+ Show Spoiler +The details are really fuzzy right now, but if I'm correct, a guy who goes by the username "잡담" on "스갤"(an anonymous Korean BW forum, which is part of the site DC) may be sued. The KT Coach LJH was notified by KT fans tweeting him about a guy who consistently posted malicious comments about Flash. A twitter conversation ensued between 잡담 and LJH. Either I haven't discovered the function yet or twitter is retarded, so I can't see the conversation as it folded but just see the two sides tweeting. http://twitter.com/#!/roqytm <-잡담 http://twitter.com/#!/KTRolster <- LJH (April 24th) LJH + Show Spoiler +@roqytm 멘션온건 진작에 봤는데.. I saw the mention earlier.. Looking at what you've written up to now... starting from unspeakable words... You went too far. I don't get what crime Flash and the other progamers have committed towards you to cause you to act like this. I felt that the malicious comments were severe these days, but I didn't know it was this bad. I acknowledge that a part of the comments on 스갤 and Fomos are for fun, but this is just focusing on and attacking Flash. This is an clear act of defamation towards the KT sports team and Flash. As you can see from my twitter ID, I'm using it as an unofficial team twitter, and our sports team is also monitoring it. I almost weakened when you started mentioning your parents. I'm close with Flash's mother. She also checks a lot of online communities. Do you think she didn't see what you wrote? Do you only worry about what your parents think and not what other parents' think? This isn't a laughing matter and it's beyond my hands. I've passed on the material that the fans have given me to the KT front and will concentrate on the SKT match. And 잡담: (not translating all of it, but just the general gist) - is a Bisu fan - posted saying that Bisu might be better than Flash and got flamed for it by Flash fans -> caused him to start insulting Flash as payback - never insulted him elsewhere - didn't mean for Flash or anyone else related to see it - says that the guy who reported him is being two-faced since he also has insulted Bisu (notably PSing Bisu with a picture of a monkey with an enlarged nose) - only insulted Flash because of all the Flash-haters - begs not to tell his parents who will be disappointed by him again - says that he'll take the punishment, and learn from the experience - but then the next day, begs to be let off Ugh.. it's basically =_= really ... 비굴해.. the way the guy's begging. According to rumors, KT wants to sue, but Flash is against it. Supposedly he said that although he was hurt by the comments, 잡담 is still a fan of esports and should be let off. Not sure about this. (There's already a webcomic about the situation. I'm sure someone else *coughstartswithanmcough* will translate it because I have my last exam tomorrow and really should be studying.)+ Show Spoiler +On April 26 2011 06:39 nitdkim wrote:I hope this does it 80% justice... I don't really know how bad the comments were, but considering that 스갤 is normally a really bad-mannered place(the average post on it is probably worse than any post that's been posted on TL, including the banned ones), it's got to be pretty bad for him to be singled out. I haven't found the posts, and I think the original posts were all erased. Heard that it had to do with attacking his personality, appearance, and parents. Although I'm not sure if KT will actually follow through, especially since Flash apparently wants to let him off, I know that people have been sued before on DC. -edit- looked up a few previous cases, and apparently on 스갤, - a guy in 2005 was about to sued for pretending to be other users and flaming players, but he committed suicide before the suit (the suing occurred after the suicide, not before. the owner of DC sued him only to find out that he was already dead) - a guy posted that he was going to kidnap, rape and kill [B_Blade]Leader's daughter(probably not for real, but just to state how much he hated him), he read it, obviously got pissed off, and took legal action

Typical dumb Bisu fan. Same shit on TL.
Waste of time and resources on the judicial system to try 1 kid. Though, if they do sue him it'll dissuade others from posting negative comments. So uh...go for it.

Nope. LJH actually said in an article that he and the team reads the comics. The big-nosed monkey thing has gone on for a long time.

Nothing on TL compares with how bad 스갤 can be. Seriously, it's a lot nicer here.

LJH has exploded on twitter before. Great job by Flash to realize this is no big deal - without seeing the actual content of the posts, if the forum is so bad, it could use moderators, not people suing fans.

Must be some pretty serious comments for it to be considered sue-worthy! Flash wanting to let him off is very respectable, but it would really tell us more if we knew the severity of the comments.

Lolol, a bisu fan, "who would have thought". :DDDD That's bad to forget that players are humans too and while you can jokingly say that someone sucks, you really shouldn't go too serious on this.

They shouldn't sue him. He is wrong about Bisu being better than Flash though.

Holy shit. Just holy shit. That is so far over the line that it's unimaginable for me that a true fan of e-Sports could say such a thing.
I know that in any crowd there are bad apples, but the Korean ones seem to be on an entirely different level. I always felt that Korean society encouraged more mild, passive behavior, but I guess when they think they can hide behind the anonymity of the internet...

Wha? Of course the U.S. has libel laws. I took an entire class on it in college. The problem is that here Flash would be considered a public figure. And public figures have to prove what's called 'actual malice.' It's very difficult to legally prove that, although in this case, it seems more like harassment than libel.

DC Inside is roughly the equal of Korea's 4chan, even though there are some very mature users on there as well. They often partake in things that no other country or culture would understand, such as waging war against other Korean websites (one called Humoruniv comes to mind) or trying to DDOS Japan's 2chan every March 1st, which is a national day in Korea that commemorates Korea's freedom movement against Japan under Japanese imperialist rule in the early 20th century. There have been countless cases of members on the site doing unimaginable things or being sued. I remember one incident where one user cut up the body of a cat, took a picture and put it online, then gave the rest of the users a puzzle to solve, saying that if they could solve it, he would spare another cat's life. Turns out he killed the cats after all.

"Culture Clash - ground for lawsuit. Please - accept the mystery"
My guess is progamers spend a lot of time online and it's not easy for them to read through all the hate that some people have against them. Better moderating is the key to keep certain people from the sites. Then again, the SC2 forums prove how hard it can be.

wow what a childish move by KT. Even if the talk got out of hand, its the forum mod's duty to take some measures, besides if someone posts it on the internets it has to be true right? omg this is so much bs, KT must better focus on sucking less in PL and not to protect their all so beloved flash from random dudes posting stuff about him.

Why cant we all just be friends
Happy to see coach defending the players though it seems exxagerated.
|
It must have been very serious threats posted to evoke those emotions. I agree you shouldn't sue people over just some childish fanboyism, but if that guy was seriously threatening Flash and his family, then he needs to be checked. There are some crazy people out there... sometimes these people need a good scare to show others you can't be a fucking idiot (for example stating you are going to rape someone's daughter or sister). Either they get scared as hell and never do it again, or if they really were crazy enough to do what they say, maybe they deserve to get sued.
Anyhow, it must be REALLY bad since there is a lot of high level BM there already.

wouldn't it be better if all the teams gathered and forced to close/regulate the entire site? From OP it seems no good can come up from it anyway..

I believe this is the very definition of frivolous lawsuit.

Sounds like a giant publicity stunt.

Wow flash is such a baller, always wanting the best for the good of esports.
But yeah, KT coach is such a jerk sometimes... with the suing.. and disgusting comments on Savior.

I don't know how to feel about this. It's so common that it's seems strange to take people at random and try to punish them, but at the same time I'd really like it to be less common People on the internet can be very cruel. In this case in involves money... It would hurt the team if bad rumours were spread about their star player. It's basically cyber-bullying someone you've never met.

On the plus side, it's pretty awesome how passionate people are about this game to this day. This is the silver lining that Flash is seeing, I imagine.
|
I hope this does it 80% justice...

Certainly it's a bad thing to say stuff about players that's law-suit worthy (jeez, I wonder what he said to make it law-suit worthy...o_O) but if he really means no harm, then I don't see a reason for a law-suit. Sure whatever he said must have been really hurtful (and honestly, I would like it if there were less of that in this world), but getting into a lawsuit over it seems a bit like over-reacting to me, given the situation. Though I have to admit, as a Bisu fanboy, this behavior from another fanboy disappoints me. =\

We are truly spoiled by TL (at least in the bw side of the site). The sad truth is that the vast majority of the internet is exactly as you described. If battle.net had LR threads for proleague I'd wager you would see the same type of comments as the one in your spoiler.

While we TLers do throw some hate around regarding fanboyism, we generally keep it purely related to the player's records, and not lavish insults on the player's appearances and what not... or at least as I'd like to think. But I guess this is as good of a sign as any that people should keep it "professional" and stick to facts, and not mudslinging. I hope this isn't blown out of proportion.
|
Korean internet community, besides few private well-regulated websites, are utter garbage. You know there is problem when people start debating "open name" policy to remove animosity seriously in SK.
Edit: On more related note to thread, can't really see how one could make judgment without this whole thing unless someone manage to uncover this guy's posts.
|
The Korean Netizens are us in 10 years. Unless the amazing mods of TL continue to hero it up, that is.
|
Oh bother
|
I don't see what the problem is to be honest.
Maybe it's a cultural thing but I don't think anyone could say anything to my face that would warrant me to file a lawsuit, let alone something they said over the internet. People in korean esports should expect these kinds of things to be said frequently, otherwise they are simply unproffesional.
Again, maybe it's a cultural thing, but Flash doesn't seem phased by it which makes me wonder...
|
Maybe KT is overreacting, but Flash did mention in his interview after the MSL group D match that he had been struggling with some personal issues which had made it very hard to practice...
I would assume after reading this thread that this is what Flash was referring to by 'personal issues'.
If what was said in that forum is affecting Flash and he is unable to perform at his best or practice properly I can fully understand why KT would want to take action...
But again, this is just my opinion and I might be wrong, go read the interview and see what you think...
I just hope this all gets properly resolved for the sake of Flash, KT and E-sports

And 잡담: (not translating all of it, but just the general gist) - is a Bisu fan - posted saying that Bisu might be better than Flash and got flamed for it by Flash fans -> caused him to start insulting Flash as payback - never insulted him elsewhere - didn't mean for Flash or anyone else related to see it - says that the guy who reported him is being two-faced since he also has insulted Bisu (notably PSing Bisu with a picture of a monkey with an enlarged nose) - only insulted Flash because of all the Flash-haters - begs not to tell his parents who will be disappointed by him again - says that he'll take the punishment, and learn from the experience- but then the next day, begs to be let off Ugh.. it's basically =_= really ... 비굴해.. the way the guy's begging. According to rumors, KT wants to sue, but Flash is against it. Supposedly he said that although he was hurt by the comments, 잡담 is still a fan of esports and should be let off. Not sure about this. (There's already a webcomic about the situation. I'm sure someone else *coughstartswithanmcough* will translate it because I have my last exam tomorrow and really should be studying.) + Show Spoiler +It's better with the sound effects, but eh. Look it up elsewhere to hear the original BGM I don't really know how bad the comments were, but considering that 스갤 is normally a really bad-mannered place(the average post on it is probably worse than any post that's been posted on TL, including the banned ones), it's got to be pretty bad for him to be singled out.

I'm glad they decided to let him off, especially if he was just a dumb kid who went too far.
Flash is classy as usual.
Didn't Flash get Korean anti-fans saying bad things about his parents a year or two ago, too? That kind of stuff really pisses me off, attacking the player is one thing but attacking their family is something only trash would do.

if you had the Power to fuck up someone who dissed you or your friends online, then you would be totally more inclined to use it.
99.999% of internet people dont have the power to get their Company and sue someone who trash talks them. so instead we just realise its some random lolfag we dont even know, and move on. we come to terms with things psychologically and with reason, rather than throwing money and power and ragefits at them
so you should ask yourself is it right to fuck up someone physically (sueing them, national newspaper, parents and school involved etc) for dissing you indirectly (they're mindlessly talking to their keyboard or a lolfag community and not straight to you or your email inbox) and annonymously in a casual troll/student-owned forum?
no its not fucking right so people shouldnt be given that power.
anyone who is shocked by "rudeness" and obnoxious or impolite behaviour should try spending some time in a normal community rather than one that bans 10,000s of members every year. go live in some unmoderated communities and games where someone saying they're going to rape your sister is normal and lighthearted fun/expression. go browse some guro communities but dont think you can call them out and get them arrested after you make the choice to step into their world

Dude when you say "normal community" I don't think of communities where it's okay to say you're going to rape anyone. Team Liquid is closer to a normal community in this respect because it's closer to normal, sane standards of human interaction. The thing is if there's no accountability and most people don't ban 10,000s of people every month or year or whatever the entire internet is automatically a shithole that will get continuously worse. It isn't an acceptable state of affairs for people to go around talking about raping people's sisters or daughters. Words like that have to indicate something because they're important for determining intent in committing in action which they can still do on an internet forum even if other people say it jokingly.
I think sueing is a majorly ineffective and inefficient way to deal with it but you have to do something to establish that there's a line to draw in human interaction.

Some of the 4chan message boards can be an example of this, though perhaps not the /b because of having young sample of users to begin with.

Actually it may be, obnoxious behavior, impoliteness and rudeness aside, if someone posts defamatory lies or threats it can be illegal depending on your country of residence. If the LAW allows it and you deem it necessary I say it should be used in this manner. After all that is why it is there.
Of course people will have different standards for what is deemed acceptable but there has to be a limit about what you can do or say. Even if its on the internet.

You can say "I'm going to rape your sister" to perhaps your friend as a "normal and lighthearted fun/expression", but not on the Internet. Encouraging people to throw away their accountability is the last thing we should be doing, and this is doubly true in Korea, which has the worst netizen interaction in the world. Does this count?
No. Thats not normal human behaviour the same way extremists that blow themselves up arent normal.
Also that picture isnt trolling. They genuinely believe what they are doing is correct cos they are so twisted. People that troll know what they are doing isnt normal human interaction. If they werent aware that they shouldnt talk to other people that way then they probably have aspergers.

Has the slanderer changed his ways? I am glad Flash forgave him.

really curious abt what was said to trigger such a response @_@

Well, it's probably good that he got a wakeup call to stop being a tool, but I question KT's attempted strong-arming.

You can sue anyone over anything you want. It's up the the courts to decide if the lawsuit carries any weight.

If the KT coach did sue KT Rolster would lose a fan. Thankfully he did not. Not that I agree what the poster did was acceptable, but suing is not either. As long as it did not threaten FlaSh or anyone else, there is no reason to do so. Just the average fan messages.

99.999% of internet people dont have the power to get their Company and sue someone who trash talks them. so instead we just realise its some random lolfag we dont even know, and move on. we come to terms with things psychologically and with reason, rather than throwing money and power and ragefits at them
so you should ask yourself is it right to fuck up someone physically (sueing them, national newspaper, parents and school involved etc) for dissing you indirectly (they're mindlessly talking to their keyboard or a lolfag community and not straight to you or your email inbox) and annonymously in a casual troll/student-owned forum?
no its not fucking right so people shouldnt be given that power.
anyone who is shocked by "rudeness" and obnoxious or impolite behaviour should try spending some time in a normal community rather than one that bans 10,000s of members every year. go live in some unmoderated communities and games where someone saying they're going to rape your sister is normal and lighthearted fun/expression. go browse some guro communities but dont think you can call them out and get them arrested after you make the choice to step into their world You can go live in your guro communities. I like this moderated one much better, thanks.

Geez, if you could sue people for insulting words on the internet in the US then everyone on 4chan would have a life sentence by now. Also

Just because there are communities like that doesn't make it right or OK, just because most aren't punished for being dicks and just because it's the internet doesn't make it acceptable, I just wish more people were actually held accountable.

I haven't found the posts, and I think the original posts were all erased. Heard that it had to do with attacking his personality, appearance, and parents. Although I'm not sure if KT will actually follow through, especially since Flash apparently wants to let him off, I know that people have been sued before on DC. -edit- looked up a few previous cases, and apparently on 스갤, - a guy in 2005 was about to sued for pretending to be other users and flaming players, but he committed suicide before the suit (the suing occurred after the suicide, not before. the owner of DC sued him only to find out that he was already dead) - a guy posted that he was going to kidnap, rape and kill [B_Blade]Leader's daughter(probably not for real, but just to state how much he hated him), he read it, obviously got pissed off, and took legal action
hmm.... do you think that korean website has even worse comments/posts than youtubers? hahaha
