Anyone got some eyedrops?

At MLG Anaheim last weekend, I had a chance to try out Heart of the Swarm at the demo stations. I played each race once just to get a feel of all the new units, upgrades, etc. So, to describe all the new Heart of the Swarm stuff in typical Team Liquid article fashion, I'll be ranking the changes that I felt were the most interesting, coolest, or perhaps game-breaking. These are basically just the new features that I'm most excited (or afraid) to see in the expansion. Keep in mind numbers for all the units can always change, so I'll try to comment mostly on the concepts of the units and changes. I'll assume all of you have, to some extent, read about what the new units and upgrades do. Just for reference, I'm a High-Masters Terran player on the NA server. Here we go!

definitely like this format for the hots contest. hope you win!
EDIT: Redline reactor doesn't cost energy, it just has a cooldown
EDIT2: don't like warhounds, they seem like a marauder built out of the factory. and widow mines seem broken as they can 1shot observers and overlords and banshees, etc. good idea but i dunno if 1shotting obs and ovies are ok :U

Thanks!

I'm 100% sure Redline Reactor costed energy when I played it at Anaheim, cause I was playing with my friend and he kept Feedbacking my BCs when I tried to see what it looked like.

Since your post is well written enough that it might be a contender for the HotS Contest I want to go on record and say I think your reasoning is really off in many cases and I don't think it's good feedback.

Some examples are thinking zerg has good pressure options, thinking some units will be useless for random reasons, predicting balance changes by Blizzard without telling why you think so. It's mostly that with every original argument you made I felt like the reasoning was off.

I didn't say Zerg has good pressure options (even though it's possible to get aggressive with Roach/Bane ZvT or Stephano Roaches ZvP for example), I said it'd be weird for Zerg to try and pressure given the current metagame where playing defensively and getting a Hive-tech army is much more effective. Zerg isn't the race that needs to pressure, other races generally need to pressure Zerg. Swarm Host might change this, but not unless Zerg late game is nerfed somewhat imo, which I stated.

Not sure where I thought units would be useless for random reasons, as far as I can see I stated all my reasons. An example of where I did this would be nice.

I dont think anybody who is actuly good at the game will leave Widow Mines on autocast. They have a large range and sight radius and you can manually target each one. When you are doing enough damage to oneshot any queen/swarmhost/viper that moves within ~5-6 range of your easily mass produced 75/25 mine it seems logical to manually target the ones you do make.

Actually didn't know that because I didn't spend too much time messing with the Widow Mines. I'll make some edits.

I really like this layout for the contest. Easy to read.

however, i disagree with your reasoning as to why the Tempest is bad (which it isn't actually.). The tempest has the same dps as a stimmed marine. You know what else has the dps of a stimmed marine? The Guardian, which is in every way worse than a Tempest. The tempest has longer range, can attack air as well as ground, and it moves faster. The guardian is not a useless unit, it is useful and powerful in its own right, despite its cost. In fact, i'm going to say that unless the tempest's dmage is lowered even further, it will be overpowered.

as an example, say a protoss has 5 tempests, 3 colossi, 6 HT, lots of zealots and archons outside your base. He is slowly sniping units and structures, in a safe position of his choosing. Do you attack into that? With 22 range, the protoss has the power to decide the location of the battle, and force unfavourable engagements, and to slowly whittle away the opponents patience. These things are alot more powerful than any hard coded ability or amount of damage.

other than that, i agree with the rest of your summaries, i think

Valid points. I do agree that it could be useful to whittle down enemy units or force a bad engagement from the other player, but I guess my main point is that I feel like such an expensive unit should be a front-line battle unit rather than a strategic unit. If they snipe your Observer with a Scan or Fungal or something and you can't attack from 22 range away, the Tempest is a lot less useful in a fight than something like the Carrier.

But you're right, it does have its uses. I guess I would just prefer a less exaggerated version that doesn't cost so much resources and tech if it's going to be a positioning-based strategic unit rather than an end-game combat ship.

Very thoughtful post.

Your comments on mothership core gave me an interesting idea. What if having the core attached sacrificed your ability to use chrono on that nexus. That would potentially make it less of a foregone conclusion to immediately get it every game, which it seems like it is now.

well, if the tempest isn't supposed to be Protoss' end-game combat ship.... maybe the carrier will? O_o
