One of windows 8's prerelease versions I tried had a new feature that improved compatibility with some of the older games like BW. Under the compatibility tab under properties there was a checkbox, which would fix certain color errors with BW (such as start screen being light blue). I am however unaware whether it exists on the release version. So it is unconfirmed at the moment. If this was true it would be a great improvement over windows 7/Vista. Could someone who has windows 8 confirm this?

No freezes, only the rankicons are missing in the lobby, but since you can just check their profile to get their ranking it doesnt matter to much.^^ The freezing thing is wierd because it seems to vary from computer to computer. My computer crashes while running BW while the one downstairs does not, despite both running Win7 Home edition.

Not the stop and go kind of lag but just a general massive drop in FPS to the point where my key strokes are actually too slow to input between my mouse clicks. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Have you toggled the CPU throttling option? Try the CPU saviour plugin: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=66104

Select just one core for brood war to run in and then your good. Brood war has issues running with more than 1 core systems and graphics cards is also an issue for it to run. I have a headset as well that just will not run brood war sounds. Brood war will not emit the sounds through the headset for whatever reason. Brood war is about trial an error for it work correctly.

Run the game, go to the processes and right click on startcraft and then choose set affinity. You need admin privileges to do this so just click on the icon in the bottom left hand part of the window that says show all processes. Win8: - win7 compatibility - cpu throttling (color cycling seems to not slow down the game) remaining problems: - bnet doesn't show the icons like ping bars (ddemulate totally screws the bnet UI in win8, so don't use it) Win7: - win98/ME compatibility - disable desktop composition (disables glass effect while application runs) - cpu throttling, disable color cycling (maybe even animated portraits) - get the color fix and execute it (you can open the files with a text editor to see its content... they add values to the registry): 32-bit: http://ftp.blizzard.com/pub/starcraft/scbw116_x86.reg 64-bit: http://ftp.blizzard.com/pub/starcraft/scbw116_x64.reg - make a shortcut and add " ddemulate" at the end of the target line to fix the icons in battle.net. It would look like this: "E:\Games\Starcraft\StarCraft.exe ddemulate". Use the shortcut to start the game and apply the other compatibility changes to it. - I think there was a problem with black screenshots in direct draw games. Just try to make a screenshot ingame and check if it is black (it's created in your starcraft folder). If it is black, you need to change a value in the registry to fix it. Find "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DirectDraw" in your registry and check "EnablePrintScreen" to be enabled (dword:00000001). Vista: - same as Win7, if I remember it correctly Black borders on the screen/not fullscreen: - that's likely to be caused by your graphic card's driver settings. Check the program that comes with your driver to alter settings. I've the impression Broodwar runs better on Win8 than on Win7/Vista.

Note that i am not quite a computer expert, so i might be doing things wrong. Windows vista has no problems at all for me. I redownloaded the game via battle.net and it runs smoothly, without any color issues. Windows 7 does give some problems, even when downloaded from battle.net. Whenever i open starcraft, i get a black screen. the music's fine, i can even go through the menu's, without seeing anything, but the black screen remains. I fixed that by going to control panel -> device manager -> display adapters and disable (in my case) ADM radeon HD 6470M. After that it works without a problem, no color issues whatsoever. Please take note that the computers i tried for this had a different hardware setup.

+ Show Spoiler + DirectDraw applications Freeze on Windows 7 anywhere between 1 minute and 3 hours into running them. Scouring the web, I have come to the conclusion that this is a Windows 7 issue, and there is no link between hardware, or drivers as it occurs on ATI, Intel and Nvidia chips. Games such as Starcraft may freeze as soon as you hit the first menu screen, or as late as half way through a mission. Age of Empires * games freeze on a black screen between the last intro video and the main menu (but as tested so far once in a mission will not freeze) Warcraft 2 BNE is the same as Starcraft. Worms Armageddon is effected randomly as well. Heroes of might and magic 1 and 2 Starlancer (between missions or on he main menu) Blood Omen during during movie sequences So far i've verified that Affinity does not fix it. Process Priority does not fix it. End tasking or pausing Explorer does not fix it. Selective startup does not fix it. Running without drivers will not fix it (don't even bother suggesting it). This is an issue that doesn't have any correlation to system configuration, The game that gets the most coverage with this issue is Starcraft and though that might get a Patch, its no doubt that the Age of empires games won't. The freeze is not a hardlock, rather its a freeze of the display and input controls. Processes in the background continue running and if you are in a chat on skype or xfire these continue as well according to some users. Someone mentioned a Race issue between Ddraw and WDDM, but i've no idea how to verify that. Specific Starcraft issue is here http://www.sevenforums.com/gaming/11659-starcraft-freezes-after-1-5-minutes-playing.html http://www.sevenforums.com/gaming/10190-starcraft-system-crash.html but Issues for Age of empires and worms can be found across the internet. theres even on here http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itproappcompat/thread/bde26b63-e8fc-46ac-8541-7f8154c8328d Note: All the fixes known to work on Vista, do not work on Windows 7. This issue only occurs in games that also have the bad colours issue, so basically any 8bit/256 colour titles. 16bpp appear to be fine.
