Hey everyone!
A week ago, I've started SC BW English Commentators thread (which I'll get to casting games eventually, but got hiccups currently) and at that time, I also had another interesting idea in mind. After debating, discussing with Kngtheo on snipealot stream chat, and some constant pondering, I figured this is best to open up for discussion for now.
----------------
Is there currently any interest toward StarCraft Broodwar Podcasts at the moment?
Poll: Are you interested of Weekly Korean-BW Scene Podcasts?Yes (63) 85% No (10) 14% Unsure (1) 1% Other (0) 0% 74 total votes Your vote: Are you interested of Weekly Korean-BW Scene Podcasts? (Vote): Yes (Vote): No (Vote): Unsure (Vote): Other
----------------
Initial Brainstorms:
1. A weekly podcast of pod-caster's thoughts on current SC BW scene + updates and news-y yet causal format on the scene.
2. Probably be 1/3 update info (happenings in Korean SC BW), 1/3 of highlights/brief commentaries on any particular matches, 1/3 of my personal knowledge (mixed with progamer/Korean caster) perspectives of SC BW build strats
3. Translation of people like Hiya, Larva, Mong and other progamers that may have funny comical moments onstream
4. Can easily use the winner interview threads as references if not enough personal references on afreeca streams (especially with KSL/SSL on-going)
5. If too long, people won't bother to listen, if sound too boring, it'll become a complete flop. What would be the perfect balance + time length for this?
6. I personally have experience with radio broadcasting and audio editing since I ran a school radio station show when I was in college at one point
7. Audio Format: MP3 with LAME encoding + Audacity (for now)
Final thoughts?
After further thought, this is now debatable since almost all modern devices accept AAC by default. AAC is superior in quality than MP3 and may result in smaller size space... Hmm.... any thoughts for audiophiles out there?
Most likely MP3 (than AAC) as that is universal for all Apple, Windows. Linux and Android products + greater compatibility (at the cost of lesser quality since AAC > MP3).
8. Recording tools to use: Blue Microphones Yeti as a mic, Audacity for easy/free/simple audio recorder/editor (also one I'm most familiar at)
Not sure if pop filter is necessary (if so, any suggestion to go along with a Yeti?) or the need for more advanced/other audio recording/editing program. Thoughts?
9. Currently searching and searching for nice background music/sounds to use along with podcast. Been a while I did something like this so my resources are rather limited. Would especially REALLY appreciate if anyone have any tips/suggestion/samples/options for this section the most!
----------------
Final Thoughts:
I know our BW community isn't as big as other neighbor communities of SC2, LoL, Dota2 so I'm unclear how many of us are here exactly but I know there's plenty of lurkers. So I'm hoping lurker or not, can I get an idea who would exactly want to see an active weekly podcast in the making?

I'd love a BW Podcast, but quality is needed. If you could get some TL people to cast with you it could be cool.
Think TL Mods, Sayle, Elegant, Kiante etc etc etc.

You're right! But unfortunately, I'm only planning solo caster for this. There's a lot of limitations when you involve a second or third person and this is also something I want to personally practice, develop, and do myself. Maybe guest co-caster appearances in future.
Now if someone else also want to do a BW Podcast separately solo or as a group, they're also more than welcome to do so!
My question for this thread is specifically what the interest and market for SC BW (Korean scene specific) podcast is at this time?

Maybe you shouldn't make it weekly but instead bi-weekly or monthly or something? So you all don't get bored or don't have enough stuff to say?

Good suggestion. That's also possible too. Perhaps cater podcast times based on when there's activity in SC BW Korean Scene? Like during Starleague KSL/SSL month, you would see more podcast than the downtime months where there isn't any big tourney going on?
But in terms of content, oh there's plenty of content for sure. Just check page 17 of Afreeca Feed thread on BW General forums. In just 1 hour tuning to the last hour of Bisu stream, I learned at least 7 different things about Bisu today.

If you need help getting some resources, such as afreecaTV VODs (with translations), I may be able to help you.
|
Sure, would listen to it!
|
I would very much appreciate a podcast that acted as News / Recap, highlighting results in ongoing tournies along with related incidents/interviews and maybe picking one game or two to show scenes from or recommend for viewers.
If additional content needed/idea: Give a short preview about important matches/announcements to happen in the coming week.
Most of all I'd say the whole thing should be in the 10-15 minute range, I think anything beyond 15minutes would be excessive.
This is a really good idea!

Hi,
Interest checks are dumb! I don't mean you're dumb for doing one, but please avoid it because it is rarely called for.
My advice:
Do a pilot podcast and see if people like it! Specifics like the length of time and the segments etc can be felt out through experimentation. But if you want to know whether or not anyone will really listen to your cast, you have to actually do one. I have no way of knowing yet if you are interesting to listen to. If you're really cool, lots of popular gaming casts are about an hour of two cool people bantering and going through a loose agenda. If you're not so cool, a really well prepared 20 minute low down might still be tolerable. An hour is a good target because that's how long many people's work commutes are. Twenty minutes is a good target because that's a typical attention span when someone can just decide to get up and do something else.
gl hf It's cool you have experience, so I'll definitely have a listen if you do a pilot.

I would definitely appreciate the help getting resources, one of my reasons why I put this thread in public and open up to discussion since I can only be limited as 1 single person following SC BW.
If you wish, we can discuss more on PM!

This is a really good idea! That's definitely a good idea. I had something like that in mind originally but you articulated it much better than I would think of myself. I'll definitely continue brainstorming and consider your advice along with Chef's.

Definitely a pilot and experimentation is needed for anything new and fresh to begin, so you're totally right about that. I was a bit of on a slippery slope before I made the thread since I was merely just brainstorming for a while now without any certainty nor vision to go through. But feedback, advice, and responses are giving me a clearer view on how to go about if I were to do this.
You have a different view of length/time and I definitely didn't thought of the podcast catering to commuters (while on the way to work or home) which is another perspective to look at. That's something to keep in mind for a longer-term session and with more organization. I suppose kinda like how Day9 once started his shows with series of pilots/experimentation and low content only to spread across a wider broad audience format later on.
Whatever and however way around I go about this, I appreciate all these helpful tips for me or anyone else (for that matter) who's interested in starting a podcast for SC BW related content.
Thanks all!

If you can put huge fan names and ex-BW players like Artosis, Day9, Idra discussing this ressurgence of BW, at least for the first episode, the show would take the boost it needed. (It's hard I know, but they are passionate )

As far as weekly content goes, my BW weekly show will return in February and my live casts begin this Saturday. So I'm quite excited for the new year. Currently I'm battling the flu and hope to be alive for this Saturday. As far as the OP is concerned, if you want to make a weekly podcast then hell yeah, go ahead. However, you will never get the feedback in this thread enough to inspire you alone. Just do it if you think it will be fun. Unless you have very strong knowlage of the scene and history of what is going on, I doubt a solo podcast would be hardly enjoyable at all. The best example of this being done right is the ongoing series "Thorin thoughts"
|
Day9 podcast (before his dailies) were amazingly informative to listen to. If you guys could incorporate some aspects of that into your podcasts I am totally on board
|
I'd be interested in a podcast, that covers the foreign scene as well. There is less to talk about but a few subjects here and there are nice. Also: invite guests to talk about topics, for ex. guys who are knowledgable in the korean scene, that do community related stuff that is interesting. Tournaments Organizers, Casters,Movie Makers, Staff, etc. Don't neglect the russian an the chinese scene, both are big and healthy (in comparison) and we know to little about what's going on

That's a true point too. I'd advise inviting someone into this, it doesn't take away "your credit in it" or something if that's a concern (;
