Balance patches in most games seem to do more harm than good. But I agree with Prometheus, it's possible to do a better job through discussion and care. But the starting point shouldn't be a bad unit or spell. It should always be "which aspect of the game needs to be more fun?" - In this case it's about adding more variety. The best way to achieve that right now without breaking anything would be changing the map pool. Scouts with speed are a fun unit to micro with, and isn't as limited in it's role as the other two, so I still feel that it's worth discussing it. An idea that I see often is giving them speed and sight range by default. It seems fair at first, considering that they cost so much but die so easily. Could the added micro potential make them a viable opening versus Terran? That should be fun to watch.. But In PvZ, since you'd no longer have to build a fleet beacon to research speed, Zerg won't be able to engage with scourge. So the scout may replace the corsair in this matchup, and Zerg may be forced to build hydras. Here it doesn't seem to add much variety.. If we only change the Scouts's cost, build time or ground damage, we'd have to change them considerably, since you will always need to build a fleet beacon to make scouts useful. In that case it just becomes a unit that can be massed in the midgame. This could give Protoss another way to regain map control in PvZ after a Fast expansion, and we could even see air battles with devourers? Disruption web may be used by the initial corsairs to defend the natural against hydras, but it would still be a risk just like with sair/reaver. In PvT, scouts could complement a carrier switch. They'd come out earlier than Carriers because of lower gas cost, faster build time and higher speed. But they'd always be weak to goliaths and turrets, so it wouldn't get out of hand. I don't know about PvP. I guess you'd use Scouts to snipe Shuttles effectively, but it does weaken your ground army. Somehow I like the idea. That said, I agree that any sort of balance change would be inappropriate at this point. Broodwar is almost a classic like chess. But we do need more variety in pro games. Get some new maps pleeease.

The rules of chess (also known as the laws of chess) are rules governing the play of the game of chess. While the exact origins of chess are unclear, modern rules first took form during the Middle Ages. The rules continued to be slightly modified until the early 19th century, when they reached essentially their current form.
