a murder story that goes beyond

we are, quite literally, bombarded with news of murders each and every day. in many cases, it is innocent people that are in the wrong place at the wrong time, and it is quite sad. but it comes to a point where your mind becomes a bit numbed to the thought and you kind of stop thinking twice about it.

there was a recent murder in florida.

a door to door salesman was shot in the head on a man's driveway for trespassing.

A co-worker who witnessed the shooting said Rainey had knocked on Roop’s door, but received no answer. While Rainey was walking down the drive-way, Roop pulled up in his pickup truck and asked why Rainey was at his house. Rainey explained that he was selling steak and seafood. The witness said Roop then pulled out a black handgun and shot Rainey. As Rainey lay on the ground, Roop fired another bullet into the back of his head.

of course this all hearsay based on witness accounts which may not be factual. but regardless. i have family in florida, and have an acute idea of its troubled economy. i myself am a couple of years off from my 30s. the victim, its not the best job in the world at that time in your life. but to have your life ended in such a manner ...

for once in a long while, i am very, very saddened at this murder story.

Oh wow, I think the idea of materialism had taken the minds of so many people. Now, they all think that everyone will sneak in their houses to steal their properties.
After all, we just want to be happy, don't we?

I used to sell door to door, one time this old dude told me to wait while he brings his gun, needless to say as soon as he turned around to get it I was driving. Some people will make up ridiculous stories just to get you in trouble and call cops with that material. And that's quiet areas, I have no idea what it's like in the city.

I used to be a vacuum cleaner salesman, but in Canada, so I had no fear.

I can't imagine someone doing that, it's beyond all moral sense. I'm picturing a clean-cut young man, and it just seems crazy.

I was born in a hospital about 20 miles away from that guys house. When you see a no trespassing sign in Cape Coral it's really for the best if you don't enter their property. Crazy rednecks up in there.

Its not trespassing as the city has 30ft leeway off the road. Unless the house had some stupidly long driveway its murder and he can't claim trespassing. Now if only I had my way murderers would get death sentenced as the cost to feed and house a murderer for the rest of his life is a lot more than a $1 bullet. (I know that they do injection but w/e I wanted an easy cost comparison)

This is just so depressing...

Door-to-door salesmen, I think, probably have it really really tough. And to have his life ended this way by some crazed gun-toting maniac (if my interpretation of the situation is correct) is appalling. Hope justice is served on this one.

Executing someone is actually more expensive due to the extensive appeal proces that comes with a death sentence/

Now, if you want to get the costs of an execution down, you are going to have to start by chopping away at a person's ability to get a fair trial, which in turn will make it more likely that an innocent man is accidentaly executed.

So, to punish murderers and keep the costs low, you are going to have to accept having to murder a few innocents every year.

It's unfortunate that it's true. I wish the appeal process wasn't so costly. Although I don't think the price of feeding and housing a murderer should justify his sentencing of death (if the cost of sentencing/appeals was lower), it would just be one more pro of giving murderers death penalty instead of letting them live out their lives in full. I'm sure a lot of people think like this too. But the risk of harming innocents is too much if we don't put full support into the appeals process, which in turn becomes very expensive.

The only way for death sentence for murderers to become cheaper is to handle it yourself.

As a side note, does anyone know if it's still cheaper to house + feed people who are known without a doubt to be guilty? Like that guy who went into the movie theater and started killing everyone. I heard he was getting a quick death sentence, but does anyone know or think if that would cost any less than say the murderer mentioned in the OP, who apparently only had 1 witness? (I still think he should pay with his life for murder tho)
Why do bad things happen to tasty people?

Yes I know, and I would be prepared to accept that. I would be fine with 1 in 700 being innocent. It's just the Prison System in the United States needs to be overhauled as the life-sentence are given out like cookies. Fuck that I'm not going to pay the state to furnish a lifer until he rots in jail.

No sense of irony at the notion of being outraged at murderers to the point of wanting to kill them, only to in turn accept the idea of murdering an innocent?

There is nothing noble or hard-line about being prepared to accept the sacrifice of others. It doesn't take a big man to throw someone else under the car.

I will agree that the US needs to overhaul its prison system, but in the exact opposite of what you are suggesting. They need to drastically lower minimum sentences, giving judges a greater ability to judge each case on an individual basis.

Prisons are bloated with prisoners that have long learned their lesson and are only being alienated to the point of being unable to rejoin society upon release. The US imprisons too many people for too many years.

Well what I was trying to convey is all life without chance of parole should be death sentences. When there are prisons who ONLY house lifers its like whats the point? Its like either just sentence them to death or wait X amount of years for them to die, while paying their upkeep. The result is the same, they die.

The result for everyone in the world is the same, we die, that doesn't invalidate their right to life.

First of all, the people in question would probably disagree a great deal that there is no difference. They still see their kinds, their spouses, they might have turned to religion or philosophy and had a change of heart, hoping to make up for their wrong-doings.

Some might try to work, some might try to get a degree, some might be writing books, some might try to dissuade others from following their path and give back to their communities.

Just because they will inevtiably die in prison, doesn't mean they deserve to die.

The result is only the same if you lack the empathy to even briefly place yourself in their shoes and understand that they, regardless of having committed a crime, are still people.

The video on that page (link) raises a lot of questions about why someone percieved as so dangerous was just there. THe story really does suck though, I imagine it's a bad enough job as it is without having to worry about being shot by some crazy.
