I've updated an old project of mine to work with SC:Remastered as I try to get back into Brood War. It's called BWMetaAI. It's basically an AI that tries to follow a human metagame instead of silly 12 zealot all-ins nearly every game.
This is awesome thank you! I'll give it a try tonight for sure. I'm learning to play BW properly and have been playing quite a bit against the AI for the sake of perfecting my execution of build orders but it kinda sucks just leaving the game after 5-10 minutes because the CPU is such shit that it would be a waste of time otherwise haha
damn. impressive. it will be fun for offline practice and just warming up. by the way, will you update it so that the AI doesn't do stupid things like storming a single zergling?

There are plenty of bots that try to be as good as possible, but this isn't one of them. Go to http://www.sscaitournament.com/ to find bots that are harder to get running, but once they are, they will stomp you.
One thing that would be a huge improvement over the standard AI is if it actually gave up before being eliminated. I hate that so much.
I replace the patch_rq.mpq with the new BW Meta AI. But the problem is that the Blizzard App (that name *shudder*) keeps forcing me to update the game before playing. I've tried to manually launch the game form the folder, but it just redirects me to the app.
Because it cannot launch the game unless it is updated, I am unable to try out the meta AI. (I disabled autopatch and it only displays an Update button instead of Play on the launcher)
I think you just have to let the game update to latest patch first, then you can try replacing the patch_rq.mpq after that point. Other than that, try seeing if temporarily going offline (turn off wifi and/or unplugging ethernet) and launching does anything different. I'll try it out for myself in a bit.
EDIT: I was able to get it to work offline, but the App will attempt to patch the mpq file if you go back online and quit the game.

how come it's hard to get running? Also, do these more advanced AI follow standard build orders? that would be so cool.

For me, it works to open the Blizzard app, run any updates, and once the play button appears I replace the patch MPQ and then hit play.
BWAPI is more difficult to get set up because it requires running multiple instances of StarCraft. It takes control of the game engine in the same way that human would, so you actually have to join a multiplayer game against one of the AIs running on another machine/VM or use some hack that allows multiple instances to run simultaneously on the same machine.

funny, this AI plays better than many humans. could you also include a version that focuses on macro/standard play? no all in builds like 5 pool from the AI. this is to generally create longer games with multiple expos
this is really what the community needs right now. bwapi thing needs years before it can be something of use, its just too damn hard to figure out for new players and nobody's bothering to make ease of use accessible with all the programers in that community

Just leave the when you think you've won and don't want to play it out to the end.
Hi Jncraton, thx for this amazing project.. In fact i hink that provide a good environmet to learn timmings for the newer players.. if i can give you a suggestion , maybe a possbility to choose what Build will follow the IA
Awesome, this is great for beginners or even people just trying to get back into the swing of things after a long time, thanks for this! Always love seeing BW AI projects, the BW AI Tournament's are cool too.
No idea, but it isn't very good. Definitely much worse than a very rusty human player. It should be more than a challenge for truly new players, though.

I included cheesy builds to give players a reason to scout early. I expect things like 12 Nexus and 14 CC to be completely viable against this AI most of the time, but I wanted to encourage players to get in the habit of checking what their opponent is doing instead of just choosing a plan before the game and sticking with it no matter what. With that said, it wouldn't be too difficult to create a separate release that does not include cheesy builds. I may do that if I have a chance.
If you're fairly tech savvy, you can follow the instructions here to build the mod from source:
This is definitely possible, but it has to happen outside of the game unless I want to build a much more complicated mod. If you're able to build the project from source, you can easily delete all of the builds except the one you are interested in playing against and then rebuild the project. I used to do this regularly to practice against particular build orders.

Love this, i played a few games won them all, this meaning the AI is right now between (Easy & Normal) as i am D+ C- TOPS, really cool thing thanks.
Any posibility you could in a near future give us scaleable dificulty? or some way to create a customized patch_rt file with scait bwapi etc?
Thanks! What are you looking in terms of scalable difficulty and/or customization? I usually just play vs 2 or 3 of these to make things more challenging.
playing with 2 or 3 of these is definitely better than playing vs built in AI, the built in just bum rushes you all together, this one the AI attacks one at a time but with a pretty scary set of units so it's easier to survive playing a normal style instead of one tailored to surviving 3 12 zeal rushes

for once and this might be crazy to ask... is there any way to modify the .mpq file as you just di to load SSCAIT scripts? they come with a .dll and the script itself, i am sure you have seen them, it would be awesome if you could create for us a small app that can help us load this into game also.

SSCAIT scripts require BWAPI which won't currently work on 1.20 AFAIK. That's because they're not written in the game's native AI script language, and instead made from ground up.

Unfortunate that blizzard app repatches it every time you play, meaning you must replace the patch every time, but I still enjoy some variability in my games against the AI (the only games I win since I suck)
I think some of the timings could be made to be tighter, I will see how my experience goes with my other builds. In my game, a PvT, the AI went with 2 rax pressure to start, which granted did catch me offguard and killed probably ~5 of my probes. I was worried about his followup since my economy was so damaged, however, when I got 2 goons over, he had just gotten an expansion that only had 1 scv. I attacked it and nothing came to defend it, and when I got into his base he still hadn't finished his factory. Took him quite a while to get up to his factory, instead of expanded first? Either way, it was pretty easy to win with just goons despite using my first two. I see how he was transitioning into mid game play, and understand that you made it to do an opening and then transition into a different "mode" for midgame play, but it could have transitioned better.
Even so, I might next time just not attack it and let it build away and see how it handles midgame, and hopefully get some good practice that way of midgame PvT
You can quickly and easily play 1v1 against this without the need to do any complex patching. Just load up a UMS game on these maps and you should be all set. I'm very inexperienced with both UMS and EUD triggers, so let me know if this doesn't work for you.

That's very helpful feedback. Thanks! It is hard to get all of the transitions to work properly. It sounds like the AI went BBS, which is pretty all-in, so I'm not surprised that it wasn't much of a challenge after the initial attack. It should have had several marines back home, though. I'll look into this.
It crashes my SC after mid game, tried two times. I like what you doing but AI with no money (without cheating) is pretty super duper easy whatever he does.
Thank you for the jobs! The EUD maps is still works on patch 1.23. All you need is just put EUD maps into any maps' folder and run the game. Adjust game setting on ' use map setting ' then you will enjoy it. I leave this message because I want make it simpler for some new comers. At least I get lost in the first place.
