Hi, Seeing the thread about what we can do to improve Starcraft, I came to the conclusion that new blood is essential. But it's really hard to show how awesome the game is to newbies. It's even harder to get them to play a few games. Hence this thread:
1) Can you guys suggest some awesome Remastered games with English commentary that beginners can appreciate? It has to be Remastered and it must be an exciting game/series.
2) I'd love some UMS maps to get them started. Previously we played Nazy defence, Special Forces, and those were highly appreciated. Please post them as well as any other ones you enjoyed.
Hopefully we can have a list that people can share and use.

Hey there,
I am a pretty new player myself only having played since a few days before remastered came out. I watched the Remastered Launch for the foreign scene on twitch vods and it seemed like so much fun I instantly bought in. I hope that other people try out the game for maybe the first time and fall in love with it like I did. go.twitch.tv
The ASL matches have been great fun for me to watch and follow!
As for the UMS maps I really enjoy the 2 micro maps I've tried from this page wiki.teamliquid.net

this is a great idea. What helped me the most when I first started was watching Build order videos of standard openers. I can't seem to find it, but it was a video from an old school player who walked you through Flash's TvZ. I liked having the audio, so I could listen to the build order while I ran.

What's crucial is to have people find training partners on their own skill level and let them have fun improving without getting devastating losses against good players that played the game for years. Appreciate noob starcraft when you interact with these new players as everyone once started out. Even in games with poor micro/macro there is a lot of tension and strategy to appreciate. Tell this to the players so they don't get the feeling they will never improve. Also create clans, fun leagues, improvised tournaments or just custom games (like 8 player FFA/racewar) that everyone is supposed to enjoy.

Find some friends and do compstomp (allied vs computer AI), that's how i got into bw 19 years ago. Can even do an island map, so you can have long games.

The games suggested above are sweet. Anything else? Some other UMS maps?

Poker Defense (spare us all the Sato drama) and Desert Strike are both fun and pretty quick to learn

My favorite UMS are Diplomacy Gold 7.7 and Diplo Infinity. They can be played completely casually, just to learn unit control/macro, but they also have competitive communities. Can be played with any number of people - free for all or with teams.
If you want to learn more of the real game, BGH is a good stepping stone to 1v1/team melee. Wouldn't recommend becoming one of the people who ONLY play BGH though.

Sero, what was that map Me, You, Monkey, Munkie and DNH used to play? I know it was Snipers but was there any other name for it?

nothing is better for new players to get addicted than playing 3v3 4v4 on hunters, making 3 units and seeing how your slightly more experience teammate wrecks havoc with 2 groups of mnm. Get them experience tears and joy! PS. in 1999 it took me 2 such games to get hooked
|
I've been playing nothing but Survival in Mars and Guardians of Sky. Both are defense maps that are pretty challenging. 3v3 BGH/Hunters has been another part of my SC diet.

Hmm, I double posted by accident. Sorry about that. I'm drunk and don't know how to delete this post sorry.

I loved playing 'A day at school' UMS back in the day. That's a more older UMS for the fans out there. Other ones would be Tarpit and HGMA Defense.
I loved playing those two games back in the day. Other maps would be Marine Defense, Diablo RPG, evolves/Golems and other great UMS game that are out there.
HGMA Defense would have to be my favoruite though. Not sure how many people still play it at the moment.

As others have said, 3v3 Hunters or BGH is the absolute best way to learn quickly. Then you watch pro VODs to get good.
1. Play 3v3 2. Lose because you suck 3. Watch replay, see what other team does 4. Repeat 1
After you can win a few games being a helpful noob teammate, now you can work on your build order.
5. Look up build orders, write them down, practice vs. comp 6. Play 1v1/2v2/3v3 games vs real people to perfect build orders and transitions 7. Watch pro VODs 8. Repeat from 5
That's the winrar sauce. Don't bother moving past #4 until you can secure a few wins by studying your own reps.
