A Weird Feeling: August 11

I'm having this weird feeling tonight like I don't really care for the build I've been doing in ZvT and ZvP (14 hatch 15 pool), and I can't put my finger on why. I'll take a look through some of my recent replays to see if I can place why.

What is the state of the game when my spawning pool finishes?
- It is roughly 4:00
- An overlord has just popped (17/26 supply)
- My natural has just finished.
- I have 2 larvae and ~400 minerals.

That sounds like a perfect situation to be able to build two sets of lings and two queens.

Ah, I think I get a little screwed up in general at that point because I kind of muck up overlord timing and don't have a solid followup plan to get me into either lair tech or a third base.

Well, this is great, though! I have something very specific that I can focus on: what feels right to do after 4:00? Just to have it there, I really feel like I need to have an evolution chamber and a roach warren at least. I'm still only in Gold, and if I don't have my roach warren early-ish, then I forget to build it altogether. I can probably use gas for timing things... Let's play the what-if game!

What if I build my roach warren, one evo chamber, and one gas together as soon as I can after having four queens at least queued?
And then maybe one more gas when the roach warren is done. Then I can use the gas to time my lair, and when the lair is theoretically halfway done or so, get the other two gasses or something. Either way, I just need some kind of timing to get into.

Yeah, that's going to need a lot more practice to get it down -- practice against real people too, instead of against easy-peasy AI.

I'll still have to keep working at the timing until I don't have to think about it. That takes a lot of time moreso than effort, I find.

so by the 5 minute mark u'll have 4 queens one gas a roach warren and evo? you'll have no drones, roach warren is redundant cause 4 queens defend helions on 2 bases, evo is ok, but the fastest cloaked banshees will get to ur base is like 6:50 if terran is on one base, so i would build it at like 6:00. Also, helions take 30 seconds to build and the first two helions get to zerg's base at like 5:30 IF terran went factory b4 second command center. This means the only time you would need roaches to defend helions is when he has atleast 8, which would be 7:00. So your roach warren should go down at 6:00 and that's if terran didnt expand first.

Ah, that's good to know! I hadn't thought about it like that -- *why* I feel like I need roaches. The queens are serving the same purpose. Thanks!

In either matchup you'll probably not want to even think about putting either of those buildings (roach warren and evo chamber) down until at least the 6:45 minute mark for any reason unless you aren't playing standard. You should be pumping as many queens as it fits your playstyle and hardcore droning.

After 4:00 and you have your 2 queens, keep building queens when you can fit them in between drones. Depending on your style you can also build a very fast third base and keep it alive with 6-8 queens while powering drones.
