TL;DR I think NA server has a split personality.

So this afternoon was feeling good. Was 10th in my division. Facing other high ranked diamonds and pushing into the top eight. At times I was crushing! I went 4-3, and secured a top 8 spot.

Thought I'd continue my good run tonight. I went 0-7. That's seven losses in a row. Got crushed. Not even close to winning a game. Down to rank 22.

This isn't an isolated occurrence either. It seems if I play during my daytime (that's Japan time), I do so well and move up the ranks. Anytime I play at night, even just after work, I get crushed by the same ranked people I was beating just a few hours ago.

This could be down to fatigue, and I'm sure that's a small part of it. Tonight I thought I'd try and quantify this. My APM remained fairly constant, and wasn't that much different to the day games. I don't believe this is the main factor.

You see it's not just that I'm losing, it's how I'm losing. Blink/obs timings, warp prism/sentry/ramp blocks, expert muta/ling control, battlecruiser tech switches. These strats are a totally different breed to what I see Diamonds doing at other times. I may be losing simply because I'm not familiar with them, but then why metagame difference between day and night?

So whats the deal NA server? Anyone else experienced this phenomenon?

You're playing Koreans obviously. I used to see patterns in different time zones when I played on pgtour and iccup.

I play on the EU server. In the day, I can easily make 4-5-6 wins in a row. Since I continue at night, about 2 games get serious and each game is a struggle, have games in TvT lasting an hour, TvP and TvZ of about 40 minutes. It is so physically draining that I can't usually continue past 2 cause I have to get up to go to work at 6 the next day. Sometimes, if I play the whole night, about 4 o'clock I meet players that I shouldn't be matched against.

Think players with win ratio 100/23 with far better micro than me. And I usually can crush a normal ladder toss/terran in less than 10 mins. I once lost to a toss on shakuras who was 20 workers behind cause of my hellion drop, but somehow managed to claw his way back into it due to CRAZY stalker micro vs my vikings (he had collosi). I think he sniped like a viking before each engagement, he retracted back his obs whenever i was scanning to kill it, in the same time blinking forward. Yeah, I could see class in there. Honestly, If I had more opponents like this, I would love it, cause I would probably become better a lot faster. Doubt they were koreans though. I think more like hardcore players or smurf pros.

I actually have found similar things on the NA server. For the most part, players I come across in the morning-afternoon aren't particularly good. They don't have effective builds, their micro is poor, and their decision making is pretty abysmal.

At night I've found myself having good game after good game. Most players are much better than the caliber I find during the day, have an effectively timed and thought out build order, and tend to crush me if I'm not playing my best. I also wonder why this is, my guess being that the players that wait to play 'til midnight and after tend to be ones who are more "dedicated" (read: hardcore) and probably put much more effort into becoming better players.

I've also noticed that the amount I am BMed exponentially increases the later it gets. It's neat someone else notices this trend as well, I too wonder the cause

This is the opposite for me. When I play in around noon-3pm the players I find are particularly better, but when I play between 1am and 3am I end up with a higher win percentage. I also get all-in'd a lot more later in the evening, and I play terran, so if i spot it early enough I can usually hold it (unless its blink on antiga... still haven't figured out how to hold that one effectively really).

About the same thing happens to me. I play on the Korean from NA sometimes and my opponents become exponentially more difficult during the day time here in America, but then again I've seen EVERYTHING on the KR/TW server.

You'll know if your facing a Korean Terran if he goes with what I call the "Korean Mech" build. The key composition would be Thors and Banshees basically, banshees counter infestors with proper micro and spread. And then they will bild whatever small support units to crush anything else you throw at them.

I thought about this a long time ago, and I don't think its fatigue. Even when I wake up at a weird time (like 4-5 AM) to watch GSL and play some games, the players who I'm vs'ing is slightly better, but not enough to lose 0-7.

Reminds me of the nighttime C level play on ICCUP few years back. Lol what a funny thing it was.

That's really weird I think we're on the same time zone (EDT) but I have a totally different experience. 8pm to 2am is tougher, 3am to 3pm is easier.

Although there are a few people that are also staying up/waking up for GSL and they're usually pretty good

In general, people tend to play at night and therefore all the smurfs and such will be on then. Also people aren't as tired if they are like me, nightowls, and thus play better than in the morning.
