If Blizzard were to be developing a HD remaster of Brood War, what are some of the things you would like to see implemented in it?
I think it's important to remember that part of what makes Brood War such a good, balanced game is the various quirks, engine limitations and restrictions it has. And that changing core mechanics such as singular building selection, 12 unit selection, or BW's AI pathing would fundamentally effect how the game is played. It would no longer be the same BW that the community has come to love over it's current 18 years of life.
Personally, some of the things I would like to see if a Remaster were to be in production are:
Gameplay being kept true to the original, with proper community debates around any possible changes that may be in consideration by Blizzard
A modernized Battle.net interface that retains all the functionality of the original in a clean and straight forward manner
Updated matchmaking support, clan support, ladder viewing with access to LAN and adding custom servers built in
Any non-game balance affecting glitches left as they are in the original game (stacking cannons, etc)
Easy to read battles with the same (albeit updated) clean, minimal effects as the original BW
Upgraded spectating tools with an excellent interface
Updated map editor; support for up to 12 players in custom maps, ability to do all of the things community tools like SCM Draft have been able to do
An easy way to port SC:BW Melee and UMS maps over to the remaster, including all triggers and the like
-----
I would greatly appreciate if the TL moderators could remain vigilant and clean up derailed, non-constructive discussions that may occur in this thread(instead of locking it) so that we as a community can sort out what we would like to see from a HD remaster of Brood War. It is my hope that Blizzard would take this valuable community driven feedback into deep consideration should they in fact be developing a remaster.
With that being said, please do not devolve the discussion into another SC2 vs BW thread!
I think it'd be a better idea to wait until the end of September before discussing this again. We'll find out whether or not this is a false rumor or a confirmed thing soon.
For me, I hope they will add auto tournaments/auto matchmaking and web profiles for your game stats like they did in SC2. But realistically I think they will just upgrade it to work on high resolutions officially and letting you display the classics games you are playing on the b.net friend list
Native support for ICCUP and especially Fish would be grand. Without proper Fish support koreans are more likely to stay with the original BW+Fish setup.

Why would koreans stick to fish if BW HD has a new and improved laddering system?

Especially considering that many of them are not too fond of Fish in general.

I thought it was pretty much confirmed for September already?? I'm aware that this is Blizzard, which doesn't have the best consistency in terms of delivery dates, and does drop projects at times, but I thought that SC:BW:HD was officially announced by them??
The rumors may have claimed a September announcement, but all the obvious opportunities for such an announcement have passed. There was no announcement at the ASL finals. There was an article claiming that it would be announced at WCS Copa America, but that didn't happen. At this point, the announcement will either happen out of nowhere during the next two weeks or we'll see it at Blizzcon. Considering the rumors about a Diablo 2 HD remaster announcement possibly incoming at Blizzcon, it would make sense for Blizzard to bundle the two HD remaster announcements together then.
A remaster hasn't been officially announced as of yet. A Korean news site reported Blizzard was to be remastering Brood War and that it would be announced in September but as of yet nothing concrete has surfaced. There are a handful of job postings that have gone up on Blizzard's website for classic games though, leading to more speculation. People are wondering if the announcement has been pushed to Blizzcon due to Blizzard's habit of taking their time or if it's actually non-existent and just a bunch of hype. Either way, having a consolidated resource of feedback regarding this may encourage the idea of a remaster at Blizzard if it's not already in production. And just knowing exactly what the community wants to see ahead of time would make it clear to Blizzard what we want from it. I think if not soon, one of these days they will do it for sure.

That and better support for newer OSes.
It doesn't need anything else. No "observing tools" which make games unfun to watch or unnecessary stuff.
I don't see how adding "observing tools" would be that terrible.
I would also like to see more control over replays (rewind, skip, etc.).
I don't want to see what is being built, how many units/minerals etc a player has. It takes away from the excitement when the observer suddenly finds a group of units there which turn a game around/defend a deadly push.

I agree with this somewhat... for observers (tournaments, progames, etc.) I wouldn't want this feature on. Seeing the supply vs supply kind of makes the fights less exciting when you eye it up and already have the preconception that one side is going into the fight with an advantage as opposed to having no idea who has the supply advantage. Pro games in Brood War have that glamour where fights and games can look close even when they actually aren't, and it makes it so fun to spectate.
But I still feel like this feature should be in the game. I'd use it a ton for replays... and to improve. I think it'd be a big mistake to not have it.

Why not have those observing tools only be available in replays and not in live games?
Some of the basic modern observing tools can just be put in with the option for the observer to not use them.
Unfortunately, it would probably trend that an attractive UI observer tool would just get used in tournament play. We already have the observing tools with various launchers (you can have full unit count, and I don't know what lovetv used but I feel like she had a hack for seeing production in live games, at least if selecting the building) but they are a bit clunky. Many korean casts had the very basis supply count, minerals, and vespene gas counter that I don't think detracted from the game any.
No brood war fan really wants to hear a caster say in a pvt "protoss has exactly 6 templar! We see 3 in the shuttle and 3 in the middle of the army, let's get ready for storms!". There's some magic about watching the battle unfold a little bit blind -- not knowing what is in the shuttle, and maybe seeing only a couple templar so you don't know if it's going to be like 2 storms coming down or 8. But if you make a visually appealing unit counter tab, eventually everyone will use it.
anyways, I think 1) auto matchmaking 2) make stuff work with windows 7/windows 10/any port forwarding shenanigans 3) more replay tools (rewind, time skip)
and people haven't liked when I said this before but 4) money is spent when the order to spend money is issued. refunded if unable to execute.
I think that is worth a change to help lower skilled players.
Needs to be a choice between classic mode or new mode. Both have HD graphics and resolution changes but new mode has MBS and a higher unit select limit.New mode will be great for the folks who do UMS and those fastest possible maps.

Because of LAN latency. BNET latency is horrible. If Blizzard manages to have a improved latency everyone might switch though.
