I used to have a really close friend that I met in school. He's Korean, and I met him 2 years ago. I still remember how awkward our first conversations were (Them Koreans). We would talk a bit about what was going in school, talk about our fascist teachers, our classmates, and whatever else. He always required some prompting as he was limited in his expressions due to the language barrier. Sure, he spoke English, but not well enough to express himself as well and as clear as he could in Korean.

He was the only person in school that played StarCraft. I fondly recall the time when StarCraft first came up.

"So uh, do you play StarCraft?"
"Star crapft?"
"Yup"
"You play?" *chuckles*
"Yup, do you play 1 or 2?"
"I play Star 1"
"How good are you?"
"Huh?"
"Like, ICCup?"
"Oh, C+ Jerg"
"That's pretty good man!"
"Haha, in Korea I play with friends at PC Bang after school. Split 2 team *Sticks out 2 fingers to gesture 2*, I beat all my friends."
"Haha, you bonjwa?"

We both ended up laughing hysterically, and the class looked at us like we were psychopaths. I introduced him to SC2 not long after. The first game we played is still etched in my head. He chose Protoss and opened up with a Forge Fast Expand. Being the foreigner that I am, I opened with a 7 Roach Rush. Rolled that noob. He ended up saying that he didn't want to play any more for awhile. He actually went to PlayXP and learnt all that he could about SC2.

After he was reborn, he started rolling me left and right using the signature Korean Protoss build at the time - 4 Gate. At that time I was Bronze on the SEA servers for about 2 months or so. He took a week to reach Platinum. Whenever he wasn't laddering, he would play games with me. This time, helping me improve. He eventually hit Diamond and switched to Terran while I was stuck in Gold.

We stopped playing for a bit due to exams but we never stopped discussing StarCraft.

TSL 3 had begun and I remember we stayed back after school when the BoxeR vs Sen VODs were available on YouTube. Huddled over my phone, we watched the legend smack Sen around. I've never felt so happy with a friend before. I could see the sparkle in his eyes as he watched his god play. Each game that BoxeR lost was a brief period of silence as we watched the next game of the series. Something magical happened in the last game. BoxeR cheesed in a way that made him say

"That is SC1 BoxeR. The game not the same, but the idea and uh, spirit is the same."

I wish we could watch TSL4 together Jae Hyun. I miss you so much. I was so devastated when you said your dad had lost his job, yet admired your actions as you volunteered to go back to save your dad money.

NaDa meant so much to you as well. We were mad with glee when we saw NaDa pull of that Reaper rush that one time in GSL.

Now, I've decided that every game I play will be in your honour. You remember me as the Zerg that was infatuated with burrow and Banelings. I will play as the Zerg that was infatuated with burrow and Banelings, forever keeping in my mind how you rage-quit when I destroyed your army with something you never knew existed in the game.

What's keeping you from still staying in contact with him? I have several friends who moved away halfway across the world and we still stay in touch..

He's very busy in Korea. And sporadic IMs just don't cut it.

That is so sad I wish I had friends who played sc2 that weren't sub-bronze. Try skyping with him or something?

That is so cute and so sad at the same time. Bromances like this makes life worth living.

Maybe in time you can either get back in touch with your Korean friend or find a new one just as good.

Finding someone who is as passionate as you were and who you could get along with and spend time together while enjoying each other's company is fantastic in itself. It's true that he had to move back but his move was a noble one and all the memories that were built will never be forgotten. As mentioned, I would try to keep in touch with him even if the IMs aren't the same, but, at least you maintain the friendship until you two one day meet again. Who knows, maybe you'll take a trip to Korea in the near future and you two will meet up? One can dream and one can hope!

this is super cute. thought that there would be 3 disparate blogs about all of the above things, but this made for a lovely story ^^

... although i'm sure your friend would want you to branch out into things that didn't make him rage quit...

Thanks for the responses! I'll definitely keep everything in mind. Maybe one day I can visit him, haha.

Most of my best friends at the moment came about through the Starcraft 2 Facebook friend finder. I mean, I knew most of them in my previous lives, but we were never close. Now we Skype and play games most nights and we even formed the SC2 boy band Viva la Dirt League. I also formed a game development company wish one of them which is now another huge part of my life. It's like a plethora of Bromance thanks to Starcraft.

Azera, you need to get him to join TeamLiquid, then he can read this cute story about you two...then you can harass him over PM. Everyone wins!

Interesting that you're from NZ, heh. When I was there my cousin didn't know anybody in their school (Auckland Grammar) that played. I think it's great that your friendship was built upon StarCraft

Eh, he doesn't have much time for things like this
