[Warning: this is a babbling rant]

...but I was wrong.

Specifically I thought I had become a better student during the last fall. In short, I thought I became committed to school. It wasn't rare for me to spend 12 hours there. Which was a huge change from high school, and a significant change from my first two years of college.

I thought that meant I had gathered some internal strength. Like, through my own willpower I had decided to be a better person. lool, no.

It turns out I may have even less will power than before, and that all that had happened was I had good classes (interesting subject, fun classes, good teachers...). I realized this was the case when during this second summer semester term I took this early american history class.

For some fucking reason, I could only satisfy my two remaining non-major (biology that is) credits with this class, as it counts as a "diversity" credit and a history credit. I guess a history class mostly revolving around white people has more diversity than the asian art history class I took.

US universities = rip off. General education is a huge scam, that not only is painful, costs time and money, but worst of all, distracts you from the area you want to specialize in. This puts us at American universities at a disadvantage with our competitors from Europe and elsewhere.

So... here I am in this history class. I'm taking it at a community college (cheaper, easier classes, shorter class meetings, and only needs a 2.0 since it is a transfer credit). Right now I'm struggling to get that 2.0 because I can't bring myself to get participation points (30% of grade). I sit myself down with the material, but for some reason my neurons stop firing, and I can't force myself to do it.

I'm supposed to be posting on the class's online forum :/ About things like "1. Why do you believe that Jefferson is trying so hard to build a wall between the Church and the State? Do you that this concept has been successful in our country today? Should the state be separated or should the government be have some religious influence?"

I just can't! "4. Do you agree with Jonathon Edwards' view of a perfect society? What does Edwards say about finding heaven on earth? How do you think his preaching effected society?"

I'm not sure if it is because I have no will power for things that don't interest me as I alluded to at the beginning, or if I legitimately should be disgusted with having to suffer through this nonsense when it's keeping me from progress in my future career. :/:/:/ :/:/:/:/:/

Wish I could find someone I could pay to do this retarded ape shit.

Well, I have a level of hate for this that is beyond my ability to express in words, so I might go quite high.

It sounds like you might be a bit burned out or something. If you are, you should just take a break for a couple minutes, if you can spare it anyways.

Good luck with your online discussion. Sounds as boring as a college online discussion...

Whenever someone asks me why I look down I say "I have to go to my my early american history class." All they do is laugh.

Dude, if you're going to suggest working fast food chains, suggest corporate work (ie. Corporate McDonald's like management) and not flipping burgers...

Anyways, the most important thing is to stay motivated, whatever it takes. And yea, a lot of humanties is bull and how to bullshit 101 (especially if you're not interested in what is taught), but as long as you know that, writing should be a lot easier (you don't have to agree with what you wrote, you don't even have to like it). As long as you show some line of reasoning it should be okay.

I'd like to see one of you try commenting on this poem by a Puritan woman from New England.

"If ever two were one, then surely we.
If ever man were loved by wife, then thee;
If ever wife was happy in a man,
Compare with me, ye women, if you can.
I prize thy love more than whole mines of gold."

Of course you can't either.

Most of college is just a hurdle. The degree simply says that you are motivated enough and have enough work ethic to get through all the bull shit.

I used to be the same way, My first 3 semesters in University I got usually between a 2.0-2.5. Since then I've gotten on deans list (3.5+) 3 of the last 4 semesters while narrowly missing one of the semesters, and it's not like the classes got much more interesting - something just clicked inside me and I felt the desire and motivation to succeed in school so that I could succeed after it.

It's a problem with your motivation, or lack thereof. The first step to getting better grades is admitting it's not the class being uninteresting (which it may be, but to no consequence), but you being lazy.

You should try reading some history by "radical historians" and you'll gain a whole new interest in the subject.

Gah, I had a similar school year this past year, but it's not as bad for me because I'm still in high school. I think we can all agree that a number given to you by a stranger isn't a very accurate way of measuring someone's intelligence, but it's not like you can do anything about it anyway, right? You're only real option is to just try your best to get by and it'll be over sooner than you think! Also, when you get your diploma you can always be like:
"gg no re n00bs!"

I disagree. This really varies with majors. In some you are actually doing real stuff that you will continue to use.

Also, outside of the US, this type of thinking is non-existent (and rightfully so, imo). You're supposed to be specializing, not going through some sort of trial by bullshit.

Compare a US undergraduate degree in science to one in the UK. The US will take four years, the UK 3 years. And that extra time is not paying off; half of it was spent on so called "general education". That leaves the UK guy with the advantage of finishing faster and even spending more time on his specialization. He's way ahead.

Or worse, compare with a Chinese university (the types seen 10 years ago but gone now). Their tuition was free, as was the dorm and food. So they could spend 4 years studying all day and only going back to the dorm to sleep! For years of specialized study in classes generally harder than those in America!
