If you haven't been to a live MLG event, let me describe the important details for you. Generally the player area is surrounded by a mob of spectators, so you would be lucky to see what is going on beyond the first first row of computers that are immediately adjacent to the border of the player area.
There is also an elevated platform with enough room for 2 matches at a time which is held away from the main player area. This is the side stage, where some open bracket matches are highlighted and lots of people gather around after being frustrated by their inability to crowd into a good viewing angle for some of the matches in the regular player area. Eventually this too becomes too crowded to see much in.
Well this is all quite bad for amateur teams to get their name out there, since so few open bracket matches can get a good audience, and yet there are actually quite a number of good up and coming but relatively unknown players who participate. You might have heard about a Suppy or an Eifer, or in the WCS about Kitty or Daisuki.
But how to get be able to watch their games more, and those of others like snixsnipe who gave a good showing but who do not appear to be any more visible than they were before the event.
The easiest thing to do, which I didn't notice at providence, perhaps it was in place at Anaheim, but I wasn't there, is to make sure games involving a known player and a lesser known but very good player are played on those computers which are at the edges. Often I would only see 1 maybe 2 games at a time of interest at stations which were easily viewable. We can do better. This would require no infrastructure changes, just a person who is very familiar with the north American amateur scene (hint hint ^^).
So, better player placement is one easily implementable option. Of course we would also have to show pro vs pro open bracket games, but I'm sure there is a way to work all that out.
As far as adding infrastructure goes, I think even just one more side station would be sufficient for most cases. It doesn't even need to be as big and flashy as the current side station. Even something like a table with larger monitors above it would be sufficient, in some area of the player area's border where the tables are normally perpendicular to the border, so it is rather impossible to see much of the players' monitors. In fact we could do this using the existing table setup in the player area. This would increase the viewable area quite a lot while only requiring a few extra monitors as far as additional infrastructure goes.
Any other ideas for improving the view ability of the open bracket? The specific emphasis I have been focusing on is better visibility for amateurs and their teams, with additional emphasis on those changes which would require the least additional infrastructure.
Edit- also, less depth more length in terms of the setup of the player area would seem like a good thing, if there is room on the ground to set it up like that.Last edit: 2012-06-16 05:06:19

| P.s. does anyone have a pic that shows an overview of the entire player area? So we can all see its setup in relation to the stuff around it? |

Nice write up! There really does need to be more coverage of those up and coming players/teams. I wouldn't mind seeing MLG get a second station like (1-2) Or even having tvs/monitors to view some of the games in the middle area of the open bracket.
Overall I think MLG needs to spend more time promoting those up and coming players/teams. (maybe hire me to cast the open bracket ) Just like you i'm one of the few people that is very knowledgable about the lesser known teams since I cast them week in and week out in multiple team leagues. I think it is important to get casters that are knowledgable about the pro scene but you also need casters who are knowledgable about both scense IMOLast edit: 2012-06-16 05:10:07 |

yea man, I personally would love to do it since I happen to live 20 minutes away from the next mlg championship event, in that city. Wouldnt even need to pay for my travel cause I'd be there anyways haha. |

I saw Nony post this in another thread and felt like it goes with this subject.

Make part of the player lounge go backstage? I think backstage at most venues is pretty spacious. If that's not possible, maybe start the floor plan from scratch. I'm sure a ton of thought and refinement has gone into the current floor plan but the event has evolved and there are new things being demanded of the floor plan.
I'd like there to be a bunch of 40in+ monitors surrounding the player pit showing matches (can be first person views of players). For example, stations 1-5 could have the best matches of the round with 10 corresponding monitors. Fans shouldn't have to strain to see a player's monitor. Players shouldn't be crowded by fans (this hasn't been a major issue for players afaik, fans are respectful, but it's a matter of atmosphere).
Stations 1 and 2, which are on a mini-stage with big monitors hanging above the players, allowing a crowd to watch more easily, are just copies of stations done for Halo. I don't think they are good for SC2 because playing SC2 is much more sensitive than playing Halo so whenever a ref or a player at the other station is walking on the stage, it's disruptive. Fans crowd the area and again that hasn't been a huge issue but it's a matter of atmosphere. Players should feel like they have a nice barrier and I think that's possible without causing fans to feel like they're too remote. I think because of the nature of the game, this wasn't an issue for Halo but it's a bit different for SC2. I think monitors around the player pit could serve the purpose of the mini-stage better.
I think the player pit should have an area designated for fan interaction. If a player just won a match that was on the monitors, he ought to be able to go mingle with the fans. I would hope it'd become a thing. Fans would know that the player is there specifically for them so the fans who do not want to be a disturbance to players can comfortably approach. When the player wants to leave for rest or the next match, it'd be natural to say bye and walk back into the player pit (as opposed to walking through the venue's open floor and having to decline 10 fans in a 50 foot walk).
Extra chairs in the player pit would be nice but definitely a luxury. There should be plenty of seating in the player lounge.
