If somebody can make this happen for me, it would make me the happiest guy on TL. All I want is a plug in for itunes that will look for songs that have the same song and album title and erase them, preferably keeping the one with the higher bit rate.
Anybody know of anything that could do this?

If you have a mac, go to File->Show Duplicates. Not sure if this is on windows too.
Admittedly, you'll have to manually sort through them to pick out the ones you want to delete, but it's better than nothing.
Or, sort your library by bitrate, and delete the ones with the low bitrate? |

The Show Duplicates button is useless, since I still have to manually click every song I want to delete, not to mention that it uses only song name as a criteria, so a song and its live version will show up with that.
The bitrate idea won't work because not everything I have duplicated is duplicated with different bitrates.
I have 24000 tracks. I really really don't feel like spending eight hours control clicking my way through itunes. |

Do you know specifically which albums you want to get rid of? or is it most of your library?
You could put the name of the album (or artist, etc.) into the search bar, and sort by bitrate. |

| you're getting too caught up on the bitrate. Maybe 10% or less of the duplicates I need to get rid of have disparate bitrates. |

| Hmm. Well, then, unless there's something different with it, like bitrate, filetype, or something like that, it'll be really difficult to do it easily and quickly. unfortunately, iTunes can't automatically erase duplicates afaik, so i think you're stuck unless there's something you can use to differentiate what you want from a duplicate. |

Why do you have so many duplicates? o.o I usually only have duplicates if I need to convert the song to a different filetype so that a friend can play it, so if you're the same, you can just sort your songs by filetype |

It's a pretty common problem. To find exact duplicates, I use double killer
http://www.bigbangenterprises.de/en/doublekiller/
you can just set it to delete exact duplicates in your music directory.
That should only leave you with songs that are not exactly duplicate. Hunting those down is almost impossible. If they have the same name, you can view duplicate names in itunes. If they don't have the same name, you're kind of stuck. |
