Hmm.
I think you should really take a break. Take a break, casually watch some Terran streams (DeMuslim, ForGG, etc) and try to get yourself feeling a bit happier OUTSIDE of SC2.
Then when you do come back, I recommend getting coaching. You cannot look at this game with the mindset of winning games, you must look to constantly, constantly be improving the LITTLE things in your game that add up in the end. Do you have all your units on 1 hot key? Stop doing that. Even if you completely fail at first at managing 2-3 hotkey armies, force yourself to learn it. Do you miss production cycles often? Queue up units/scvs. You're not in high masters, queueing up units won't hurt your macro to the point that it will lose you games. Are you supply blocked often? Over make depots until you realize when you need to make them and how many you need for your build.
If you ARE constantly doing these things and still not improving, perhaps a race switch is in order. If, after an extended period of time, that STILL doesn't solve your problem, you simply might just not be suited for SC2 at higher levels and have reached your limit. I don't think that's the case though, I simply think you don't know HOW to improve, and are just grinding out ladder games. Yes, you may watch streams, read guides, etc, but you need to know how to improve in game.
Good luck buddy, but remember, prioritize whatever issues you may be having in real life over your SC2 issues. |

the easiest way to stop yourself from becoming obsessed with something like starcraft is to videotape yourself playing it for a while. just set up a camera pointing at you sitting at the computer and let it record for a while.
go back, watch it. i think you'll be surprised just how it feels to watch yourself from the outside playing something for hours. you become acutely aware of how much time you're sinking into this game. |

Maybe some people are just better suited for certain races (or maybe Toss really is easier at our level ) either way, maybe a switch will generate better results.
this might be the best advice in the thread
Not even trolling, but I was going through the exact same thing. I couldnt for the life of me get above low diamond with terran. I then switched to toss, got to top 8 masters in a week playing lower teir pro players. switched back to terran now I can keep up with top masters players (my protoss is bad again though :/) |

I would definitely, definitely quit the game or at least take an extended break. Life is about moderation and balance, and it sounds to me like there is no balance in your life right now. Right, you are just purely in a psychological rut. In my opinion it would not matter if it was Sc2, LoL, alchohol, marijuana or drugs. I mean you seem incredibly unbalanced right now, and that would not only affect your play severely but just how youre overall well being.
Definitely just take a huge break, get to the gym, as your coworkers to hang out, and try and get in touch with family and old friends. And if you feel like you cannot do all that on by yourself lean on someone who cares about you or go see a psychiatrist.
As to your actual Starcraft play, fuck starcraft, stop playing it. |

Yeah and just adding Jinro's wording to this

Also, I can emphasize with a ton of the feelings you have (believe it or not). I actually don't think it's nearly as much about natural talent as you think, it's just about having the right mindset for learning, and actually still wanting to play and not playing because you are chasing ladder points.
None of that matters tho, the game is clearly not a healthy component of your life right now and you should find something else to do with your time.

Not entirely true.
People are different. Sometimes going cold turkey is the way for them to get the most success. Now while I don't agree with people telling the OP how to go ABOUT quitting I really think he should quit...no matter how he does it.
That being said I'm not going to tell him how to live his life. The guy is addicted, no question, but he can remain that way if he wants. He clearly is aware of it. |

The concept that anyone can be genetically "crap" at this game is rediculous.
In the end, true improvement comes down to having focused, attainable goals.
You have to know what you want to achieve before you can make any measure of progress. Likewise, you must quantify progress in order to know how much you have improved.
Instead of setting vague goals for yourself, such as "I want to get better at SCII," try setting specific goals.
THIS guide teaches you how to set proper goals which lead you towards improvement.
All the other advice in this thread is also valid. You need to live a healthy lifestyle. GO work out again, watch less streams, and do less SCII in general. Pick 1 pro player that you really like to watch.
The trick is to play less SCII, but make the time you do play more effective.

You will either gradually wean yourself off and addiction, or stop it all together at once. The latter is reffered to as going 'cold turkey'. |

Yes, obviously like everything else, some people are more gifted than others. BUT, getting out of platinum, or getting to masters is possible. If your spending so much time and not seeing results perhaps the way your practicing is not right? Do you have people you practice with, or just ladder? joining a clan can make it interesting, and give you people to practice with. As stated by other people, check out pro replays, not vods, replays, and try to copy their builds, and try to get the timings right.
But aside from that it's important to get things straight in your life first, try to wean yourself off sc, you'll notice that you automatically start to get okay at sc once you balance out things.Last edit: 2012-07-02 17:52:31 |

My advice to you is simple:
If you're using Windows --> Start --> Control Panel --> Install / uninstall --> Starcraft 2 --> "Are you sure? Y/N" "Y"
You'll feel much better afterwards. A sense of freedom, like you suddenly have time. You only have one life, don't waste it on things that don't matter like this game. You should not be playing any game if you're not having fun and not getting any money from it.
When in you're deathbed, i'm pretty sure you won't be regretting not having played SC2 more.Last edit: 2012-07-02 18:00:50 |

Your 1st and main problem is race choice. Try easymode protoss. You can also try zerg, but its lil bit harder than protoss.

I want to contribute to this thread.
Silverwolfe it is important to thrive in all aspects of live in order to have succes and reach the goals we set for our selfs. Therefore it is paramount to live and stay healthy, sleep no more and no less then you need and exercise in what ever way you can overcome. Your skill in starcraft is greatly influenced by your overall condition. When it comes to SC2, if it is truly what you want to excel at, then you should play with the attitude of any other athlete. Be serious about your practise, dont just ladder. I strongly recommend finding a practise partner or a coach. In my experience, it is much slower to improve on your own.
ATM it seems like you need to take a break from gaming on order to see things clear. Everyone needs a break sometime even from the things we love the most. I wish you the best! |

You gave up your friends and social life and dropped out of college and have 1500 league wins? Lol. I have lots of friends, a good social life (going out, working out and shit) and passed my final exams with all As and have 2500 league wins. I don't know what the fuck you doing. Plus I'm high masters.
What I'm trying to tell you with this is I only watch GSL code s and only when Mvp or MKP play, I guess that makes the difference bro. Watching all this bullshit is just that - bullshit.
I sincerely believe the reason you do not improve is because you do not understand this game. Anyone with at least 60-80apm (depending on the race) can be masters. I do not believe that there are physical constraints that could keep you from getting into masters, not for nothing, but I think it's an intelligence issue. From experience I can tell you that people further down the leagues tend to be dumber.
I don't mean to shamelessely plug myself here, but maybe this tutorial on how to improve helps you: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=328028 It simply offers a practice regiment and tells you how to do and what to focus on. If you follow it with discipline (which you should have after what I read?) you'll be masters eventually.
Stop watching streams and tournaments and play. 1500 league wins is nothing for what you have sacrificed to achieve that. And start having a social life, unless you play 14 hours a day (and try to get into the gsl) you should have enough spare time. 2 hours a day is more than enough to reach masters - especially on NA.

Wow... I never thought I'd see the day when Jinro would be giving me advice. I guess all things considered after making/reading through this thread, I should really try to find interests besides starcraft. It feels really bitter and I'll keep feeling that call to play and try to get promoted, but I guess that everyone in this thread must be telling me the same thing for a reason. I don't think I can just turn my back on starcraft because honestly and truly, I love this game. I love watching the tournaments, I love following the players, I love learning new builds and watching new builds get used in tournaments, I love watching the BW players switch, I love our community and our casters. I guess the only problem is myself and what I've let my life become. It feels good to hear someone like Jinro tell me that it's not just about talent and that I could improve if I had the right mindset, but I guess the most important thing right now is trying to get my life to a point where I can say I have a healthy mindset. People in these threads and even people in my life (at home, former friends, co-workers) all tell me I seem like I don't have a healthy mindset about things. I will reduce how much I play and try not to be so obsessed with the game, I'll try to find other interests and things I can enjoy. And maybe when I have a balanced life I can enjoy this game with a healthy state of mind and improve that way.
I honestly didn't see the numbers posted - 1500 wins... not that many games really, yeah there's people who will be in masters league in this time and you probably aren't playing productively, but I definitely wouldn't conclude it as some kind of talent deficiency. Just... you are probably not really playing with the proper mindset to actually improve.
HOWEVER, all the other things you said, dropping out of college, frustration with the game (the game is supposed to be fun unless you are trying to become a progamer, and even then it should STILL be fun most of the time, just not always)... You should fix those things, then incorporate SC as a healthy hobby.
Fwiw, I was in a similiar boat many years ago, although I did aspire to be a progamer and kinda lucked my way into it eventually.
EDIT: Which is probably, as far as demotivationals to get someone to quit SC2, probably the worst closing statement ever. But you've said your goal isn't to be a progamer in the first place, and I can promise you that if you were to start your career while in a mindset of frustration right from the beginning, you will HATE the game in <6 months time.
Cliffs:
Quit. Get life in order. Decide if you think it's worth playing after that. You need perspective, this whole "Can't quit, love it too much" is only because you are right in it now, and can't see anything else. Find other things you like to do, because even if in the end you really do want to have SC be a part of your life, for it to be healthy it cannot be your WHOLE life.Last edit: 2012-07-02 18:24:57 |
