My own New Years resolution is to read a few Japanese novels this year. I'm currently reading Umibe no Kafuka (Kafka on the Shore), since Murakami's Japanese isn't too insane to get through as a foreigner, do you think Perfect Blue would be a good choice?
I think you might have to look up some more words compared to Haruki Murakami's novels, but the grammar in Perfect Blue isn't too difficult. If you can read Kafka on the Shore, I think you wouldn't have any issues with this book. Her style is somewhere between a light novel and a classical novel.

I think pen and paper is a great way to start a journal, and just write whatever comes to mind about the day for 5 minutes before you sleep
