Legendary banana caster Sayle and Broodwar streamer extraordinaire KasPra have joined forces to bring you a new show:
The Chronicles of KasPra: An Introduction to Broodwar
This will be a newbie-friendly show with the goal of helping out D (and lower!) level players and showing that the BW community is not just a bunch of elitist jerks! We will be following the progress of KasPra, our D+ terran hero, as he takes on the ISL ladder. Once a week, KasPra will join me on my stream to show some of his ladder replays, and I will give him pointers while also talking a lot about the fundamentals of playing Broodwar. I will also be inviting various top-level mega gosu players onto the show to provide some of their insight.
Whether you're a D newbie looking for some help besides "MACRO MOAR" or an SC2 player who has recently taken up BW and is not sure where to start, this is the show for you!
When: Thursday, Feb 24 8:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00)
Where: www.justin.tv/saylesc
Also check out KasPra's stream here: http://www.livestream.com/practiceterran
Episode 1 VOD: blip.tv link: http://www.blip.tv/file/4781016 Youtube: + Show Spoiler +
Episode 2 VOD: blip.tv link: http://www.blip.tv/file/4816811 Youtube: + Show Spoiler +
Episode 2.5 VOD: Youtube: + Show Spoiler +
Episode 3 VOD: Youtube: + Show Spoiler +
Episode 5 VOD: Youtube: + Show Spoiler +
Episode 6 VOD: Youtube: + Show Spoiler +
Some clarifications: + Show Spoiler +- I will be focusing on the fundamentals of Broodwar so it doesn't really matter if you're terran or not (although all of our replays will be a terran matchup). - ISL ladder will only last another two weeks or so, so when that finishes we will just look at KasPra's 'normal' ladder games. - I am not a mega gosu. I'm a C level protoss, but this should be fine for our target audience

This is very sexy and KasPra is awesome as hell.
EDIT: This is exactly what BW might need at this moment. Starting Brood War is difficult, and if you see the difficulties of the others, that might encourage more people to do it.
|
Really cool

Very nice initiative! I'll make sure to tune in!

Excellent idea!!! Sounds like a lot of fun too.

I thought this was going to be a show about how KasPra makes kick ass banners.
This is cool too.

Some D / D+ newb who regularly streams some lovely BW replays and games of him laddering on Iccup. He also talks (in his poor english) during live sessions, making his stream almost tolerable to watch.

Indeed, the inspiration for this project came from all of the threads popping up about SC2 players switching to BW. If you have any friends like this or you see another thread about it in the future, please send them here!

awesome, i have just spent a bit of time getting stomped on iccup, this is exactly what I need. Perhaps i can do some TvT on the stream against KasPra

This is an awesome idea!
I do wish it was more often than once a week. At least twice! Also, please keep the OP updated with VODs after every show ^^
|
I'm definitely watching and admittedly a noob.
|
As an SC2 player who's interested in playing some BW, i'm very excited for this :D
I've watched your stream in the past and really enjoyed it so this should be great.
|
I love the similarity of KasPra's name to KeSPA When I first saw the title, I thought KasPra was a spin on KeSPA...is it? o.o
|
Use the time function for BBCode, so it's easier to convert!
Like this: 20:00 GMT (+00:00)
|
Ahhhh yes bring BW to the masses this is an awesome idea
|
sounds good since so many people on D ladder and such are clear stats.

i think its important to look at games where you lose convincingly. They'll have the most oportunity to show your weaknesses than a close game, tho a long game would be good to look at overall decision making as well. dont pick my game if you dont want to just wanted to take a jab hehehe

I love this idea, I've got a few friends who've been looking for a show like this!
Thanks and gl Kaspra on your journey!

Its good to know that Starcraft:Broodwar is still alive. ^^ I would really like to watch this show and excited of what I can learn from it ^^ GO KASPRA!!!
|
Awesome idea. I look forward to checking it out (if I'm on in time)
Btw, correct me if I'm wrong but your OP should say "a SC2 player" instead of "an SC2 player" since starcraft doesn't start with a vowel. :D

I demand more screams of PLAYGUUUUU
Also, someone should do that Flash Double Armory vs Protoss build!
Thanks for doing this! Sayle and KasPra are awesome~

Very nice idea, i hope i will make it for few shows. KasPra is awesome and fun to watch, especially when cursing. Hope the show gets many viewers and all guys that call bw players elitists come over to watch.

Really looking forward to this. I expect to see some Deep Six against P and Mech against Z thank you very much

This is a great idea, but might I recommend you have 3 main "heroes" that receive this on-air training? One of each race might be better than showing only one side of 3 of the MUs. That way also every race has their hero they can kinda follow

I hadn't thought of putting VODs in the OP, but that makes sense so will do!

As far as I know it's not, but thanks for pointing that out. I'll be sure to make jokes about this during the show and pretend it was my idea :D

Well, if you say it out loud, you pronounce 'S' as 'ess' so I think 'an' is better? I guess I can make a poll about it and let the viewers decide who's right

I've talked about the race issue with KasPra and a few other people already and it's hard to find a good solution. Your idea is cool, but would that mean doing the show 3 days a week, one day per hero? Not sure if I have that kind of time :p
An idea just occurred to me though. Since I'll be inviting guests from the other races, maybe I can announce them beforehand and get some viewer-submitted replays as well. Will keep this idea in mind and let you guys know on the show and in the OP if we decide to go with this.

Will be catching our stream sometime soon!! : ) Nice to see people supporting the BW scene and more beginner friendly : D

excited for this. you almost do motivate me to play bw with this, hehehe. i've always wanted to be T too, but i'm just suck so i play P xD

Hey Sayle, you could maybe find other enthusiastic BW A/B-rankers to stream once a week with their own student. It seems like there are lots of good players still active in the community, but don't stream much any more for whatever reason. This may be incentive to start up again.

It's not 100% a mentor-student streaming session, it's a show where we mostly discuss about things and watch replays and stuff. It's more about the viewers than it's about me. I'm not some random dude, i'm the sidekick and a co-host.
Or at least uh... i like to think that i am one. o_o'
Oh and by the way, i mostly play the 100% korean standard BW and mostly practice just 1 match-up, 1 build, 1 map per time for weeks because it's a ridiculously fast way to get better at the game and that is what i am aiming for So you wont be seeing goliath timing attacks vs zerg and observer blinding vs protoss.

Well you wouldn't necessarily have to do it three times a week, you just make the feature twice as long (maybe 2 hours instead of 1) and you just have all three heroes there as if its a small class. You have a large network of gosus able to offer feedback and virtual lessons and it'd be nice to see the concepts gradually applied until said students are no longer Ds but rather solidly high Cs to Bs. They "graduate", become "alumni", and are then available to join their teachers rather than being the students for next time.
This might actually give some of the lower ranks hope that "look, it CAN be done. You CAN ascend beyond red and yellow ranks", as many regard it as impossible on a level such as iCCup without going through basically progamer-level training. You could use these "example players" as a way of showing it can be done on a fairly casual level and that might bring people back into iCCup itself. I dunno about you, but I'm tired of seeing 400 for "Players online" whenever EU is mostly offline.
|
This looks great! Going to check this out tonight and get some BWAI going aain. Feels like forever since I played BW a lot. Don't think I'll take it to ICCup just yet though.
Keep up the good work!

I watched for a few minutes. I hope you don't mind me commenting on this, but I think you guys are not really giving him good advice. He didn't lose 18 marines to 12 ultralisks and a bunch of lings because he didn't have enough medics... Honestly his medic proportions didn't have anything really wrong. He lost because:
1: it's a huge ultra ling army and his army is tiny 2: His army was totally out of position.. It got caught in a big line ripe for Zerg to get a high aggregate of attack 3: He didn't have vessels or really anything but an early game looking m'm army (ok, you mention vessels a little later, but you need to go further than that).
Okay, so the number 1 point is obviously his macro... But you can't just tell someone 'having 2000 minerals in the bank is bad' ... He knows that. He needs to know how he can fix that. You didn't comment on how his building positioning was not allowing him to macro properly, you didn't really tell him how his map control was frantic and taking up too much of his attention...
I dunno! Maybe it is the pressure of trying to think of things to say on the spot, or maybe it is just not really having the insight, but you should work on this.

You only watched the show for a few minutes and you seem to not really understand what it's about. Let me explain. This is NOT a coaching session for KasPra. We are simply using his replays to help guide a discussion on how newbies can improve. What we talk about at any given time may not even have anything to do with what's going on in the game. Obviously 18 marines don't stand up to 12 ultralisks with medics or not. There were a million things we could point out in that game, but that's not what we're trying to do. In fact, that's what we're trying to avoid. We're purposely dumbing things down so that beginners don't get overwhelmed. I will be updating OP with links to more detailed discussions by Day9 and others for people who are interested.
Your point about explaining how to macro rather than just saying "keep your money low" is good though. Will mention this in the next episode.

Update:
Unfortunately, KasPra's computer is broken so he won't be able to provide us with ladder replays for this week. However, the show WILL go on. KasPra will join me on the show from a laptop, and we will be asking you, the viewers, to submit replays for us to analyze. Here's how it works:
The theme for episode 2 will be stopping rushes. So, we are looking for replays where you play a standard macro build and your opponent rushes you. I will be picking replays with the most common 'standard' rushes such as proxy gates, BBS, etc, since I think it would be less useful to analyze something crazy like a drone rush (hi Jaedong). Please submit your replays by uploading them to repdepot.net and PM'ing me the link either here on TL or on iccup.com to rD.Sayle.
Also, after the feedback we got from the first episode, I've decided to make the show a little less structured/formal, with more time spent watching replays rather than just talking. Hopefully this is more interesting for you guys!

Guess its time to get on a D account and proxy gate people to start generating the replays ^_^

i really like the idea of the next episode
i think most of us noobs try to go for a macro build to a mid game timing push but early pressure really fucks shit up.

are the replays, people?

well as already said, i'm gonna check my reps when i'm at home.
meanwhile everyone else should check theirs! no show without good reps!
pumped for the episode
edit: you should make something like this for ingame overlay :O

I'd rather have it cover the progress bar.

Aw man I didn't see the update regarding replays until now. Do they have to be Terran replays? (i.e. Terran as defender)
edit: dang, missed the live cast. This is pretty entertaining though - hopefully I'll be better about figuring out timezones in the future.

no, it can be any race, any matchup

Both episodes were fun, in their own way. VOD's are appreciated. Is there some sort of issue between Sayle and TL? (I'm pretty new around here)
|
What Issue? oO
BTW, the episode 2 can already be watched in the ustream channel under recorded videos =]

We have an ancient blood feud that is almost as old as Artosis!
Actually no, I love TL. Yesterday I was just talking about how I'd made an embarassingly stupid thread here that (thankfully) got closed by Mani. I assume that's what made you think that?

cant wait to see em on utube :D

Both episodes are now available on Youtube!
OP is updated with links.
Also, I'm much happier with how episode 2 went, so expect to see a similar format (i.e. little to no format) in the future
|
I didn't like how 60-70% of episode 2 was just about PvP. You guys went over PvZ wall-in, Kaspra complained that there was no T, nOone said the rest of the episode is for Terran, then you guys just went over PvPs... I guess it makes up for not having P in episode 1. And you guys need to give Kaspra more speaking time. (man I feel like a high school teacher grading a presentation )
I loved how you guys are taking replays from the audience though. There are plenty of entertaining games in low level.(mostly because there is so much fail from both sides)
Looking forward to Episode 3.

aff i can't find the part in questions where i asked what builds they told to practice as P for each MU^^ actually i tought it was after the last game but show ends after the kidcanada game maybe i remember wrong lol^^
edit: anyone remembers what builds noone adviced?^^ i tried to listen all the questions again but i keep losing focus due to work xD

thanks for uploading to utube! My roomates, friends and I (8people) learned alot from you guys!! Keep it up!!

Update: Episode 3 postponed to March 10.
Unfortunately, I'm a bit sick at the moment so we'll be postponing this week's episode. Things should be back to normal by next week though.
Also, thanks to everyone who has left feedback on the show. Since this is my first time doing something like this, it really helps to get constructive criticism. And on that note, please do suggest topics you'd like us to cover in future episodes.
Edit: Also, I think KasPra's computer is still broken anyway o_o
|
Thats too bad. You deserve sometime off though. You do so much.
|
Get a webcam Sayle! :D sometimes I felt i was listening to a radio.. =\

ewww, what am i gonna do tomorrow evening now? :D

MEGA Update:
As a replacement for today's episode, I will be streaming games of me playing live against ICCup.nOoNe, who will then analyze the replays on stream. No talking from me, just playing. Enjoy!
|
Still KasPra's computer? Too bad.

I think his computer is still broken, but we're going ahead with the show today anyway. Gonna be analyzing some D+/C- level reps from KasPra's friend

I liked your sick voice on episode 2.5 sayle... xD

So next thursday will be a normal show?

Sorry, but we have to postpone this week's episode as well. I'm busy tomorrow and nOoNe is sick as well, so the next episode of the show will be on March 24.
On the up side, there will be another episode of ICCup Attack! that's currently scheduled for this Friday. Stay tuned for an official announcement.
|
so bad to hear that... ;/
till next thursday then, and fast recovery for nOoNe !! :D
|
I just watched all the episodes. They were fun. I hope you can show some more Kaspra next time. It was fun when you analyzed his games.

Episode 4 tonight!
KasPra's been busy with school and hasn't had much time to play, so today we'll be looking at some high level replays provided by nOoNe!
I'm considering putting the show on hold after this episode considering KasPra's busy with school and nOoNe and I are busy with ISL. Will make a proper announcement during the show.
|
Aww sad to see that KasPra's schedule will affect the show. Both you and nOoNe are doing a great job, I really enjoyed watching the episodes and learning all the little bits and pieces. But no pressure KasPra, school is more important .
Oh and does episode 3 end abruptly? Or is it meant to end that way so nOoNe can continue 5 pooling haha :X

Who is the zerg player? I am learning so much from his insights.

I was dual-streaming it on Ustream so you could have watched it there :<
|
LOL. Episode 4 made me realize what a sausage fest SC is.
Anyway, since Kaspra is busy you can always find a random TL noob and look at his reps. Or maybe you can just ask us to send in reps during the stream, and then you can analyze a few of them. I'm sure most ppl have replays where they don't get how they lost. Well, that's just a suggestion.
Thanks for keeping the BW community alive, guys!
|
Well if Kaspra is so busy, I may continue to show up on the show to be the "noob" or at least for some extra entertainment. If you guys would like to submit replays though for us to look at I am sure we can work on that! Feel free to email me replays and I will pass them along to Sayle and nOoNe. My email is: iccuptesla@gmail.com ^^ Thanks for watching the last episode guys.

And with Tesla as our stand-in newbie, the show will go on! I know I said we'd put it on hold in the last episode, but I lied! Next episode is this Thursday at 21:00 CET as always. It'll be me, nOoNe, Tesla, and KasPra if I can get him ^^
No set theme/plan for this episode yet, but I believe Tesla has some replays from a friend along with some questions he had, so that's a good start.
Edit: and yes, I know the episode 4 VOD isn't up yet. I've been busy with ISL and other stuff, but I'll get it up ASAP.
|
So no episode tonight? Stream seems to have it in schedule but offline.

Sorry, nOoNe got called in to work at the last minute and KasPra/Game/Tesla were all either busy or afk. To make up for it though, I'm going to be casting an ISL Ro16 match early in about 10 minutes. This will be followed by the Kolll vs Mamon Ro32 match that was casted by Elegant already, but since the VODs are taking some time I will re-cast it.

Episode 7 goes live in about 2.5 hours! Today we have a special guest newbie on the show: L_Master!
I've also uploaded the episode 5 and 6 VODs. I didn't notice that episode 4 wasn't uploaded yet and to be honest, I'm not 100% sure where ep 4 is saved. I'll do some poking around before today's show. Also, I may do some fiddling with my streaming settings today to try and get a higher quality ISL cast, so do let me know if it's more or less laggy than usual.

I'll try to get a mic before next week (and some more solid games) so that you don't have to deal with the lovely mosquito noise.

June 1 update!
The show is returning! Tomorrow we will have a 2 hour special hosted by myself and LRM)nOoNe. We'll be starting at 21 CET as before.
If you'd like your games analysed on the show, please send a PM to DeuS here on TL with a link the replay and short description. No PvTs or TvTs though please
|
So this means that KasPra is actually alive? I mean, he is, at least he comes on MSN but he doesn't even talk or ask for games.
|
^^ Yay! I'll watch previous episode I missed
|
I remember watching these a year and a half ago and I was bored so I wanted to check on this series to listen to the old sayle a bit, but apparently the VODs have been made private. I remember that it helped a bit when I started BW and was D- and it's a shame that they are unavailable does anybody know why?
I am basically necroing this to ask why the vods are private.
|
Have you tried the blip links? Those still work. But yeah, weird that the youtube vids are private.
Edit: Actually upon further inspection (I watched one and got in the mood to watch em all) only the first episode seems to work for me, episode 2's blip won't load for me and the rest don't seem to be on blip at all.
|
Lol, seeing this thread brings back a lot of memories. I will ask Sayle if he still has the recordings.
|
I wish this is still on

Just curious what rank are you now?

I haven't really played any video games in general for a few years due to work and school. Just a bit of brood war lately and league about a year back so I'm probably like D- x(
