| I think what you do as an EMT makes up for your mistakes. It doesn't justify them, but we all make mistakes and do stupid things. What you do makes you a hero. |

Unless you live in Wisconsin, where the first offense is a freebie and it's not treated as a felony until the fourth conviction. DUI laws need to change |

What are things worth to you?
When I was 18 years old I had a rude awakening to life. I experimented with alcohol and it caught up to me. I was pulled over when under the influence of alcohol.
I was given a DUI.
Life changed the moment I stepped out of the car to do the sobriety check.
I won't go into much detail on the events leading directly after.
I have always deep down been a decent human being. After my DUI, I legitimately felt bad. I felt bad that I could have killed innocent people. I could have killed a family...I could have killed children.
I truly understand that I could have taken someones life.
I never have, and never will forgive myself for that.
However, instead of sulking, I decided to make a difference.
I took classes to become an EMT.
For the past four years I have worked as an EMT.
I have arrived on scene to countless car accidents that are result of drunk drivers.
I have climbed into cars mangled to nonrecognition.
Every single time, I am reminded of my mistake.
I think to myself, this could have been me causing this.
It was not until several years later that I realized something very important.
Humans make mistakes.
I drove a vehicle drunk four years ago.
Although the worst decision I have ever made... it has initiated the most amazing path of life I could ask for.
In my career I have saved dozens of lives.
I have held the hands of people stuck in a twisted up car... telling them they will be okay.
I have walked into people's homes, during their worst nightmare, and saved their relative's life.
I have watched people die right in front of me, but with my hands bring them back to life.
I've been through alot.
I think, what are my past mistakes worth to me?
Everything.
I don't forgive myself.
I hope my actions can bring some justice to my past mistakes
If you think about it, the past is only present in our memories, we spend a lot of time reiterating these memories, but in my opinion worrying about your past is just as bad as worrying about what the future might bring, it should bring a lot of people comfort to truly realize that they are here now and only now. You're enjoying what you do at this very moment and you are doing great things. On the one hand, we are in a society where this happens a lot, I mean alcohol abuse is practically 'accepted' and 'normal' in youth culture in the West (of course DUI is more severe):
Someone that didn't party and do crazy things during his youth is considered not normal.
On the other we are taught to feel guilty about it. In all fairness how can one feel guilty about his culture and what it seems 'accepted behavior', and how can someone change it's environment if the only control he/she has is over him-/herself. Concluding that you should not worry, if you feel like you have been given a second chance to do good, then take that chance as good as you can, which means stop worrying about past events. Because memories which bring up these kinds of emotions can form a block on the road of life. Case in point: you can not do good all the time.Last edit: 2012-07-11 08:49:30 |

- Failure doesn't mean you are a failure it just means you haven't succeeded yet. |

When I was 19 I remember driving back with Rachel from picking up a few 24 packs of corona. We were on the interstate and we both opened one and shared it.
When I got back I felt bad about it. Not enough to change my life but enough to tell my girlfriend who was as straight as you can get. She berated me and I admitted how stupid I was; I got over it and moved on. I've never done it since.
When I lost two of my friends at the beginning of this year to a drunk driver that stopped concentrating and veered onto the side of the road I didn't think it could have been me those years before. Me driving the car, killing someones friends. I grew out of doing dangerous shit for the sake of it but your blog has reminded me to reflect on it and remember how lucky I was, you were, that nothing worse than what happened did happen.
I'm a lucky guy that my lessons cost so little. I guess you are too. |
