3000

I skipped my 2000th post either with Mapping or Mafia related things. I don't even remember which post it was. I tried to find out, but apparently only R1CH can do that! But 3000 is another milestone, and one I'm happy to celebrate. So, as is tradition, it’s time for me to give something back to the community. In this case, I’m posting a battle report from a game of Mechwarrior 4. I found the basic writeup in a really old folder on an external hard drive, and I’ve polished it up and added things I remember. Hope you enjoy!

+ Show Spoiler [Click here for Battle Report] +

When I play games today, I try to apply this idea. “Never Give Up, Never Surrender” is a popular phrase among my LoL friends. I also recently started playing Dwarf Fortress, and god damn is it difficult. But I’m not giving up yet! And, I’m sure this philosophy will serve me well when MechWarrior:Online comes out. I’ve already got my Founders Elite package, breaking my rule that I wouldn’t buy another $60 game before playing extensively. I’ll eventually end up paying a lot more than that - I need to get a Joystick, preferably a mid-90s Sidewinder Precision 2. I use a lot of ancient gaming equipment; my mouse is 8 years old, and I’ve got a new-in-box-unopened one of the same model being shipped right now (Logitech MX-310). Even people who use nothing but Razer or Steelseries admit that it's the most comfortable mouse they’ve ever held.

I’d also like to to thank my Mafia friends who played a great game in iGrok’s Good Clean Old-fashioned Mafia, it was a lot of fun and convinced me to keep hosting and playing in games. Next up for me is Samurai Champloo Mafia and Cat-astrophe :3 Mafia with GMarshal and GreYMisT. Should be good!

The Map of the Month Pro-Am tournament is also coming up - I’m excited to be one of the Pros participating and I’m looking forward to helping an up-and-coming mapper win the prizemoney! Huge props to Plexa for setting this up.

Lately, almost everything just seems to be going right for me. I got a new terrific job, I moved to Colorado where everything is gorgeous, I’ve got a girl in my life, I’m learning to cook more, I got to hike the Flatirons (it’s a Colorado thing) - sometimes things just go right. Now if only Riot could fix their servers...

Anyways guys, this is getting long (though not nearly as long as my 1,001 Post blog lol), so I’m out for now. Shoutouts to the [331]st of old, GMarshal, GreYMisT, Radfield, Tumba, Vorap, Sleepercells, Darkened, Nooby, Sympo, Plexa, monitor, ragoo, Rae, and all the other people I’m surely forgetting. And thanks to TeamLiquid. Sure, every community has its good and bad, but the friends I’ve made here have kept me here for more posts than on any other forum.

And finally, some more good music. A song that's been stuck in my head for months even though I don't speak the language, and I don't mind a bit:

P.S. BoxeR, if you switch to Protoss I’ll forgive you, but only if you sign my painting.

Hey, that write up was very well done, I really enjoyed reading it. I havnt played any of the mechwarrior games since I was a kid, but this writeup makes me want to pick it up again ^^.
I hear there are two somewhat similar mech games coming out soon, do you have a preference for either of them?
and is it absolutely necessary to have a joystick to play the game?

5 stars, I hope I read more mechwarrior battle reports in the future.

Great BattleReport makes me nostalgic for when I played Mech 2 and 3. I never got into 4 that much but I am looking forward to MWO.

A very solid post of 3k

Another great writeup.

Here is another writeup by grok referring to the Sunder comment.

Question: When you saw sniper, what are the snipers aiming for? I'm guessing by your use of "geometry" that they tried to core from long distance? or shoot the cockpit?

MW Tactics is a true Tabletop-to-PC port. It looks very good, but I've always preferred the sim to the tabletop - blasphemy I know xD

I loved Mech 3 as well. I think Pirahna is going to do a good job combining the good parts of 3 and 4, and bring some more tabletop elements into the game!

Bah, you're making me want to dig out my old MW4 CDs and reinstall. Or at least mess around with BattleTech and check out some of the configurations you were using. Unacceptable!

Nice report though. That was a pretty interesting story. I didn't know people played MW4 at a competitive level. Does the Atlas see much play? I always liked it more than the Daishi, but it might just be because it looks more interesting.

Sniping cockpits wasn't really possible except on any of the Wolf series - Timber Wolf, TimberWolf MKII, Dire Wolf (MadCat, MCMKII, Daishi). You sniped either to core them out or pick off arms if they had arm-heavy weaponry, since arms were much weaker. It depended on the weapon too, with Gauss Rifles which took time to travel, you generally went for the CT or Legs (though you never admitted you were aiming to Leg lol). With Lasers you could be much more precise, at the expense of some range.

Neither one really saw play. They are too slow and too big of a target. BigCity was the only map you'd really ever see them used.

An exception would be if you were playing against a lore-abiding Lyran team. Then you'd be facing Atlases no matter the map.

Which SJ and league was this, iGrok?

Trouble with canon units is they're worse than the village bicycle for finding out who's been there when.

Bushies could be headed as well, you just had to get above them.

"Geometry" is the MW term for a 'mech's hitbox layout. 'Mechs have multiple body sections which you can target for different effects, for example blowing off an arm that carries their primary weapon. In practice, you mostly wanted to shoot their torsos, because knocking one of those out would kill the 'mech in short order. Centre was the best, but left and right were also fine.

Some 'mechs had particularly exposed centre torsos that could take fire from many angles (like the daishi), very flat bodies that made it easy to pick your shots when facing them (like the awesome), or weird sticking-out bits that were hilariously easy to shoot from ridiculous angles but still counted as torso (like the mauler). These 'mechs were considered to have poor geometry, making them squishy.

'Mechs with good geometry tended to have small CT hitboxes, arm hitboxes extending onto the torso, special disposable sections that acted as extra armour, or wedge-shaped bodies that made it very difficult to focus CT/RT/LT when the 'mech was moving.

EDIT: oops, double.

I'm not sure what league :3, GdawG handled all that, I just showed up to play xD
It was around 2003 if that helps?

I've tried reassembling the 331st on MWO but so far no one has showed up :/

And yeah there are a couple others, like Atlas eye and other things but in general headshots didn't happen unless you were in one of a couple mechs is my point. At least back when I was playing, I stopped in 2004-05ish so maybe things changed?

Not really, there were lots of leagues and SJ is probably the most popular clan name of all time. One of the SJs was excellent, back in the day, but there's no real way to tell.

No, heading was still really rare. Some were easier than others and sometimes you could skew it, but it never became bankable.
