and just as regularly as you. I would play the same people over and over. You finally get ahead of these people, to be paired against even better people and you will still lose 50 percent of the time! The ranking system is just too good. Combine that with the fact that there is no way to casually play this game. Every game you are on edge and your brain is running overtime. It gets frustrating and drains you. I just hate losing too much, the psychological blow it delivers to me is much worse than the excitement of a win.
You're reacting emotionally to individual losses/wins more than your general ladder ranking and improvement in gameplay, which must be mentally exhausting. This is perhaps a common attitude, but I dislike it. If you just want to win each individual game, why not play custom and crush noobs? If you argue that there's no challenge in that, I agree, but then, with challenge, comes a chance of failure. Even a lot of pros have barely more than 50% win rates - in their tournaments careers many have <50%. Ever watch how those pros - those with the required winning attitudes - react when they win/lose ordinary ladder games? For most, they don't frown at a loss, or smile at a win (Idra excepted). I can understand someone's frustration if he never improves at all, or frustration due to perceived race imba, but frustration because every game is evenly matched? Immature, I think. |

I think people are really looking at the game differently than what it should be. It's meant to be a challenging game. People keep seeing it as something to improve on as if it'll play a key role in your life when the challenge is meant to be the entertainment. There's too much emphasis on points of improvement, going higher, being where you think you should be because those goals are never met with full confidence, it leads to a lot of negative feelings and issues. I'm not saying I didn't get angry at the game, I have a laptop that says otherwise, but I can say that the game has its merits and the game is taken too seriously but a lot of people (it draws itself like that and Blizzard messed in a few key ways by making 1v1 feel so alone and by yourself).
But Torte, I'm going to become sooper good and become a sooper star pro player!!!! Who cares if most pro players are poorly paid and live in cramped over-crowded team houses. A few of them are sooper popular and kewl so I want to be one too! Then when I fall short of my rediculous and pointless aspirations I'll make a blog on TL about how I quite and I'll blame TL for being too elitist!!! |

People play the game to improve within themselves, learn about themselves and feel reward when they feel improvement. If your sole goal is to just have a % then I feel very sorry for you, you live a very shallow life |

Yea this is why I quit SC too.
I win most ladder games when playing BW. I don't mind losing to friends in friendlies but I hated losing ladder. So I always deleted my stats the moment I lost 5 games in a row or was below 75% win at a certain rank. SC regardless of BW or SC2 is a very stressful game. Losing is not enjoyable and you lose a lot in this game. After years of gaming and finding only stress in the end, I decided to quit too and it was a good decision.
This game is funny because I play games to relieve stress, and when you are on a winning streak, you feel very good. But the moment you lose to a noob because you had a micro error, or your goon got stuck on terrain, or your mouse suddenly doesn't work, or you just slacked and lost focus, you will get pissed nonetheless. It is likely that you end the SC session of the day with a loss, and that leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Good luck hets, maybe find a less stressful game that you can enjoy or enjoy real life hobbies! You can ALWAYS continue watching streams and pro games, i find them much more enjoyable now than actually playing. |

I can absolutely understand the OP. I also played SC (BW and SC2) a lot during the last four years. But about two months ago, after a final long ladder session I quit, too. Firstly, I hadn't realized that I'd quit, I just didn't play the game for a few days. And the days have become weeks now. Yesterday I tried playing a ladder game, but I left it after 5 minutes, because I just didn't want to do the stuff you have to do, when you're trying to win - so I typed "gg" and hit alt + f4. I still enjoy watching SC2 from time to time, and I will definitely come back for HotS.
I still love watching the game, I just can't play it without getting annoyed. (and it's NOT due to some so-called "imbalances", I'm just bored of doing the same stuff over and over again, especially the first minutes of a game bore the hell out of me, which leads to unexplainable mistakes and more annoyance.) |

Exactly what I was thinking.
TL isn't as bad as some communities out there; but it's still somewhat elitist. By nature, having a community like this means having people who are dedicated to the game.
You do have to have a thick skin to last in communities like this; some people just aren't cut out for it. But really, I do think the people giving this guy a hard time should be ashamed of themselves.Last edit: 2012-06-05 01:24:43 |

This is obviously a rediculous and ignorant statement, but anyway. My rate of improvement in anything I set my mind to is always high, and I enjoy improving. However, the enjoyment of improving for me just doesn't weigh up to the hatred for losing. When I lose, I blame myself so much. It's where my eagerness to improve comes from, but it also causes a lot of stress which I can't deal with. Last edit: 2012-06-05 02:07:59 |

Honestly, the number of times i've stopped playing sc2 because of absolute dickheads like some of the replies in this thread...
It's like, BW was so much fun because of the community, i could just play for fun, have some practise games with my practise partners and it's all good
But now it's like, no, you have to grind ladder, and people are left and right insulting each other all day, "cheese" is completely unacceptable and bad mannered (apparently) The community has totally gone to shit and it is only demonstrated by some of the posts in this thread
In BW you could be D+ and still enjoy playing the game and having fun. But in SC2, it's nonono GM or scrub. |

This is why I think SC2 is a game capable of giving you good life lessons. As lame and bizarre as it sounds, the more emotionally charged stories about people's SC2 careers I read, the more I believe that SC2 can carve out an image of how your mentality towards life look like.
@OP The 1v1 system is designed to give you a hard time. In order to get up the ladder you always need to discipline yourself constantly after each loss and not fall into the trap of venting out your frustrations out on anything else but yourself, otherwise you're simply just putting a handicap on your progress. I like to compare that to other things that are more important than games, like your education or your job. Instead saying "oh my boss is a douche" work your way around it and find out what causes your boss to shit on you and avoid it. Because depending on that job, you might want to hold on to it.
I really hate to say it, because I was guilty of it too. Getting utterly frustrated at your losses consistently is a sign of how immature you are. Sure you may love the game to death, but you should still be able to outline what your priorities are, and based on that you'll realize that SC2 is on the lower end of things. If you placed it higher and you're not living off SC2, then you've made an immature decision to do so. When you really have a grasp around that concept you'll find losing in SC2 not very aggravating at all. I mean okay, we're all different in our own ways, so maybe some of you guys will bury your heads in your keyboards after an excruciating loss, but for the most part you'll be more like "Damn, I messed up, lawl oh well onto the next game."
I used to be that ridiculous cocksucking rager, I even tried to defend and justify my rage. I didn't BM my opponent but fuck I would go apeshit. Eventually it came to the point where I asked myself, why the fuck am I playing a game that does nothing but make me rage and spill wine over my fully autographed MLG mousepad? The answer was because I enjoyed watching myself improve and win games that I wouldn't have won before. So now I needed to ask, how do I get there? The answer then was to figure out what my mistakes were, correct them, and execute my corrections as I laddered. Rage wasn't included in any of that. Then guess what, I stopped getting mad at my losses and just analyzed them for my mistakes. Of course I'm no where near Recognizable's caliber, but I'm sure I have a lot more fun with my hobby and have less negativity in my games- which is more win in my book.
As for the TL being an elitist community, I think that many of us are just misunderstood. I had a lot of issues with blogging on TL and couldn't understand the negativity behind some replies. It's not elitism, its just people who disagree in a really blunt way. Plus you need to factor in the fact that people may not read your entire post or even comprehend the way you meant your post to be. So when you see comments that just come off as harsh and unhelpful, just ignore it. It's not worth the trouble, and chances are they might be just trying to rile you up, so be the better man and not reply. And if you really feel bothered by it, PM them, you'll be surprised at the responses you'll get.Last edit: 2012-06-05 04:48:49 |
