Long live the continuing dominance of broodwar ( Dune 2000 reference of course )
Welcome to my 2011 in review , basically I have time on my hand and decided to write up maybe a 50% coverage of what happen in 2011 , major events and disheartening sad events .Though not everything is really that bad to say .To be truthful , when I noticed there was a 2011 in review of sc2 , I was jealous to the core and I thought to my self ? Hey if the teamliquid team is busy with their work , maybe I could do one for broodwar and so here it begins .
Teams Disbanding
The year 2011 hasn't been kind to bw at all , not at all , three major teams being disbanded because sponsors in their execution thought of other means of delivering their product to the targeted audience and using bw to deliver that promotion has been costly . It's really speculative and it can be other reason's the company may pull out of the broodwar scene but on what basis their true motives was for disbanding ? We probably will never know .
Financing a pro gaming team especially a starcraft team requires lots of money investment and than relying on this system to provide exposure of their brand to consumers is quite risky .Although team's which are famous and that are doing well , relating pro gamers with the brand may automatically aligned spectators and fan's to buy their product ( I know I am one of them ) . Sadly this isn't happening for teams as seen below .
As there were not performing as much as much as team's like Skt1,Samsung Khan and KT rolster . This three teams were performing really badly even in the stx tournament cup because of the rumours of the team disbanding and it's really sad to hear about them going through this kind of phase and asked to perform well . When they know , there is possibilities that this is their last time they are playing this game .
Three major casualties have affected broodwar scene as we know , MBC game removal,Wemade Fox and Hwazeung Oz . In the memory of
WemadeFox
Hwazeung Oz
MBC Game Hero
Team's disbanding has always been part of broodwar , although it has never hit bw scene as hard as this one did, Wemade fox once the home of legendary player Nada now longer exist as a place to honour his victory,Hwazeung Oz once a major team full with talent, MBC game which holds some of the most interesting players ranging from Saint , Shark,Hyun, home to former god of war July and previously Bisu .
Disbanding this team's only means one thing , it created a domino effect to the remaining players , since young rookies and older players such as Midas,Anytime,Hiya,Ruby who are all famous players which carried their teams to victory . Having no place to go to, to seek refuge and comfort with their former team mates .
Anytime the protoss hero who shape up his team protoss line had to hand in the resignation form , despite him having a significant's to the bw scene . Paying his salary isn't worthy because of the history he is carrying , this also applies to Midas who was still performing well in individual leagues and proleague , Hiya who also was a A teamer decided to follow the same step and call it quits and even Ruby .
Remaining teams who have their own players to care for , could not receive the influx of players from other teams , this also means young fresh blood who are aspiring to be next bisu's , flash and jaedong had their dreams shattered , because of this sudden removal of their teams . Some quitted from the scene ,Some were lucky to get a chance to play again and found a home in other teams , Some still stream in afreeca , Over all most of them gave up their pro gaming career .
Formation of Team 8
Kespa being the parent which spawned this franchise and brand , Of course could not allow of the talented players from this disbanded team to go to the waste . Taking what they can to salvage the remaining players from the three disbanding teams , Kespa taking in to consideration of the coaches that were available, decided that Coach Joo , Coach han are the best choice to be supervising this dream team .
Rising from the ashes of Hwazeung Oz , was Jaedong the tyrant , Killer a promising young zerg, From the sudden disbandment of MBC Game hero , Were no stranger to anyone , is Sea, Tyson and Jaehoon who were performing well in their proleague games , Also BaBy from Wemadefox a young and talented terran player and Ryul , Sang were recruited in to the team .
Also being nick name the dream team by many fans , despite them being called the dream team currently they are sitting in a tight position being rank no 8 on kespa ranking because of not being able to seal the deal when situation calls for such action to do so . Though it may sound really negative in perspective to call them a hype team , they do have the talent at hand , all players that are recruited in to this team are no scrubs .
With that I wish Team 8 , all the best in their endeavours and I hope they will find a sponsor to bring them the much needed comfort and monetary compensation they all really deserve.
MBC game turn into a Music Channel
Mbc game channel has been a prominent channel for starcraft and all esport related games not only it had the best commentator in my opinion , It hosted more than many individual tournaments which created legends of the game ranging from Boxer,Iloveoov ,Savior ,Bisu ,Flash, Stork, Jaedong and many more . It's definitely a individual league which has a lot of prestige to it . From a personal point of view , I held the msl as a much more prestigious tournament than the OSL , It had a great entertaining group selection which includes having players doing silly stuff and cool ceremonies like Firebathero and even to a Drunken Hyun .
To think that all of this memories , will never be relived again due to mbc game changing it's direction to a music channel in the name of kpop for monetary purposes . Broke my heart in to pieces and most importantly , I will never be able to enjoy another commentary of msl best trio of commentators ever again because of this changes . Made this a sad parting , that I wish never happen in 2011 .
With mbc game no longer being a secondary competitor , OGN no longer has any opposition to compete against it's channel .Possibly OGN will benefit from the retirement of mbc game from the gaming scene but to us fan's , the lack of more games to watch and individual leagues to scream about . Has left us broodwar fan's asking for MORE.......
I want more of this please OGN -_-
Thank you Msl for the memories
OGN hire's former Msl commentator
At first with the recent news that has fallen upon us that msl is no longer to be existent and mbc game are to be changed into a music channel . Is definitely a bad new's to the bw scene and it's seem to be that way until this new's was released by fomos that ogn actually is hiring former msl commentators to commentate their games .
This was indeed a very commendable move by ogn for hiring this talented commentators and as evident lee sung woon and former commentators have been rocking the ogn game's with their great commentaries.
KT's violet get well movement by NeverGG
Last year one of kt's protoss player Violet was diagnosed with cancer and with that he was rush to the hospital , Luckily due to the koreans great attention in keeping their appearance good at all time , this maligned disease was able to detected early . In response to this Teamliquid.net not only put a yellow ribbon on the banner to show respect to violet and Nevergg in her effort rallied most of us to give supporting messages to violet and with the deliverance of it .
KT's players and coach were touch by it and with that were blessed with a video of Reach,Yellow , Coach Henry and even Flash left us a message as seen in the video above . I just want to say thank you and I love you Nevergg for doing this , it really made me happy .
Shinhan bank no longer sponsoring proleague while sk planet will be the official sponsor for proleague .The changes to the proleague system from bo 7 with ace match to bo5
Who would have thought Jangbi Could have done it ? Winning a Tie breaker ? Destroying Flash , Smack talking about how he has great confidence that he will be taking down every opponent in his way ? . The miracle happen , the legend of the fall that in every autumn a protoss hero will rise and win the osl .
Also it is written that a pure hearted warrior , will claim the lords of shadow oopps and yes Jangbi has the same Aura of Grabiel from castlevania lord of the shadows . To be truthful I meant a protoss hero will win the osl and Jangbi of coursed did it with style not only fan's all across the globe was screaming "OMG Jangbi Won the 2011 osl " , I think he revitalised the starcraft scene and made people interested about the game again . For that Jangbi will always have my respect for this and I hope he will continue dominating .
I want to say thank you for tl.net for allowing us bw fans a place to reside , talk about our favourite games , Go crazy about how bisu is cute(Kiett favourite player ) and that of course I don't like him , I think tl.net has become part of my extended family and I have learn a lot from the pm's from the moderator about my previous history of rage when sc2 and bw is involve about the topic . I want this to last forever and I hope bw too will also do the same .....
I want everyone to have a good year ahead and be successful in every resolution they want to pursue in . I hope you enjoy reading this closure of 2011 .
Wow, very awesome article. Even though 2011 had some good stuff happen (JangBi OSL victory), it was mostly focused on bad things (MBCGame gone and teams disbanding). Let's hope in next year we get as minimum bad news as possible and BW continues to be as epic of an adventure as it was thus far.

Anyway, great write-up and fantastic job! I'm super new to following Brood War but even I was able to appreciate Jangbi's OSL finals <3
I also really enjoyed following this season of ProLeague, I'm proud to say I didn't miss a single match, even if half of my Liquibets went horribly wrong.
Today, I played a game of bw with my fren just for fun. And after that I realize that the current sc2 can never reach bw level of e-sports, maybe hots can change that so I will just wait and see.

This made me so happy to see, THANKS SO MUCH, really.
Who needs 31000 views and 280 replies, when you've got friends in Brood War, though with just 570 views and 12 replies. It's the relationship and integrity of the community that's important, not who's got the nicer graphics or, sadly, the money.
My stance on BW being in trouble, as today's blog, is:
Your best friend’s in a band, you love his music, play it play it love it. So many good experiences and memories. Summers spent with your pals listening to it, figuring out how to play it yourself, watching the superstars jam on it. Then he goes upscale and gets much more popular, he’s got an updated sound, and he’s got loads of new fans, SO MANY MORE. Where’s that connection you had? You prefer the old music, and you stick to playing it. Your ears perk up any time you hear his name mentioned, but the people don’t know the old tracks and covers you’ve got so many memories with, they just know the new stuff. There’s nothing wrong with the new stuff, it’s bringing happiness and enjoyment to far more people, it’s much more approachable, but you, who knew it and lived it and loved it then, feel separated. And gradually the diehards fade out, the radio stations and guys who want soundtracks for their Youtube channels switch over completely to the new fourm. But having known and lived the old fuorm, you feel the flaws in the new one and don’t evolve. And that loss and distance hurts. It just hurts.
Thank you, because you've made me see that I was wrong. The Pro-sceen isin't dead! For now, so let's cherish it while it lasts.

you should want more of your team to do better than another team to fail.
otherwise you'll feel more disappointment than happiness.
I see you used my "Jangbi gets a boner while kissing the OSL trophy" photo LOL xD
Nice writeup. The memories man. This year was tough, but there were some amazing moments. The Jin Air OSL changed my life. RIP MBCGame, Hwaseung, and WeMade. And MSL T_T
Hopefully 2012 will be filled with good news. And yes, Bisu is cute and will win many OSLs this year :D
Good job writing that article, I was rather disappointed that they did not include 2011 in review BW version, I guess we can't have everything in life.

2011 was indeed a very tough year for BW, but we managed to get through it. Sometimes, I couldn't help but wonder how things would have turned out if the typhoon didn't strike SH which caused the final to get cancelled.
Hopefully BW will survive 2012, and KeSPA's plan of internationalization (read: China) will pan out. If all goes according to plans, BW should be able to wither a few more years of storms.
BW fighting~

Sea and Light were never S-class calibre players. Bisu and July weren't amazing at the same time. By the time Bisu was recognized as one of the best players, he moved to T1.
Man, for some reason I felt as if so much else happened in 2011... like the OP should have been double the length. But then it's probably because many of these events are like worth ten of 'ordinary' events
BW for life!!! Doesnt matter what team you like or hate, doesnt matter what player you cant stand to watch, or make you drool with their awesome play, doesnt matter what part of this planet you are on, BW and TL brought us all together and many of us are still here after all the trials and setbacks to our beloved game.
correction: " Shinhan bank no longer sponsoring proleague while sk proleague will be the official sponsor for proleague . " -> i believe should be "sk planet". I really enjoy reading this review, thank you. It was a good year for Woongjin Stars.
Thanks for the write-up Sawamura, those older pictures of the teams get me teared up a bit.. T.T I hope BW stays alive and kicking for a long time. From that "2 OSL Sponsor" thread , I hope one of them sponsors and the other takes Team8 with them ^^.
How about flash gets a golden badge? 3 OSL 3 MSL for flash to tie him with Nada. Also, as part of the ongoing joke regarding flash's success: Flash wins his 6th star/starcraft league and there are no more starleagues.
Nice writeup man, you really are good at injecting confidence and re assurance back into the BW players hearts , minds and souls with you're write ups, really some heart felt words , thanks for this, I'm curious why you aren't writing for TL :-P

I don't like dominating figures like Flash. I mean, he already broke the game. After having to witness his 2010 and 2011 run, It's safe to say that there will never be another player to top Flash and I think the only thing that is going to bring Flash down is going to be his age. And no one likes that.
I want a player who can match Flash NOW or else, BW will be dead when Flash starts to suck and then no one likes BW dead. You have to notice this since every game the commentators compare A-teamers to Flash, Bisu, Stork, and Jaedong. If these guys starts sucking and no one can top the level of play these guys these, then we are not far from being a fan of a dying scene. TBLS are the pillars of the current BW, and there is a current need to smash these pillars while they are strong.
I got hooked on BW when Bisu was the leading man of the scene and I've patently waited for a zerg to topple him. Jaedong came but also his bane, Flash. Then 2010 came. I do not know where to place Stork here ..
Can't believe we lost MBC and WeMade PirateZerg and Ozsucksballswithoutme's team wasn't all that much to write home about but it has been a year of up and downs. Absolutely great writeup<3
I like this )). Nice write up man. I enjoyed reading it.
To the folks getting sad that BW is dead or something, no... Brood War in Korea alone is more popular than any other competitive video game :|. It's a national pro sport in Korea, recognized and managed by the Korean government, and is the only video game that has appealed to all sorts of people in a society rather than just gaming nerds. It's not dead, nowhere close. It will only die when Kespa decides to switch it over to SC2, which seems they're in the process of doing.
Sawamura, I love you <3 MBC Game TT WMF TT Really going to miss those players that didn't manage to get onto a team. Perfectman, Anytime, Midas, Ruby.. Jangbi's win <3 KT's SPL win <3 And most importantly Brood War survived 2011. 2012 will be Brood War's year, Fighting!
Been disappointing for me for BW because Jaedong just hasn't been playing so hot for what seems like all of 2011 (I know not all but feels ) . Hope he can dominate in 2012.
aghh the tears can't stop falling , my first thread in tl.net to be spotlighted <3 , didn't expect it to be welcome by many people , felt like I just won the masters or something . Got to stop feeling good . Thanks I will think about writing up a small section for jing ho and all other veterans who retired if I can .
In the meanwhile I will listen to this song and cherish the small victory :D

Fanboyism aside, you're pretty spot-on in that there is not a lot of new blood entering the BW scene. This is probably the largest long-term threat BW faces. What are the new players that have cycled into the scene since 2008-9? Wooki? Rain? Action? We can probably count them on one hand...
Nice read, good effort Sawa It was definitely a very rough year, August and the months afterwards before PL (and the other good news) started were very hard to stomach. So much talent was lost. I actually fear the coming August, even though it's pretty far away. But I hope and pray for another successful year of proleague and OSL. May the BW gods look over us kindly and find Team 8 a sponsor. + Show Spoiler +

I am looking more to these players: Baby, Hydra, Bogus, Stats, Fantasy.
They really don't have to be new players. With the number of games reduced bin the current PL and the removal of MSL, I don't think we will be seeing more from these players' true potential. What we need are more games to be played. Progamers complained about the games they had to play last season. Now, I think they can even barely play at all and with the absence of MBCH, WMF, and Oz; there is even a less saturation of players to play against other players. Baby, for example, when WMF was still around, he could play against TBLS which would mean we can guage him more and can be a a potential next 'TBLS'.
I don't know if I am making any sense to you guys but the idea is in my head and I just can't convey it right. All I know is that Flash needs to go down. Along with the KT because they 're the defending champion.

Well, if you really want to take down Flash, playing more games won't necessarily be the solution. I think Flash's strength isn't just his in-game decisionmaking, but that he probably uses his practice time more efficiently than any other progamer. Having less games evens out the playing field substantially in that regard.
And your hate for Flash really sounds like GG.Nore, lol

Fanboyism aside, you're pretty spot-on in that there is not a lot of new blood entering the BW scene. This is probably the largest long-term threat BW faces. What are the new players that have cycled into the scene since 2008-9? Wooki? Rain? Action? We can probably count them on one hand...
It's not that I only dislike Flash. Bisu would be following him in my list of Players-that-I-want-to-be-beaten but these 2 even out each other. I want a zerg (Hydra, I think) to beat Bisu constantly in an straight-forward game yet I want Bisu to improve his PvT so he can take out Flash.
Think of it as me wanting to have really good games and not really about siding a specific player.
P.S. I dont think it's about practice games and how it matters. It's about how Flash broke the game in a sense that he knows what his opponent would do. It's like chess, he is a couple of moves ahead against his opponents when he plays and that aura about him that sometimes you can see how other players cower and turtle in fear against him.
this is the first time that i really feel that the bw community is really like the underdog in tl, seeing the sc2 reviews makes me sad, but whatever, ill be loyal to bw till the end (:, great writeup ! always nice to read something bw-related, the jangbi's osl really made me very very happy ^^ now ill keep organizing the vods of the current pl in my hdd xd
Great read for someone who didn't follow as closely as they would have liked to. Filled in a lot of facts about things I had only heard of and reminded me of a few things I told myself I wanted to search. Thanks for all the time you put into this.

Anyway, great write-up and fantastic job! I'm super new to following Brood War but even I was able to appreciate Jangbi's OSL finals <3
I also really enjoyed following this season of ProLeague, I'm proud to say I didn't miss a single match, even if half of my Liquibets went horribly wrong.
lol .. I want KT to be last.
you should want more of your team to do better than another team to fail.
otherwise you'll feel more disappointment than happiness.

aura... not gameplay, he meant that Flash just being Flash already gives him psychological advantage even before he enters the booth. Players play generally worse vs him( a specially those not as established, the middle-tier mainly), because its hard for them to be open-minded vs such revered player. Its partly true sadly or not, it would be best if Flash was stripped of "invincibility", so most people would just start playing at their capabilities vs him. I dont hate Flash in fact i like him, but i would give much more for players to stop doing fail cheeses vs him, because they dont have courage to play macro vs him. It would create better matches, its kinda anti-climax when match practically ends because Flash sent his scv in right direction.
When could you even say there was a large influx of new players anyway... it's always been like this honestly. The level of skill required for regular A-team play is massive; a lot of players peak below the level and never even make it out of B-team. The disbanded teams hurt somewhat but there's still players making it through; Dear, Shy, Wooki, Where, Perfective... then you had a generation before that roughly including Reality, TurN, Brave, Grape, Ssak, Classic, By.Sun.

I think everyone has seen Best and Jaedong (2010) and Bisu try to macro against him. I think everyone has seen how they consistently get overrun by him. Look at effort vs Flash G2 and Flash vs Hydra: both of them got 3 base before pool and still lost.

Um, not sure where you're getting your facts from but players do often go macro games against flash, and still end up getting crushed. Just ask Best in the 2011 Proleague finals.
It was great to read this. As someone who has stepped away from the Starcraft scene because of the blandness of Starcraft 2, this brings back a lot of those excited feelings of the Brood War days.
It's a bittersweet feeling as it's sad to see all of these teams disbanding.
