Today i had one of those encounters that are usually depicted in gag images.

But first some background info: I work as a software engineer for a multinational company. I just graduated in the summer with a bachelors degree in computer science and this is my second job.

Today while returning from my girlfriend's house i stopped at McDonalds to eat something and the man taking my order was an old classmate. We were in the same class from the 1st to the 8 grade, and he always used to tease me and make fun of me, because i was smarter than him (I had the highest grades in my class). He was one of the people that made my life a hell for about 3 years.

Seeing him working there made me very happy somehow. It felt like some kind of justice was done. We recognized each other and talked for 2 minutes (while my order was ready).

I know it's not good to be happy that someone else didn't have as much success as you did, but it felt pretty good.

That made me laugh. I'm sure you mean company.

Maybe he's happy with his job and his life though. Did it feel good because he is in a position you wouldn't want to be in or because he is in a position he doesn't want to be in?

Ooops... missed that.

I don't think anyone's dream job is serving at McDonalds

It's definitely the former .

What if he loved that job. Would you feel the same satisfaction because it's a job with a social stigma?

I can see where you come from.
I was sort of bullied too when I was in Grade 8 by a kid, as I topped every class
I met him on the train the other day, and he's a really nice kid now, very polite, mannered and goes to Uni
Makes me happy

I'm not really a firm believer in karma, but I think if you're a bully or a jerk to people, you won't be very happy with your life... You might end up burning bridges and unnecessarily ending friendships for stupid reasons.

I knew a girl back in college who always bragged about her success and how easy it would be for her to get a job right out of college; needless to say, she wasn't the most popular of people because of her arrogance. She still seems somewhat happy with her life, but she seems to be currently without a full time job (or a job that she's actually content with).

One of the best jobs I ever had involved cleaning public facilities among other duties. It was not glamorous, but it had an elegance and simplicity to it not to mention I would spend everyday out in the sun.

I did move on career wise before it may have been considered, "socially frowned upon," as OP seems to be implying. There are always more subtle pleasantries which, from the outside looking in, aren't always easy to spot.

Yep, a lot of the time I find the more "menial"/physical jobs are more satisfying. I used to work at a Salvation Army and I loved that job.
My failures are my fault. My successes are my fault. To think otherwise is to throw away responsibility for my self.
