ANOTHER EDIT: Nevermind, Scan and Koreans have confirmed you do indeed need a Korean ID. I thought I mistranslated the post, turns out I was right. Yayyyy *dances over useless forum post*
Another EDIT: They edited it to say this is for "special benefits" which is, unsurprisingly, super fucking vague and says nothing. There was no notice of this edit.
EDIT: Melee, UMS, absolutely everything including making accounts is exactly the same as before. Find a Korean friend that will let you use their number. If you have to go on Twitter or Reddit.
There has not been a post about this, I will add a link if there is an announcement on the FishBattle forums.
This is a huge blow to foreigners, you will need to verify a Korean phone number starting April 1st to access the ladder. Three accounts per phone number, no more for any reason whatsoever. The requirement of 30 wins and 48 hours online will be removed. quick edit: This is to make the ladder more accessible because right now the ladder is extremely difficult due to the 30 melee win requirement. This makes it very hard for newer players to get into StarCraft. With the recent influx of players Fish staff are doing everything they can to make the ladder more accessible.
I don't have much else to put here, but I felt this is extremely important. If you ladder on Fish, find a Korean friend willing to lend their number.

Omg Winter will you be my Korean friend?

What the actual f*ck? Who does stuff like this? Is it really the medieval ages still? Do you just have to enter a number or are they actually calling and asking you questions?

It's to keep people from making tons of smurfs or pulling a Last and taking up 20% of the top 50 ladder.
Smurfing is a pretty big problem in Korean games that don't require ID, and why would Fish just sit back and let all 100,000 new players since mid-November drive themselves away?
|
A reasonable anti-smurfing measure, although it really gives Fish a ton of personal data information they should not be having at all.
Any possibility they'll give non-koreans some other option of registration or is this the end for most foreigner's ability to play on Fish?
What about existing IDs, will these be carried through without the new verification process or will all existing accounts have to get verified?
Edit: You said ladder, does this mean anyone can still access Fish server and make accs, they just can't participate on Ladder without this verification code? How is this verification entered once on bnet?

The full list of account rules as of April 1st are as follows:
- Only three accounts may be created per 14 days by a single user
- Boosting yourself with secondary accounts, including melee stats, is forbidden
- Phone verification is required to participate in the ladder
- Only three accounts may be linked to a single phone number and therefore user
- 30 melee wins will no longer be required to participate in the ladder
- Users banned for map hacking will be IP banned and their phone number will be invalid for activation
Unofficial notes for foreigners by WinterViewbot420 (gotta look snazzy here shhh):
- Korean friends are allowed to use their phone number to activate your account
- Consistent lag may result in a ban from the ladder, but not from Fish or anything else
- Bad manners such as corner floating may result in IP, MAC, HWID and motherboard UID ban
- A VPN may result in a ban depending on latency and past actions

I'm not disrespecting foreigners, I'm stating that it's a problem. In what reality should an F player on one server beat an A or B player on another?

I think it is an okay idea even though non-korean and korean who live in different countries will have the difficulty of entering ladder games. Korean server games, we are always required to verify our ID by cellphone(going through text message; aka: Code). That's why there's not a lot of people smurfing in games(1 ID for 3 accounts i believe, and this is for Riot Games KR LOL).
I would like the admin to think of the people who live in outside and solve this problem in another way instead of borrowing korean friends' phone number.

implement xenophobic policy (though its common in other kor games) to accomodate new casual players, also get to gather personal data to sell to 3rd parties. kill 3 birds with 1 stone, nice.

don't blame them for doing this. if this is SOP for their online games and is part of their culture, then why should they accommodate for foreigners? People will figure out how to spoof korean phone numbers regardless

I'm going to ignore the semantics about F fish players vs top iccup players and simply ask: Why would a players' rank on iccup or any other server be relevant when they are playing on Fish? What's the problem if F players were actually better than A rank on iccup? Separate servers' ranking systems are independent.

uh no, unlike kssn's it's near impossible to spoof phone numbers and receive text messages from them.

Hm well that sucks, there goes my goal to play on Fish ladder

While I don't disagree with your main point, please, let's focus on these rule changes. Personally, I think this is pretty big news. Wonder if it'll affect the amount of foreigners who play on fish and if in turn, this will cause some to go back to ICCup.

Verification by mobile phone is pretty much everywhere in Korea
it's not surprising that this is their go-to method.
