I can only speak from my experience with literature on communication and from what my common sense tells me:
Usually the "purely theoretical" points of view ARE quite complex and NEED to be whittled down into manageable parts before you can put them into practice. Most journalists won't even take notice of the theoretical writings about journalism - studying journalism is neither a sufficient nor a necessary condition for being a journalist. Therefore, you will definitely have to "bridge a gap" in order to make theory and practice mix and there will be little literature on how it is actually implemented in everyday journalism.
My advice would be: Take that last week and work HARD. Don't go looking around for the final solution in a single book. Take some manageable theoretical sources that you understand and think yourself on how they can apply to the subject matter. You might make it.
