I'm trying to remember what name I played under when we played quite regularly...this was probably like 08/09?

I think the only legitimate A+ player circa 2009/2010 was Idra, who was an exception in many ways, having reached A+ status, without the overall incestuous vibe the whole ladder had at the time with a lot of the players being very selective with their opponents.

Yeah really judging a players rank meant looking at the match history, where mondragon etc would doge koreans, idra and white ra wouldnt which was always impressive at the time
Do you guys think in 5 years there will be new players becoming pros in SC:R? That's what we need in order for the competitive foreign scene to survive.
Adelscott played in a TLC back in 2015 and ClouD (and Nyoken?) played in BW Reunion tournament back in end of 2014. TT1 has been around for what, 1-2 years now and Testie has been playing on sb for a bit now afaik. Not sure about the rest but is Legionnaire really coming back?

Wut, i've been playing since January/February (not counting the BW reunion tourney). Just started playing 2 weeks ago after a 3 month break.. and that was only because i had the remastered beta :D.

Could've swore you were playing earlier than that. Either way, we can round 8 months to a year

But i dont think a lot of oldschool players have ever stuck around for a long period of time, maybe only arcneon? Or koget if you consider him oldschool. Most people play on and off, i personally got tired of grinding for no reason after ~2 months and stopped playing. We don't really have an incentive to stick around when there's no tourneys =/.
Brat_OK actually started streaming quite a while ago with SC2. I'm pretty sure he broke through a couple of qualis as well. Glad to see he still has passion for the genre

Sounds like you weren't having fun then. Stop grinding, start UMSing, BGH etc... unless you hate all that then I have no solution for you XD Also, there are tourneys like defilers which are constantly running afaik. There's also Have At You atm and ESL weekly starting soon. There might be more to come, who knows.

Na i've always like playing 1v1 but it feels like a waste of time when you have no goal. Never been a big weekly cup guy (not even in SC2), they take so long to finish. I've always been more of a big tourney guy, say a TSL or offline lan . The dream would be to have BW added to the WCS circuit, not sure how feasible that would be for Blizzard tho.

There really weren't any big tournaments or anything, obviously nothing comparable to a WCG or TSL, so coming back to grind wasn't really too appealing. Also Brood War has always been a community driven game, so it was hard to come back after SC2 came out and always have a friends list full of offline people that you had played the game with for years. Remastered has changed that (look at X17, it's full of old names) so it's a really exciting time to talk with old friends, play games with each other, etc. Obviously we all love the game but don't underestimate the community aspect of it and having your old friends online gaming with you, it makes it so much more fun to play
On August 17 2017 15:02 prOxi.swAMi wrote: What is your source that Testie is playing? I haven't seen anything...
I haven't seen him play, but I've seen him type (on X17). No impostor would write this way, it's definitely him. So he's clearly back, at the very least to that limited extent so far.
Testie is streaming alot, but he plays HoN most of the time, he plays a few BW games now and then tho. Doubt he will leave HoN to play BW more seriously.
On August 17 2017 15:02 prOxi.swAMi wrote: What is your source that Testie is playing? I haven't seen anything...
He streams BW pretty regularly when he's not playing HoN. His stream is usually like "Smashing Koreans on Fish" or something like that. I played him on ICCup not too long ago and on ICCup you can see he has pretty recent matches.

people have tinted glasses looking back, as if you weren't A-/A then you were bad.
pretty sure during 2008/09/10 I could count on two hands the number of foreigners who were consistently playing and staying at A-. I remember watching Ret's push for A and it was a huge deal
The biggest issue is that people tend to use TSL seasons as a good measure of who could get A-, when the truth is that the rankings were massively inflated due to the huge influx of foreigners mass gaming. The competitive nature of the TSL ladder seasons also meant that there was an increased incentive to dodge Koreans.
Yes, when iccup was played by Koreans only, A- was a more accurate rank for top foreigners, and only the top5 or so guys being legit A players on iccup.

Serious question, do you not know who I was in BW or not remember me? Or are you just offended or think you need to dish it back at me? Because I actually was pretty damn good at this game when I played.
You have so much going for you, particularly in this community. Most people who put as much effort into the game as I did have gotten a lot of recognition for it in some form, and that definitely includes you. I kinda faded into oblivion because I never really accomplished concrete anything and moved to poker instead.
Anyways if you don't remember me I was liquid.venice and we played quite a bit back then. It's kinda bullshit to act like I wasn't good.

you want to talk about kind of bullshit? it's your ass calling me out for not being good? I won a fucking WCG and qualified / competed in everything that marked you as a top non korean. I also was one of the few to actually get A rank outside of korea during non TSL times.
I expect more from you because you were actually there. So when you talk like a dumb ass it bothers me more than just the random TL people who constantly talk shit as if they were there.

Did I shit post back then? I don't really feel like I did much.. I've looked back on old posts and I could kinda be a dick but I don't think my shit posting was all that bad.
You won a WCG? See, like, I didn't even know that. (I may have heard it at one point and then forgot about it, though). Like I said, from my perspective, all I know is that you got a lot better after I quit... which is what I said. I wasn't actually there at these times. That isn't the incontrol I knew in bw. The one I knew and played with was "one of the better foreigners" but not much more than that. So when I hear you brought itno the conversation as an old top foreigner, I assumed it is more because you are a known personality.
I am glad you cleared it up. I am not being sarcastic, that's really impressive man. I apologize for how I acted, I don't know why I was shitty.

That's not really true, though. The overall consesus (as far as I recall) was that EU was stronger than NA. However, the US was still a pretty strong nation. Take for instance the WGTour World Cup II in 2007 (http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft/WGTour_World_Cup_Season_2). The US got knocked out by the winner of the entire tournament and with smaller margins than in the Grand Finals. I haven't gotten into details, though, whether there were more to the story than the numbers.
I do see that you're pointing out that it's still very well done to win such a tournament, but I still feel it's a pretty damn strong achievement. Not debating the US was on par with f.ex. Poland and such, but still...

The US had some pretty strong players throughout the years. Some of them were REALLY good and even made it to Korea to play the game. People like Froz, Assem, Nony and Idra were all really skilled and could keep up with anyone at their peak. I still think the US was slightly behind the other nations.
Incontrol got into drama again. Every time he appears in BW forum he gets flamed hard for not being here since release SC2. I think let's forget past. This is "different" game, it's Remastered and time will tell who will conquer top spots.
Y'all really pulling out the measuring tape here. Every top foreigner at the time could take a series from another top foreigner anywhere in the world right? You make it sound like its easy to rank players/nations like there was this obvious order when theirs not.

Slightly behind because of lack of players I'd say. But no one else can say they had the white hope Idra.

Sure but theres still favorites. I wouldnt throw anyone good odds beating Idra in a bo anything near the release of Sc2 or even Nony for that matter. But in general id say yes anything could happen.

It's only because there were nation wars back then so we could know which country had the best line ups and it's true that at least back when I played (I quit in 2006) USA was not weak but not that strong either. I remember we had very good results in those and Sweden and Poland were quite tough too, It was long ago so I'm not too sure of the rankings.
Also Geoff you seem to have held a grudge against me all this time from listening to the cast 3 days ago and well I'm aware I can be quite a dick at time, used to be much worse than I am now but I'm aware of it and It's probably always going to be a work in progress and hopefully we can get along better this time around.
i think USA probably most bipolar BW nation. not that many players who were skilled enough to be internationaly competitive, but the players who were able to compete had a lot of talent.
this probably goes in hand with just how big the country is geographically as opposed to a country with a concentrated population like korea or sweden.
USA USA USA
(also is it fair to compare one country with EU region which is comprised of several concentrated countries and languages?)
Well i have heard that Fenix and Castro from Perú want to comeback, Dinot was also playing a lot a couple of months ago, even participated at Filthy cups weekly tours.
And one funny thing is that playing on ladder 2 days ago i got matched with a guy with the nick "IdrA" on the map Nostalgia, i asked the guy if he was the real Idra or a Fake one, he replied he was the real one, but i'm not sure, i speedling rushed him, and he left, typing "gg". The real IdrA would have said something like "you are good at making zerglings, very useful talent toi have".
Idra is not coming back to BW. I'm pretty sure it was stated somewhere? He declined his invitation to the launch event because he's concentrating on his studies and I doubt he wants to be in the spotlight again.

Hahahaha. Poor iNcontroL. For whatever it's worth, I'm nostalgic for the days of op tl-west when strong foreigners would play games with super scrubs. It was a tighter knit community back then, I guess. I got to play with a lot of cool people I was no where near the skill level of. Ironically it was usually easier to beat the super strong players than the regular pretty good players, because the super strong players would off-race and turbo newbie drop you, and then you'd blind counter them Normal good players try-hard the hell out of you and make you cry.

Nation wars were so much fun back then. In my opinion Germany and Poland were the top tier in NWs because they had such strong 2v2 teams. After those two, the strength of other nations varied based on who was able to show up. Sweden, Canada, USA, France, Russia and Ukraine were all competitive with their strongest lineups. The bigger nations also had B teams which were more than decent.

I miss playing against Yan. He was cheesy and always fun to play against!

I heard alot or the best Broodwar 2v2 players are switching to 1v1 because they claim 2v2 is getting less popular on SCR. Babo and Yan have been grinding 1v1. I think Babo switched to playing mostly1v1, maybe Yan too. I think it is good for them. And supposedly the best 2v2 players can hold their own in mirror matchups like ZvZ PvP TvT. So if you ever get a chance watch Babo play ZvZ or Yan play PvP. They can hold their own at least some of the time.

Well there isn't a 2v2 ladder on Blizzard's servers so what can you do.
I'm really hoping there will still be a 2v2 scene in this game though.
And by the way the best 2v2 players were always competitive in 1v1, and not only in mirror matchups.
Gotta say it's also been a blast watching some of the top level SC2 players come over to BW as new players and learn as they go. I've watched Demuslim quite a bit, he is picking it up quickly and was playing super well today, even though his first day was only a couple days ago. Pig has also seemed to improve every single time I've tuned in. Just an awesome time to be a BW player and/or viewer right now

Played against him quite a bit and never remember much cheesy play ( in 2v2 at least ) -o-;

There was a blue post on b.net forums a few days ago confirming that 2v2 ladder is definitely coming soon(tm).
No timeline, but basically seemed like they'd start working on it once 1v1 ladder was working properly.

Wow that is cool Dreiven is back. I was reading up on the old pro Poland players and he and Draco sounded like they were possibly the best. Hope Trutacz and Bonyth run into them when they aren't rusty any more. You think Bonyth was similar skill to them back in the day? I heard Bonyth one of the best players of the foreigners today.

Bonyth is probably the best non-kroean Protoss nowadays, but he was a tad behind Dreiven / Mistrz / Draco, who were the top3 protosses in Poland way back when. There were a lot of other great P's like Gohan, Yayba etc. Wiget, Pako, sYs, Fizban were also super solid, but a loooong time ago
Oh wow Mister Z, I probably haven't thought of that name in 8 years. So many players. Just shows the potential for growth when that many foreigners were still playing near the release of SC2.
Wouldnt surprise me anyway, Spades is garbage, same as Lastshadow for hacking/abuse all the time.
Hopefully they wont be welcomed back into BW:R either
And as for TT1, he's proven time and again he's always been a legit player w/o hacks to offset the time he did hack or whatever anyway. You don't see people still crucifying Haypro for the couple games he hacked in either do you?(which as best as i can remember was just autosplit cause of obs features he was using the hack for or something) but still.
I may have run into Testie on the ladder today. I don't have any way to confirm, but he's 24-6 with a rating of 2038 playing random and is currently 140th on global, and he's the only person named Testie on the ladder. Played all the games today.

Not sure if sarcastic, but i thought we agree'd you were gonna pay me with seminal fluids as to impregnant females to breed future generations of Canadian protoss gods?
There is cheating you do as a kid like bending the rules to your own benefit and then there's hacking. Anyone over 16 (I'm inclined to say over 12, but let's give immaturity some room) who hacks or stream cheats like Jaehoon did is just a pathetic individual in my book. I don't even care about the reason if you're aware you did it. Typical hacker
Fayth was rather known when he played a good bit. I would agree though, he was highly known for DT dropping a ton. I think what was worse was knowing that he would DT drop and still losing the game to him.

Nope won't remove him. He went inactive and now he is playing again. That is the whole point of this thread. And he was a legend at 2v2 so props to him playing 1v1. And majority of his career he was Known as a Canadian.
For those who said they've never heard of FroZ! he was the best foreign Terran back in the early 2000s and was incredibly fast. Day[9] even said in one of his videos that FroZ! was by far one of the best back in the day in the US.
That said, I'm sure he would pick up pace in today's BW environment and would do extremely well.
I've also noticed a lot of old school notable players from wayyy back... even though they may not have been "pro" like in a Korean pro league etc

He's Korean. He lives in Korea... Ok do whatever you want. Like those people who are categorizing me as a foreigner.
Anyone know what happend to 3wD.Christian aka Beast from Buglaria? Out all the Terran's I've played, Androide and Christian were always the hardest opponents.

The Bulgarian Technics says he thinks Lamer played a few games on LRM)Lamer ID. And Technics says he heard Beast is playing a little on an ID but he doesn't know which one. It's pretty exciting.
