how to be sad?

Sadness isn't really the right word for it. It's more of a mix of stress, anger, anxiety, just a general feeling of wishing everything in your life was different than how it is. In Elliott Smith's song Between the Bars he describes it as:

"the things you could do, you won't but you might
the potential you'll be, that you'll never see
the promises you'll only make"

Right now I'm in a position where I've basically locked myself into one option for the future. Of course there are no such things as absolutes but this option is the only realistic choice I have. It's something I've always told myself I would never do because of both morality and preference. However if I go through with it I'm guaranteed ( or at least i'm telling myself that) a solid foundation on which to base the rest of my life. Choosing to walk away from this option would mean pretty much starting from 0. I have started from 0 in the past, several times, but because of either bad decision making or subconscious self destruction it always ends up with me having to start from 0 again. The worst part is that going through with my plan would be selling myself short. However I do not even know if I care about that. Sometime during high school I slowly started adding things to the list of stuff I don't care about, and now it's gotten hard to find something that isn't on that list. So how do you make choices when you don't really give a damn about the outcomes? Logically I can work my way through a decision in terms of "which is logically better" but in terms of "which would I prefer" I am lost.

I just realized that I've strayed away from the original purpose of this blog, so enough with the personal stuff and onto the question:

How to be sad? Of course most people don't try to be sad, but once you are in that state what do you do? Do you find something to take your mind off of your current thoughts, or do you indulge yourself for awhile trying to work your way through it? Do you become social or reclusive? Of course I'm not asking for the "correct" answer as that differs from person to person, just looking for your own personal answers.

For me, I always listen to music depending on my mood, so when i'm down I'll usually listen to the melancholy stuff. At first it feels as if my problems are getting worse but eventually I'll come to a strange sort of peace with my situation. I think what helps is realizing a sad song can be just as enjoyable and thought provoking as a more upbeat one.

Enjoy your worries, you may never have them again

Sometimes I really like to get sad. It's a nice emotion actually, it's just that it usually comes when bad things happen to us.
I always watch sad videos or movies like this

Gets me every time

That was so rediculously sad and heartwrecking that I started laughing. Really weird.

And as for the OP: There is no way to really be sad, you get drowned by a wave of despair which leaves you in total apathy and your brain just short of shuts down and leaves you in a zombie like state, because for those few moments of awareness the utter despair sets back in. I really dont understand why you would try to be sad and ask what people do when they are sad. It sounds to me like you want to swim around in your own misery rather than trying to fnd something to be happy about.

to the OP:

I relate to you 100%, in the sense of starting from 0, and eventually ended in some sort of self-destructive manner to loop all around again.

In effect i've created a list like you, but its actually been a list of things im interested in. I have a really bad habbit of quitting things that no longer interest me. I have succeed in the past, and failed at the same time. I have a huge knowledge base on psychology/sociology/drumming/sound audio engineering/interactive design/web design and development and game design. Some of which i know more of than others, some of which i have qualified in, and some of which i have quit.

You say that you have put yourself into a situation where you are forced into one thing. Thats bullshit.
You can always follow your instincts, and pick up something else.
In fact, the nature that you have observed within yourself - its probably a good thing. Now that you can focus and require the skills needed for one particular thing. It will mean when you eventually start at 0, which will happen due to your nature, you will have something to fall back on.

It wasnt untill i developed a sound understanding and qualification in something i was interested in that i had even more options. I could have pursured a career in web development, made 80k a year, lived a really well normal life. But instead i have that to fall back on, and have followed my instincts into a field that i have been dreaming about for years.

Eventually, if you keep searching for what ever it is your finding, you will come across some skills and knowledge that will stick along the way. Use that as a security, and keep searching, because one day you will find what your looking for. And if you dont, atleast you have that one opportunity that most people wont have in the first place.

As for being sad, If you REALLY want to be sad. Find a girl that will cheat on you, and you will feel true pain.

You always have options.

Things are going to shake up a lot in the next couple of decades - nothing is certain.

+1, also the girl cheating thing is bullshit, you'll prolly give a shit about the girl anyways.
It's hard to be sad when you don't really care about anything, I think it's better.(I give a shit about everything but my family.)
