I agree that in an ideal world, a server not run by iccup would be a great thing, but there are significant roadblocks in getting there, and even then trying to get enough people playing to make matchmaking work would be tough. If you are set on trying to do this, make sure you go in with a really well developed plan

Just for starters, it's not as simple as developing and implementing the technology required to do the stuff on your list, but it's about maintainence. How are you going to deal with hackers, deal with disputes. You'll need lots of staff, clear rule sets and stuff like that, which is a hard thing to find. Volunteers by their nature are very unreliable, so you'd need a really good system to streamline their work or incentivise it. I just honestly am not sure how well this would work, even with iccup being stupid. At the end of the day, it's just me, sayle and stratos blacklisted, not really a huge deal imo (fish is better anyway). You do need a critical mass for the server to work long term else it will be yet another empty private server.

Honestly, I don't expect this server to get 500+ players at all because of the dead population starcraft has. I'm not throwing away the idea that it can't eventually build up its playerbase but it's just unlikely The best bet however is the antihack, auto matchmaker, and international friendliness(translations in multiple languages)

- Automatic port forwarding to allow almost anyone to host games Oh god that took me like forever to set up, so I think that'd be amazing. I think the idea is great, and even though I don't play much bw having a new server would certainly motivate me to play more!

now they are even corrupt? i bid you to show proof. Well, technically i dont care, but i wont be playing on a new server until it is more frequently used then ICC. Which isnt gonna happen. TL is a rather small community BW wise. And many people worldwide still play ICC.

Well, this thread has only been up for a couple of hours, but as of writing this there 79 "Yes" votes for moving to a new server, along with 20 "if enough people switch". If the new server would get a shout-out in tournaments like TLS, and perhaps even be the server that the tournament is played on, I don't think that getting players there would necessarily be a problem. What likely would be problem though is what Kiante mentioned, getting volunteers to work on this. If you're running server, it needs to be up 24/7, and have people working on it roughly 24/7 as well. Getting reliable and competent people to regularly invest a lot of their spare time for no monetary compensation is not as simple as it sounds. I'm sure there are people that fits that description, the question is if there's enough of them. But, as Kiante also pointed out, with a really easy and streamlined system, it might be possible to do this. But it will take time, and it will not be an easy thing to accomplish.

It will be popular for the first couple days but maybe 15 of those 79 will actually switch. 4-5 of those 15 will switch back to iccup once they realized the other 64 did too. You're left with 10 people. Four of them will be AFK in op teamliquid and 3 will be chatting. At least you'll get to play 3 man KOTH games.

Just get 200 skynet bots to use your matchmaking system. Then run an event where humans have to fight ai to the death in some gigantic scoreboard server wide event.... About as easy as implementing an automatchmaking system for BW....
