Severe mental problem

Forum index > Blogs
  Eatme   Switzerland. June 27 2009 05:02. Posts 2829Profile Blog
A few days ago I got a cold+fever and that force me to abstain from physical activities that I really enjoy. So I'm climbing on the walls when I cant go out and train and luckily starcraft is a very nice substitute since it's competetive and all.
Unfortunately I just cant get my tumb out of my ass and play alone. Some weird mental block or something. If I manage to play alone I can just hit up 3games or so.
I have no trouble playing with friends but it's kinda anoying to depend on others to be able to play.

Anyone got any tips to get rid of this so I can massgame, would be nice to play ~50games this weekend or so and well, just be able to massgame in general.

I wouldn't consider this a "severe mental problem". You're just nervous. Just play ^^.

Kinda hard to jump in and just set goals when the goal I want is just to play a bunch of games.

It's great to play with friends. I think you misread something. Or maybe I misunderstood this. But I only play with friends.

What about all the anti-social people and people who prefer solitude?

I do this too. I play maybe one or two games on iCCup, but I greatly prefer to play friends. I'll play friend that crush me, but I don't even care. I'll play 10 games in a row if I have the time, but after I lose one game on iCCup, I'm done for the day. Sometimes, I'll win 2-3 in a row on iCCup and I'm still done.
It isn't a good post until it has been quoted.

Nah, I'm like this when I'm ok too. It's just that I can do other stuff like go out skiing or cycling to clear my mind. Now all I can do is bw and then I notice this alot more.

Personal record for mass gaming was when I still considered myself "active" in 2003 and was like 14games in a row.

First of all, it is no "severe" mental problem. It is actually not that uncommon, I know at least a handful of other people (including me) who rather play friends they have no chance of beating than competing with a newbie on ICC that has no real clue of what he is doing.

You obviously want to massgame in order to improve your game. You don't do it because you are afraid of losing. You have won and lost several times against your friends and are familiar with both situations and the emotional states you were in - If you beat your friend, you are happy because you know how good he is, if you lose to him you don't mind because you recall the times you won vs him.

When playing on ICC, there is no such previous knowledge, no excuse your ego could use to cover up for a potential loss. Your ego does not want to feel bad, so it does not want to loss. It wants to feel good, so it rather wants to play your D+ friend who always uses the same buildorder and plays you on the map you are most familiar with. Playing on ICC takes all of those little advantages away and makes you feel uncomfortable, because you don't have as much control over the situation you would have when playing your friends.

If you don't have a positive and realistic self-image of yourself and your opponent, your ego will make it even harder for you to play on ICC because it will interprete every detail in a negative way to prevent you from playing (because you might lose, and that would you make feel bad and you don't want to feel that way) - Oh no, this guy has a Korean flag, he has to be better than me, I bet he knows all maps perfectly, oh shit he is Protoss GREAT HE HAS THE GOOD POSITION TOO FUCK THIS SHIT 1A2A3A FUCKING NEWBIE RACE TERRAN IS SO HARD alt+qq. The competitive character of a ladder like ICC is further punishing your ego because everyone can see that you lost the game/some points (which, again, makes you feel bad).

In order to overcome those restrictions by your ego, you must change your intention. Right now it is "I want to feel good and win every game", which is impossible. Rather, try "I want to play five games in a row and I want to focus on my macro no matter the outcome of the actual game". If you want you can make a new account for that sole purpose. Jot down a line for every game on a piece of paper and allow yourself to feel good when you reached your goal, because you then have something substantial in your hand/in front of your eyes that constantly reminds you that you did reach your goal - and that you can do it again.

Get a more competitive attitude when playing on ICC - look at Ret, he is one of the top foreigners and he also loses from time to time. The difference is simply the time between alt+qq and alt+v (for copying C+ desti msg) - it takes Ret mere seconds to break the negative state he might be in after a loss, while other players seemingly savor the pleasure of it by dwelling on a defeat as long as possible, cursing the map/race/opponent/keyboard/whathaveyou. You have to learn to shrug it off when you really want to improve, because there will be a lot of situations like this. Everytime negative emotions rise after a loss, see it metaphorically as a brick you want to smash as quick as possible before it becomes too big and makes you write aggressive pms with no real foundations. But I digress.

Man up, start to love the fight. Become a samurai who lives for the battle and constantly seeks to improve himself by dueling much stronger opponents than him. Set your goal to give everything you have in every game, regardless of the outcome. If you can defeat your fear of losing, your ego, there is nothing left but time and dedication to stop you.

PS: Yes, I can't sleep.

HUGE GOOD POST

I think you might be on to something in parts and off on other stuff. The title was mostly a joke on that a problems that makes you play less starcraft has to be called severe.
The friends I do play against are not D+ and dont use the same build every game. We mostly play hunters for fun tho and well thats builds into an interesting point for the ego thing since it's mostly wins.
I dont play much iccup but I got the same problem with bnet and everything so I dont really know if it being a ladder has so much to do with it. I really like elo ladders and dont really care for the iccup system but thats beside the point too.
The main reason I want to massgame is not to improve but to get interesting experieces. I still remember games on west from 02-04 that for various reasons were really epic. Beating a player that was much better or losing a 1h really close TvT. Plus that massgaming is generally cool. Getting good is just a decent sideeffect.
Officially I dont care if I win or lose but maybe I do but dont really want to realise it. I have never BM:ed or got upset however so it might be hard to get a more competetive aproach since I more or less quit playing to get better in 2003.

Ohwell thx for an interesting post.

Well i had problems with motivation regarding playing starcraft for a while too, but then i decided i wanted to improve past the boredom, and now i find it easy to play for 3+ hours without getting bored because i've gotten good enough that the games are challenging and fun.
