iCCup Blog: I Improved My PvZ!

So probably a month or so ago I started practicing PvZ on iCCup and it was the only matchup I played. While my other matchups (PvP and PvT) were both had solid D ranks, my PvZ was definitely D-. Once in a while I would win a couple games and get back to D, only to be shot down once again to D-. Out of frustration I stopped practicing the matchup and even started dodging it while I spent time trying to learn how protoss is supposed to win against zerg.

This past week I was forced to practice PvZ because I am playing a zerg player (mannerMan) in the Liquid Kickball League. Its nice to say that this time I had good results!

I really think the only reason that I have been able to get to D+ with my PvZ is because I have become more familiar with zerg build orders and, most importantly, I've started scouting a lot more. When it comes to zerg cheesing, PvZ is a very reactionary matchup. Questions such as, where do I place my cannons? and do I form my two first HT? all depend on what the zerg is doing. What sucks though is if zerg is good at denying scouting, you have to prepare for everything and you usually dont have the resources to do that. For me the hardest thing to distinguish is whether my opponent is goind two hatch hydra or two hatch muta if they have defined scounting. I get into a position where I know that zerg is cheesing, but I dont know which one to defend against. Having one storm instead of an archon makes such a big difference when defending 2 hatch hydra its really annoying to have to commit to one defense or the other.

Question

I didn't really feel like this question is really necessary to be in the strategy forum so I'm putting it here. So how do I distinguish a two hatch muta build from a two hatch hydra build? I have a replay here (sorry its mediafire, I have no clue where to upload it since RepDepot is down) where my opponent blocked his chock with drones so that my probe could not get in. So, I knew he was doing a cheese build but I didn't know if it was two hatch muta or two hatch hydra. Should I have known that it was two hatch muta because he didn't have hydras already, or, because his zerglings did not have speed and get got that early gas?

Now most of my wins are vs z and I love the match up =D

If you didn't go for a corsair build, but a FE into temp archives just cannon up and tech to make a strong breakout.

Scout for his third, the moment he takes a third base run out and destroy everything, he will die starving. Key is to defend the rush.

If you went sair after expo just keep getting sairs and a couple of cannons, you can follow up with +1 air, or zealot archon.

If he puts both buildings up just stay with your sair seeing what hes pumping.

@your question, some general scouting advice from my experiences. Not exactly what you asked for, but it might help.

If you absolutely cant scout into the zergs base, scout for a third base. If there isnt a third base, and its 2 base vs 2 base, you will be ahead in the long run, so its safe to add cannons both at your front(hydra break/mass ling) and in your main (in cause of muta or lurker drops), without becoming behind. If the zerg is staying on 1 base, I just spam cannons all over the place, cause obviously if the protoss doesnt die, 2base toss>>>>>>1base zerg.

You should be able to scout into their base as soon as you get your cosair, and the timings work out so that if their doing 2 hatch muta, your sair will pop around they get into your base, vs a 3 hatch muta, your sair will get to their base vs the muta come out. In both instances, it will let you know that you need an archon, just make sure you morph it in a safe place. and vs a 3hatch ling/2 hatch hydra bust, it comes a bit to late to properly scout, but you will be able to see them on their way to your base if they haven't attacked yet, but in all cases, your able to decide weather to make an archon or not.

Other than that, if your unsure of what their doing, leave a probe at their choke, to see any units coming out, and to give you a little heads up. Try to scout the zergs second gas, to see if they are going for a gas heavy build (lurker/muta) or a light gas build (ling/hydra).

And gratz on D plus PvZ, always feels nice to improve, especially with that matchup IMO, its pretty hard to figure everything out at first as the toss.
