Amazing. I bet Sayle would hate it though! (The replay part)
|
This looks like it could be promising. It's good to see some BW-related development . I particularly like the hotkey manager: I use a Dvorak keyboard, and it's a huge pain to switch layouts to play BW.

O_O This is really great, going to go try it out right now!
|
I want to try using this to cast. I don't know if it a positive or if it is too much, but it looks too good to not at least give it a shot.
|
This looks almost too good to be true O_O
I really need to get to sleep now, but I'll definitely play around with this first thing in the morning
|
This is fucking dope. I'm trying it out right now. I knew this would come.
|
Wow, amazing
But I kinda dislike "Hotkey manager" thingy :/
|
OK, so I tried it and it works great. I mean, this has upped my replay viewing experience by like 500%. (and I finally know how many SCV's to build per base, lol)
The only thing that I have to say is that I had a bit of trouble with the windowed mode, so I disabled it. Basically what happened was that I was playing around with the buttons and somehow ended up making it taller than my monitor so I am now unable to see the top bar to change the windowing again. This might be an issue but I was never planning on using windowed mode so for me it doesn't matter too much, I'm just pointing it out for you to know.
Also, if you are thinking of features to put in, maybe an ability to hop to a certain part of a replay by clicking on the progress bar, I mean I just hate how you can't rewind it. I'm not sure it this is doable or not, it's just something I'm throwing out there.
But so far, all the features are great. I commend you, Mars_Quirinus, for your great work. Good luck with this project, I'll definitely be using this.
|
Sick sick this is awesome! Multiple unit selection and player hotkey selection would be awesome too (but I guess there already are plugins for that).
Here's a mirror in case something doesn't work for someone.
Edit: Also, our names are almost identical, I guess we both had the same idea. Cheers!

Not quite sure if those additional features are listed as a fluff or Mars is actually working on them, but either way, even though the game's fourteen years old, I also can't find myself too excited for them. The replay loader and its features are amazing though, so huge props to Mars!

Really cool as a replay tool, and auto matchmaking is cool. However, changing hotkeys just ain't BW. Neither is playing in a higher resolution. I guess if you make your own league, you can have your own rules where these things are ok. That wouldn't be too bad, although I'm sure people would have mixed opinions since no other tournament will have these rules, putting stress on other servers to either reject your users or incorporate your changes.
I would focus on automatchmaking as a priority. It sounds the most interesting.
|
If automatchmaking somehow fixes people from being unable to host games then we could potentially see a huge increase in BW's population.
|
Wow that replay interface... *_*...
downloading...
|
Our goals:
Create auto matchmaking plugin User only needs to start launcher and hit search button. Everything else will be done automatically: Launcher will search for enemy to match your skill level. Launcher will test connection between you and your opponent to make sure the game won't lag(real connection test, not ping). Launcher will solve problems with local ip-addresses and port-forwarding. SC2TV implemented their server with autosearch engine a few years ago. Unfortunately, they didn't have enough time to support it. I'm happy to announce that now they are supporting our project. They consult us on different tech questions and will provide source code of their server (if we need it).
I'm excited. Please do this.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
However, you shouldn't let people change their hotkeys. Letting people do that is like letting people play fighting games with automatic combos. The fact that H and P are so far away is part of the game. If they weren't, microing two groups of mutalisks at the same time would be much easier than it is.
It will also force people to get used to new hotkeys, or play with a disadvantage, because you can change your hotkeys to a superior layout.

I'm getting this error saying: the instruction at 0x00409003 referenced memory at 0x04931000. The memory could not be read whenever the thing tries to open the replay automatically, and it seems that turning off the auto open thing removes the extra functionality. Is anyone else getting these problems?

I don't like the hotkey manager. What made brood war special is the hotkeys. Allowing people to change hotkeys would make the game worse. Mechanics should always remain a core part of brood war

I'd like to sponsor and fund this project for further development

the excitement when suddenly FLEET BEACON or GREATER SPIRE or NUIKE SILO get scrolled over when visiting a player's base in the middle of a game, or not knowing what will happen when 2 maxed armies engage is one of the things that makes bw so great. taking away that factor of spectating would make it dull and boring like that other game

I also have the regular install of BW, but the "Automatic launch of replay files" doesn't work. It just opens BW, and I still have to go through menus and stuff, and no procuction/unit/worker count too. Do I need another program other than the regular cd version of BW? I'm running it as admin already as well.

This is really awesome!
Is there a reason that the automatic replay viewer uses the multiplayer menu to open the replays? Viewing the replays through the Singe Player menu will remove 5 second countdown timer, making it even faster
|
Hmmm, I run Brood War through a single core might help as well, give yourself admin privileges through the windows task messenger. Go to the Brood War process and "set affiliation" and change to single core.
I don't know if this changes anything but I'm running a windows 7 machine. Also try opening 1.16.1 replays?

That was literally my only gripe with this, otherwise it sounds amazing! You really are making a difference if you can implement these features!
Edit: I've tested it out, was amazed by speed it went through menus haha.
Two questions: Can you implement advloaders statinfo feature into this, for more replay goodness? Can you make it possible if the person adds the account details, for it to jump to multiplayer, since watching reps together with others is a fun thing(missing from sc2 for example) ?

Nice so far, but there is room for improvements: - Possibility to move the unit icons from their current position. There are some UMS maps displaying information at that position. - It would be nice if it didn't automatically re-host the replay so I could choose another one while in the game.

It wouldn't be that bad if they just let you switch between official language set ups. The biggest issue comes from if you play this server and then you have to play a tournament, you might not be allowed to use your modified hotkeys. Also it is kinda annoying to ask users to spend hours figuring out the optimal setup and then memorising it. Especially since most users have been used to the old set up years. It's intimidating for new players and old players alike lol. It discourages you from playing the game because if you don't do it you feel like you're playing sub optimally, but to do it is a huge pain.

1. Our launcher doesn't support advLoader plugins. I don't know what statinfo feature does. I should take a look at it. 2. It'll be implemented with auto matchmaking plugin. Creating multiplayer games and watching replays together are basically the same thing.

This project is awesome. It should make the game's interface much more appealing, especially for newcomers, and as such improves the future of BW. And 3 months ago people were saying the game was dead! The passion people have for this game is truly inspirational. From people like Sonic trying to keep the scene alive against all odds, to the coders like Mars_Quirinus hacking and modernizing the game for free. It gives me hope that BW can live on for many years to come.
|
Hey this programm is astonishing. It is simple, but amazing. One little suggestion, please implement a function to move the Tab a little bit down, so you can use it with Liquid's Mineral overlay. That would be really nice.
Edit: One more thing. Just make it also resizeable. So resizeable and moveable, would be really nice.
|
I would suggest you use Glicko2 for the ranking. If the implementation of that is beyond you, then just use ELO. ELO is simpler but not as accurate as Glicko2. iCCup's ranking system is atrocious and should not be used.
Will you be running an actual battle.net server for this (PVPGN or something?) or will your server set up LAN-style games for the players? If it's the second, ideally you'd put in chat channels with the launcher too.
|
Before everyone gets too excited over this guy's ideas, remember that they're just that: ideas. What he's done here with this program and post is a lot like building a chain-link fence around his house and saying "Coming soon: Eiffel Tower!".
The vast majority of the functionality provided by this program comes from a different project, and project you *should* be supportive of: BWAPI. All these guys have done is wrap that stuff in a GUI that doesn't look horrible.
If you'd like a much more sophisticated replay observer plugin, I'd recommend taking a look at AssuredVacancy's work. He clearly put a lot more time into it, AND he isn't throwing pie-in-the-sky ideas out there to try to make money.

Ok, here is the ONLY hotkey change I would recommend -
F1-F6 become camera hotkeys.
Honestly that is the only thing that pisses me off. If you want I guess you could let users make profiles but hardcore players will probably get pissed off.

hotkeys - im not really sure but it sounds like kinda cheating
unit/build count - it takes away an very important aspect of observing BW.. that the viewer is unsure what is he going to see next.. (like zillion carriers suddenly in making etc )
matchmaking system - ESSENTIAL !!!!!!!!! MAKE IT WORK PLEEEEAAASEE !!!

Mars_Quirinus, looks like you are using quite old BWAPI version, strange dll injector or method you are executing StarCraft.exe. The problem is that BroodWar fails to start using autoreplay feature under wine. + Show Spoiler + However your launcher injects fine using a separate dll injector, for example InfectedStarCraft.
+ Show Spoiler +Also I suggest you to temporarily unload BWAPI in case you are going to use the launcher for playing games (not observing). BWAPI is very heavy on resources. It analyses every single frame from the game and gets all available information without any requests for it. Also it uses C++ virtual tables which are slow. This is a great framework for writing AIs and also can be used for showing information additional when spectating. But I doubt it can be used without problems while playing games.
