Stuff to bring to college

I don't wanna make this a huge ass blog, so lets keep it simple.

I move out of my house the 20th, spend some time with relatives, move into my dorm at U of Illinois on the 23rd. Basically I have a week to pack my stuff. What I'd like is advice on what things I should think about bringing.

Thankfully, I'll be able to use this as a list so I don't forget anything.

In a box I'll mail to my relatives early so I don't have to pay airplane luggage price and have to drag it with me around the airport: clothes. Most of my clothes., shoes included.

I'll keep a weekender with what I'll wear between the 20th-23rd, unpack when I get to my dorm, ezpz.

Now the hard part. Here's what I have so far (bear with me, I'm literally looking around in my room)

- Laptop, phone, other personal electronics including my Das/Siberia/Mouse, Camera, watches, and calculator, bags

- EZ button/GG button

- TL Posters, (3 of them)

- Personal Items (cologne, deodorant, toothbrush/paste..), I'll buy soap/shampoo in big sizes when I get to campus

- Picture frame with some friends/family for when I get lonely.

And then I'm stuck. I could use some advice.

There'll be a minifridge/microwave at the dorm ala my roommate, and I'll be buying a TV/xbox for us when I get there.

Apart from that, what am I missing?

Much appreciated.

shower sandals, nails/pushpins for posters, baby powder for shoes, laundry detergent, quarters for laundry mat, power strip (maybe 2 if you both use a lot of electronics), linens, usually a good idea to get a space organizer for your closet (like stackable shelves or something of that sort, since usually closets are small), scissors, floor rug is usually a good thing to have, stuff to clean bathroom/room with (duster, toilet cleaner, small bottle of bleach, etc), ethernet cord for internet maybe router, school supplies are usually a good thing to bring, so you don't have to worry about them when you are at school the first few days/weeks before it starts. headphones/earbuds, bed stackers (those things you put under bed posts to raise the level of bed I used them and it helped a ton because i could fit a lot of storage under my bed), buying an external harddrive is a good idea, if you and roommate like same music a sound system would be a good thing (but only if you like same music or you would get annoyed at eachother when the other is listening to music you don't like.), movies/dvds you like to watch, maybe a few good books, nail clippers, shaving equipment, alarm clock, duct tape, screw driver, hammer, printer, flashlight, sports shoes (if you play any sports), lighter, candle (even if you don't use it in any "romantic" way, it can help keep room smelling fresh, calender, bookshelf.

As a highschool graduation gift i was given a toolbox which was crammed full of a bunch of this essential stuff. it was a way to keep it organized and reduce the space used in the dorm since they are usually small. I would recommend getting something similar, though it is not essential to have some kind of box for the important/random stuff.

I misread this and thought there were forum posters from TL that you had in your room and were gonna pack up with you to move.

Dishes and stuff if you aren't getting a meal plan from the university.

Pretty much whatever you want to bring, you should. As long as it isn't a ridiculous amount of stuff. I don't have that much stuff so I didn't have a problem deciding. You don't seem to have a lot either so I would say everything but that's just me.

I take it you are going to a university far away from home without most of your friends with you. It's a fun, new experience. gl.

LOL

Oh i forgot linens, I have them waiting at my relative's house already.

Its fine to recommend things for me to buy after moving but before getting into my dorm.

shower sandals, will buy there
nails/pushpins for posters, they only let us use poster putty, will buy there
baby powder for shoes, ??
laundry detergent, will buy there
quarters for laundry mat, can do there, lol
power strip (maybe 2 if you both use a lot of electronics), yessir
linens, check
usually a good idea to get a space organizer for your closet (like stackable shelves or something of that sort, since usually closets are small), will look into
scissors, part of school supplies, will get there
floor rug is usually a good thing to have, do you recommend this heavily? i didn't get one of the ones they install cause i don't think we need it, but i can always grab something for the open part of the floor we'll walk on, but not under the beds
stuff to clean bathroom/room with (duster, toilet cleaner, small bottle of bleach, etc), done for us, thankfully
ethernet cord for internet maybe router, i think all we get is a cord, actually. no routers allowed in my dorm, free wifi around school. i'll look into a splitter
school supplies are usually a good thing to bring, so you don't have to worry about them when you are at school the first few days/weeks before it starts. i'll get it in chicago, post flight but before move
headphones/earbuds, i need new earbuds, headphones is np, I have my siberiav2
bed stackers (those things you put under bed posts to raise the level of bed I used them and it helped a ton because i could fit a lot of storage under my bed), my beds are raised, but my roommate and i are doing bunks, at least for a bit
buying an external harddrive is a good idea, i could use this
if you and roommate like same music a sound system would be a good thing (but only if you like same music or you would get annoyed at eachother when the other is listening to music you don't like.), should be ok without, we'll have a TV if needed
movies/dvds you like to watch, on HD
maybe a few good books, textbooks are so expensive T_T
nail clippers, YES lol
shaving equipment, not much facial hair, but ill get razors there
alarm clock, phone
duct tape, will buy, but i hate duct tape after making a fucking boat
screw driver, hammer, will i really need this?
printer, free printing at computer rooms, fuck buying ink
flashlight, will take into consideration
sports shoes (if you play any sports), got my running shoes
lighter, uh o_O
candle (even if you don't use it in any "romantic" way, it can help keep room smelling fresh, calender, bookshelf. this i'll do, though maybe just a regular air freshener

Much appreciated, my comments are largely for me to consider when i organize everything

I have a meal plan, but i'll have some food stuffs available in my dorm of course. no plates unfortunately, nowhere to wash them (bathroom sinks? lol).

That's what I thought, but i wanna make sure I don't forget anything. most of my stuff is clothes and some other smaller stuff, i dont have anything big to bring really.

thank you ^^

Blender.

not having a blender was the biggest annoyance on earth for me and with neither myself nor my roommate having a car we couldn't go buy one.

If you ever move into a suite or a place that otherwise offers a kitchen, bringing or acquiring good cooking skills will elevate you to godlike status heh. Otherwise those were some comprehensive lists and yeah some of those seem pretty unnecessary...

Hm....maybe a power strip in case you don't have enough outlets.

Having an electric kettle was the biggest lifesaver for me. Sure, you can use it for things like those instant cup noodles but the biggest thing was the possibility of making hot tea whenever you needed comforting from homesickness/bad day/cold nights. Or simply when feeling sick. That brings me to point number two, bring your favorite tea with you, whether it be sent by mail to save space or directly with you. Nothing felt better after a long, hard day of schoolwork than playing SC2/watching streams with hot tea by your side and the sound of a roommate raging at LoL in the background. A very satisfying feeling indeed.

Tea, will bring. I don't think I can have an electric kettle, but microwaving water is good enough.

I don't think my roommate plays LoL. Hopefully he'll keep that up and I won't relapse.

I'm gonna need to find a tea thread and do some research

Yupyup thanks! ^^ Got back a handful of days ago actually keke. No worries about off-topic; it's your blog :D

Also hm, if you can find some, there are these compressible bags which can be useful to have. In terms of textbooks, if your class doesn't require you have the latest version, you don't have to get it. The difference between the latest and the second-latest edition can be several hundred dollars in some cases :x

When i moved out i brought with me a bag of clothes (3 pair of jeans, 4 t-shirts, 2 sweatshirts, 2 shirts, 4 pair of socks, 4 pair of underwear, summerjacket and a pair of shoes), my laptop, my phone, my wallet(with condoms), a cheap cellphone (Nokia 3310), a glass, a forke, a knife, a cheramic plate, a pot, a toothbrush, deodorant, shampoo, hairwax and a sleepingbag.
When i moved in to my flat i had no bed so there were one night where i sleept on the floor but i actually like sleeping on the floor so it didn't matter. The next day i bought a madrass and went to a second hand shop and bought a frame for the bed for almost no money. After that i found building stuff fun and relaxing so i built my own bookshelf and table and got away with spending almost nothing for stuff that would have cost be loads of beer bottles(wich turned out be be bad for other reasons then the economy. Failed my first exam due to heavy partying and lack of studies).

Make sure you have all your electronic chargers (phone, laptop, ipod, etc.). Bring an umbrella too.
