Today. Today was a good day. I woke up late, about 6:30am. The sunshine streamed through the windows, taunting me with its joyfulness. A rainy day would have made my decision so much easier, but a sunny day forced me to consider, the car or the bicycle. I nearly wimped out, but by 6:45 I was on my one-speed gathering inertia for the ride to work.
One part of my hurried morning was that I left Axel Rose sitting on my desk at home. Without his licks accompanying my ride, I was left with the chatter of my mind to keep me company on the 10km ride. As it turned out, that was an important development of my day. During my ride my mind wandered to an old friend of mine, Mr. Pasivirta, who had been my friend more than 20 years ago. Upon arriving at work I looked his unique surname up on facebook, and low and behold, there he was, holding an adorable baby boy. A few minutes later I was sending him a message which was soon replied to. We will trade mails again soon.
Besides that, I taught my first two lessons, and had a successful time. I spent the rest of the morning on TL, and especially enjoyed the discussion in this thread: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=96967¤tpage=All
By reading the various arguments in the thread, I went and talked to a Japanese teacher of History who gave me some great insight into the historical teaching of youth in Japan. I really enjoyed listening to his concerns, and discovered another English speaker at my high school. Valuable stuff I think.
In discussions like that, you have to type out your opinion, which forces you to think about it. I am not sure I agree with everything I wrote, but it is a good starting point to any discussion.
After that, I managed to ride home without incident, although there were many police cars on the road. I saw two cars, a wagon, and two of the special white motorcycles the cops use to catch speeders on the sea side road I take. I was fine.
The day finished with a 5 hour dinner with my friend Mr. Rob Garrity at the local chicken and beer joint. I helped him input his grades into his spreadsheet, as data entry is a strong point for me (thank you starcraft). He paid for our meal which ran almost $200, and we had a great talk about all subjects under the sun. Someday soon, diary, I will tell you about the important influence Mr. Garrity has had on my life.
Now I am pleasantly drunk and reading TeamLiquid. I imagine that I will finish my beer and watch a couple replays before bed.
Today was a good day.Last edit: 2009-07-10 12:41:57

Axel Rose?
Nice blog, you should update it more often.
Quick question, is it expensive to fly from Korea to Japan? |

| When you say chicken, do you mean wings? Are Japanese chicken wings anywhere near as good as their NA cousins? |

I dunno. The yen is stronger than the wan right now, so take your pick of currency. I flew for free last time on air miles so I am not actually sure of the prices, but it is 90 minutes. Maybe 200 usd round trip? |

Yakitori I suspect? Pictures next time Mani, like the comprehensive guide we got about killing bugs with electric water boilers!
Wait, is that $200 bill racked up by two at one of those after-work beer joints?
Also, Mani, what is your school like? From the way you described it in other threads, it seems like there are a good amount of interaction with the international community, what with study-abroad students and letter exchanges. Is it just another public school, or is it one of those specialized hs/college entering schools?
Lastly, what do you teach?

I can't imagine teaching in Japan to be fun Kona, though I'd kind of like to be paid in yen and have access to Japanese credit cards right now Besides, he is hours away from Akiba on even the shinkansen, you'd die!Last edit: 2009-07-06 23:16:08 |

| And how on Earth did you get through that whole thread about the Japanese people. The intelligent poster:idiots in there isn't very high. In principle it is cool, cuz all countries do their own tinkering with history (see the book someone mentioned in the July 4th thread) |

I'd still love to be a teacher, especially in Korea or Japan. Oh, what I wouldn't pay T____T |

Yes, it was definately yakitori (chicken on a stick). Had it been yakiniku (bbq meat) it would have been a lot more. 23 beers between the two of us made up a big chunk of that bill... no I am drinking at home talking to you folks
I teach at a regular, public, Japanese high school. There is an "international" program at my school, but it is as international as I choose to make it. It is basically up to my own energy.
I like teaching at my school very much. I feel like I was born to teach, unlike many of the foreigners in Japan who do it simply because they have no other choice. So, I feel lucky to be where I am. Another reason I like my job is that I have students, not customers. Many foreigners teach customers at language "schools" rather than read kids. This extends to the university system as well where kids are pampered.
I hope I can continue teaching where I am for a long time. The money isnt fantastixc, but the job satisfaction is. I can answer anything else you have.
Mani. |

I came on the JET programme, which importand foreigner people to teach at public schools. After teaching for a year I decided to take a masters in TESOL and improve my skills. Hopefully I can find a better job now that I am finished.
I spoke 0 Japanese before I came, and I speak very very little now. I cannot hold a conversation unless I know what the subject is already. I need to study more, but I dont, which is my biggest frustration (of myself, and of the society in general).
Try to apply for the JET programme, it is the best ride in Japan. |

Well, if it is one of those government sponsored programs, you hardly need to speak any Japanese. I've had friends in college with one year's worth of University level Japanese getting into the English teaching program. At that, there are people who can barely hold an elementary conversation who got through the program. I don't know how much of that is a sign of universities' connections though. My professor said I'd be fine even though my grandma jokes all the time about how stiff I speak every time I try to speak to her in Japanese.
Working for a private company though is probably much harder, ask Haji
EDIT - Yeah, JET.Last edit: 2009-07-06 23:51:09 |

You need to have a university degree before getting on JET, not one year's experience.
Language is not a requirement, it does not really matter in terms of the goal of the program. In fact, it can actually be a deter ant to your application, as I had a friend be denied from the JET program because he spoke Japanese and had lived here soon before his application.
