A pattern of temporary interest.

I have a pattern in my life that I've grown to notice.

I will do something fairly regularly for a short period of time (2 weeks to a few months), then stop it completely and do something else.

Examples:
- Guitar
- rubicks cube
- rock climbing
- gym (on and off sorta thing)
- writing in a journal

Some exceptions:
- Running in high school (4 years)
- call of duty (played for a long time before sc2 came out)
- dota (same story, was after cod but before sc2)

I also do it with music. I don't really like to listen to a bunch of different styles for time periods at a time. Instead I have one playlist that I play over and over.
Example:
- ADTR playlist
- Blink-182 playlist
- Taylor Swift playlist
etc.

Just something I've noticed about myself. I'm not sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing.
Thoughts?

I do the same. I liek to try new stuff but when I suck at focusing. I have several juggle/circus stuff around that I learned and then only used a little since. Rubics cube because why not. I just like being able to say: I can do this. I learned to hand stand just because. Double unders just because.

Same thing with music. I find a new band and listen to them all the time for a few weeks. Then a new band.

Its a good thing. Makes you try more different things in life.
Its a bad thing. You'll never be 100% into anything really.

Rubic cubes are the best things to learn.

Hardly takes more than a day to understand that they can be solved through the use of certain combinations, and then you can amaze all your friends by pretending you are some genious because nobody really gets how they work and just randomly spin until they get it.

Other than that, I think they say it takes 27 (or 17) days to make a habit, so if you just keep at it, it might become more natural and less taxing to force yourself to do it.

I'm with you on this one. I often get really obsessed with something for a few months, and then completely drop it. I did this with tennis, Go, and swing dancing, just to name a few.

Positives:
- There's something cool about being a beginner and learning something new
- It's satisfying to see the rapid improvement that comes with starting fresh
Negatives:
- You'll have a harder time REALLY getting into one thing and do it well
A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.

I have a habit of listening to a single song on repeat for days (hundreds of plays) and then not listening to it again for months.

Yeah I definitely agree with that negative. It would be so cool to learn how to play guitar, but I don't think I can just dedicate the time to that for the required years on end. I get bored too easily.

For me it isn't usually a single song, but other that that it's the same. Sometimes it's a three song playlist, sometimes a 15 song playlist (usually all one artist).

Sounds like you just described me. Same thing happens with me. My friends basically just describe it as an "addictive personality" -- in the sense that when I get into something I really dive in head first...but only for maybe a month or two. I keep trying out different "lifestyle hacks" to get myself more motivated to stick with things, but doesn't seem to be working

This is happening because you're getting older. It comes from a narrowing of the imagination. I'm sorry if that sounds condescending but it's the truth. Once you identify the cause of the problem your life will get better.

I suffer from the same problem. My advice would be to meet and interact with as many people as possible and just roll with it. You only truly 'have fun' once you stop giving a fuck about 'having fun'.
Cynicism isn't wisdom; it's a lazy way to say that you've been burned. Seems if anything you'd be less certain after everything you ever learned.
