Why I feel lucky

So as everyone knows one of the problems with gaming a lot is carpel tunnel. (will pc gaming is all I do anyway). I focus a lot of my game time on starcraft 2 and I spam a lot, move as fast as I can which I imagine can make it worse.

So in bw when I played that in 2009 I remember playing my first game and averaging 88 apm I think it was? Not fast obviously, but I got into the progaming scene got very interested. I remember watching Jaedong and seeing how fast he moved made me think "wow how do they move so fast?". Now I am obviously never going to get that fast, but now of days I consider myself decently fast in speed being able to move at about 300 apm (obviously EAPM is lower ). My sc2 apm being about 200+ which is like 300 something if you times it by whatever it is I believe.

So I started bw in end of may/early june of 2009. I had a bad position with my hands and so around october/november my wrists started hurting. I did nothing about it. Now for most people this would make them regret this in a couple years. Me? I would say I got incredibly lucky.

Yes my wrists started hurting, they got irriritated but it wasn't to bad. I didn't tell anyone as I was being dumb. My wrists never got worse. I eventually bought these bead things that you wrest your wrists on about a year after the pains started. This made my wrists feel a little better now that they were more even and not on the hard wood of my table. Now my wrists still hurt, but they never got better. I had this problem for about 2 in a half years or so before I finally went to the doctor.

They did their tests to see if I had carpel tunnel or whatever and they didn't bring me any numbness, no pain and all was fine. I told him everything obviously and how long I was having it. He told me since it wasn't that bad obviously due to not much pain and it only happening when I play a lot of starcraft to try wrist braces. So I bought one and now my wrist problems are gone.

I think of it now how stupid I was not to see a doctor when I first started having irritation, but I also reflect on how lucky I got. I can look at many progamers stories on wrist problems, Flash, MVP, TLO, etc. They all had bad problems and I was getting some pain but it never got worse. It never hurt my playing and again as said many times it just stayed the same. I finally see a doctor and it took about 1-2 months for any sort of irritation/pain to be gone.

I do not wear it while playing sc2 (this hurts my performance), but I am wearing it almost no matter what when I am on the computer other then playing sc2. Even though my wrists don't hurt/irritate anymore I still do it because it will prevent it from happening again.

I just can't help but be so thankful that my stupidity didn't hurt me worse. My wrists could have gotten so much worse but for some reason they never did. Why did I post this? I don't know I just felt like it. I have read many stories of people having problems and it actually effecting their lives. It stopped them from doing something they enjoyed or stopped them from whatever. I am just so glad that my stupidity in not seeing a doctor sooner didn't hurt me like it could have.

I could have been one of those people who had to stop playing pc games all together because of this or at least for 6 months and hope it got better. I read about people who stopped using the pc for the most part for 6 months and still had problems. I thank my wrists for being little ballers and not letting the pain get worse or effect my life in anyway other then some irritation when I could have been one of the people who have a lot more pain/problems then I did.

Thanks for reading!

Thanks for sharing. I've had sore wrists before, not fun. Weight lifting I would notice it too. Right now it doesn't bother me at all. But that could be cause I have a different keyboard than my old laptop.

Nope that's all I did. I bought these IMAK ergobeads which helped and then a wrist brace that I literally bought for 10$ at a store. Worked great for me did nothing else.

What's a good wrist brace? I'm looking on Amazon but I have no idea what is good and what is not. Can you give me the brand name of the one you bought?

I'm like you in some ways. When I first wanted to get really fast I had really bad practice habits. I stretched my fingers in odd ways which eventually gave me pain and the beginnings of carpal tunnel - which for me was a numbness in my pinky.

I was lucky enough to realize the problem and began fixing my finger patterns and how I positoned my hands on the table to press the keyboard. I realized that the proper way to press keys is in a way that feels natural for the fingers to bend. Don't try to do something unnatural or even painful with your fingers when you press keys. You can't make your fingers more "flexible," only destroy them.

I compounded the beginnings of RSI like an idiot by compressing the top of my wrist, thinking to "push the tendons back in place." What an idiot -_-. Now there is always a bit of soreness when I play, but I makes sure to play fluidly in order to counteract pain.

Another point of advice - don't try too hard to make your hand position on the keyboard stay static. I tried for a long time to make my fingers static over 345 and really hurt myself. Let your left hand pivot on the wrist bone and even lift it into the air to hit some keys. Above all, avoid putting a lot of pressure.

Be light. Fluffy.

I just use an ACE one. This is my exact one right here: http://www.amazon.com/ACE-Wrist-Wrap-Size-Fits/dp/B001ACU11K/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1341219932&sr=8-9&keywords=ace+wrist+brace

I make sure to stretch my wrists and do all those wrist stretches they recommend. there are probably better ones that might work better dunno I just know I bought that at my store for like 10$ and am very happy I did.

Wow that's cheap. I wonder if I can buy that at Walmart?

So you wrist stretch and then wear it - for how long a day?

Also, how often do you stream, and at what times? I keep looking for you on the TL stream list, but I never see you.

I love TL for threads like this. I've worried about my wrist giving out for a long time now.

Hm I wear it whenever I am on the computer (when not playing sc2). I wear it quiet a bit just because it's not uncomfortable at all and no reason not to when just browsing web/watching streams/etc. I wear it for most of the day when not working or at school.

I stream random my common times are between 7-9 est and 12-1 am est.

I've been struggling with wrist pain a lot these days, quite a while since I started having a very mild one, but lately it has increased, no signs of CTS, though I still have to see a doctor, I think I will buy one of those braces and see if it helps.I don't even play that much because of it, but since I transitioned from dota at around GSL Open Season 2 my apm has quickly established around 256 sc2 gears apm which probably doesn't help the poor things.

Yeah if it's getting worse or even if not I would see a doctor. Waiting is bad and it will only get worse for most people T_T.
