I was wondering if many of us have some shared fond memories of BW. Or simply something specific to you, that you'd want to share? Stuff that makes us love the game.
One such memory would have to be when we kept losing our CDs, but still wanted to play on LAN. So we'd have like 1 CD to share on 4-5 guys, where one would fire up BW, get to the Multiplayer-thingy, then the next and the next until the last one had the CD and made the game.
And of course, sometime we'd forget that we didn't have the CD, made it crash, then ran to the next room (dormitory) to get the CD back.
Maybe not really the most fun, but it was one of those things that made BW what it is. Like how retarded the Dragoons are. And listening to your friend scream in frustration when coming over, due to a Dragoon stuck on his ramp.

I loved the days of just sitting in chat and chilling out with the other users. The quiz bot was very fun to. I loved playing team games against bots/other players. Most of the games I played where UMS though.
A day at school, Tarpit D, evolves. A lot of fond memories there. I still remember my CD key number as well. Had to use it so many times to log onto the Battle.net forums back in the day.
|
I still remember being amazed when my buddy who introduced me to SC explained me Lurkers the first time. It made me want to play Zerg.
|
My best memory was when I was still in the "only defend, too afraid to ever attack" phase, I was like 12 years old, and I would have this epic 4x4 game on hunters on a pirated server. Everyone was really bad and barely attacked, so the game was well over 30 minutes at this point, but it felt intense as heck. Nobody ever went into late game units such as defilers, except this one guy who did try to use them, and everyone felt like they were beyond broken. This went on for another few minutes, when I had a knock on my door - my friends said they hadn't seen me outside in almost a week, and asked if I wanted to come out to hang out. I used to go out every single day until BW came into my life. I had to mix the two from there on out.

Watching Proleague in 360p at an inconvenient time of the day and still enjoying it a shit ton. Ridiculous ceremonies, cheap metal music between matches, Korean commentators doing their thing, absolute nonames causing major upsets, snipe tactics, wacky maps, death zooms, SKT zergs, KT playoff zergs, all-kills, reverse all-kills, rooting for Airforce ACE and so on, and so on, and so on. I want that back.

I want that back. I feel that too, but I can't help but also feel that what I really want back is how young I was when all of this was happening. I can't just wake up at 5:00 AM on a weekday to watch Brood War anymore, or stay up until 3:00 AM, 1-3 times a week. Just not feasible.
Don't get me wrong, the content itself was fantastic too. I want it back as well, and I'm super glad that ASL is stepping up heavily. But, ASL can't completely fill the gap.
I am writing this at 5:00 AM tbh lol.

Every time I connected to battle.net via dial-up in 98-99 I would shout my irl friend's real name in the lobby to see if he was there, much to his embarrassment.
I had no idea about friends lists or /w at that point.
|
Playing 3v3, 4v4, (or own made up game called Pentagon for when we had 5 people), or even FFA on random blizzard maps. 3v3 on Close Encounters is a classic.
|
I'm not completely sure about this since it was back in 98, but didn't SC not have b.net at the beginning? Because I remember that we kinda had to connect with our modem to another friends modem to play online. Could be wrong though since this was our first online game after Red Alert.
Also, coming from a small village that was known in the national scene because we had some of the best, including the best for quite some time, BW players in the country was kinda nice

2005-6ish. I was at uni and me and my friends play bw already but on a very noob level. for some reason, I stumbled upon the korean gaming scene and kept it from my friend, hehehe. So after a week or so of binge watching, I became BW God! APM was still 100ish and still noob strategy, but at least I was cleaner with my builds and have a more definite strategy in mind. Two specific moments of glory.
1. After some notable 4v4 games, the previous best challenged me to a 1v1. I was secretly hoping for this. Best of 5 games, 3-0. I remember it like it was yesterday. Game 1, I play Protoss vs. Terran, Destination. Mass Gate harass transition to DT. It was brutal. Game 2, FS, I play zerg he plays terran still. Mass hydras to lurkers (the only time mass hydras vs terran works lol). It was a long battle but i contained him to his main and nat at 11, and eventually finished him with Ultraling. Game 3, he was furious already, and said I was map cheating. So we played BGH, I played terran (yeah, show off right) while he played his "real best race" Zerg. Ok whatevs. I camp with simcity bunker barracks and 2 tanks and then mass cloaked wraiths. Poor thing's overlord were orgying in a corner, so it was a genocide and his hydras and mutas looked silly vs. my cloaked wraiths. The game ended by me hunting for his hidden gas, that motherfucker. Needless to say, friendship over lol.
2. Money maps (I dunnot what they were called, but one where minerals were next to base and you can have 9999999 units). I had way more highest tier techs faster than anyone. So while they were just teching to mutas or wraiths, I already had 1 or 2 control groups of Carriers/Guardians/BCs.
That's my 15 second of BW glory!

My school was like 40min by bus away from home, so would have to wake up quite early for 8am class. It was a time when kids didn't have cellphones yet. So imagine me, at like 7:15am calling my friend's house, asking his mom to let me speak to him. Then came the regular question: - Hey, how do you feel about going to school today? - Shitty... fuck school - Ok, so 8am at the PC club. And then all day nonstop starcraft, cs, and some other silly games. I was scolded by my teachers, got an official reprimand that got hanged in school corridors. Parents were super mad when they found out i skipped HALF classes of a whole semester, but if I had the choice again, without blinking i'd do the same. Amazing experienced, friendships, rivalries etc.
It was then (like 2001~2002) we found out about pro scene. SKY OSL was the first for me, made such a huge impression. Been on and off following pro scene since.

I mostly have neutral or negative memories :/ Probably, because most of my BW time was just 1v1 ladder, countless games, and I was bad at it, and insecure as a persone, too; speaking of that, BW did help me grow personally, or at least I think so. The fondest were actually playing 1v1 or BGHs with my on-line friends, some of them were so very nice that they still occupy a place in my heart. Sadly, I won't hear from them again. Oh, and the single player campaigns...
|
I used to play with my friend on 56k modem. We used up two phone lines so we could talk on phone while playing and coordinate our attacks. We mostly played 3v3 or 4v4 BGH... sometimes we'd be assholes and unally our teammates and try to wipe out everybody. Good times...

I remember my transition from b.net games to iccup in late 2006 or early 2007, probably was like season 2 or 3 of iccup. I was 12, and thought I was hot shit, played a zvp. Never had seen a forge expand in my life, blew my fucking mind that someone could do that. Lost like 40 zerglings to a single dark templar, couldnt even secure my natural base.
I also remember a few months later being deep DEEP into a loss streak, something along the lines of 3-50, and getting so frustrated at probe harassment/gas steal, that I immediately left the game the second a probe got into my base, rushed to teamliquid and made a thread screaming about how they were rigged.
The moments broodwar broke me, I remember those.

Sniping hackers/abusers in battle.net ladder back in (02-03?) on "Faster" speed. Those were the days... Yan[GG]ua, J.Lo, etc

I have fond memories of Proxy 2gating in the middle of the map, building pylon's in the choke on tau cross to block workers, stealing terran gas and proxy shield battery rush's vs Zerg, so glorious, fond memories....

i liked playing team melee with Pez, noname, skyline, Sziky and vorti etc. We also watched pro replays on 1x speed and analized them till late night until i slept while sitting.

I was 5 and had just peed in bed. Usually my dad is up late working, studying etc so I would get caught on the way to the laundry and be scolded. But this night he didn't notice me creep across the study towards the laundry. I got curious and went to see what he was doing after I changed pants. He was playing BW and his burning command center was floating in midair surrounded by lings. He wasn't mad that I peed my pants (or maybe he didn't notice), he just showed me what the game was instead. Not really BW but BW related memory I guess. Now dad and I are just awkard- too stoic and Korean to talk to each other. I kinda miss getting scolded by him and learning BW after.

When I was a student there was no wi-fi, we had lan cables passing through the windows of the residence so we could play Brood War lans. In winter we had the heater on full power because we couldn't close the windows. On was from 4th floor to 1st floor.

I remember starting all the way back in '97 with the shareware. I was 7 or 8 years old and my sister discovered it through a friend. Went through the four confederate campaign missions pretty quickly and tried my luck online. I quickly made a friend of my own called Samus_Aran. One of my most fond memories as a child was losing a ladder game to him, but he decided to let me win instead and just left. I couldn't believe that anyone would actually just.. let someone else win. Mind-boggling. He got the real game a few weeks before I did, as well as Brood War when it came out. Eventually lost touch as those things do.
Initially joined a clan called (gol) as Lion(gol). I don't think I ever saw another clanmate again after joining, so I quickly started my own clan, The Dark Terror Tigers (TDTT). After a ten year old-crush on one of the members of a clan called number 1 players (n1p), TDP was formed which actually got a lot of players in. People mostly played UMS and everyone sucked really, really badly. It was amazing to see someone show up with the (TDP) clan sometime in around 2008. Couldn't believe the clan stuck around that long given no one really knew each other all that well.
By 2005, a friend called erNci told me of the pro-gaming scene, and that there were two top players: BoXeR, which was number one, and NaDa, which was number two. Being the ever hipster and never having seen either of them player before, I started cheering for NaDa. Watching him beat Anytime on Tau Cross in the finals years later on stream was awesome. erNci told me there were two main sites for Starcraft: Teamliquid.net, and GosuGamers.net, and that the latter was superior. Naturally, I joined the events crew for the latter and went to three WCG events with my sister as press which was neat. Met Mondragon, Testie, Draco and co.
One of the most cool moments was in a group with Stork, Ex, and White-Ra. Given the placements of the other koreans in different groups, the winner of the group would have to face off with another Korean. The three were in a tie-break and Stork would start. He would beat Ex, then miraculously lose against White-Ra with some bullshit, hoping White-Ra would defeat Ex. Seeing through the plan, White-Ra lost to Ex on purpose himself. This went on for a few rounds until Stork just got too tired and decided to beat them both. Koreans would not top 3 this year.
For my first WCG in Monza, Italy, we stayed over at Shun's apartment in Monza, Italy. Shun had a pretty large apartment and decided to use the occasion to share it with, well, just about everyone. Every night it was a fight to actually get in to one of the beds. Every subsequent night, more people were invited and more people would be forced to sleep on the floor.
Each morning, we'd be served the same breakfast: Pre-packaged chocolate croissants and mandarins. Artosis, whom was also staying at the apartment, was always an incredibly happy face at the breakfast table no matter how little sleep he'd had, which to this day I do not understand. To get to the venue from Shun's apartment, there were two options: The car, which would take you there in about 30 minutes, or public transport, which would be about 3 hours. Note: It rained all. the. fucking. time.
That's about it for my Starcraft history. Still need to go to Korea sometime, which I'm hoping to do within the next two years. Would be a pretty awesome thing after 20 years of being involved in the game.

I remember bying a cheap copy of StarCraft from a friend in 8th grade, the game had just came out. I got the CD-key as well to install it. I guess he never played online, because I used the CD-key to play online and it was my first multiplayer experience. Had a blast playing 3v3 and 2v2 Hunters on my 56k dialup. Had to pay the bill myself since it cost a lot to be on the internet as much as I was at that time, took up my entire allowance. Then I forgot the game for like 10 years or so until I stumbled upon the korean pro scene through gosugamers.net, I was amazed people still played this game and obviously at a totally different level than I remembered way back. So I started playing again more seriously, got on Iccup and really got stuck. Never got amazing or anything, was around C level, but really obsessed with the game for a while.
Also remember me having a "clan" with this 13/14 year old called "sortof", he was tired of school but I said he should forget about pro career and focus on studies, but now I guess it worked out well for him anyway
I have very fond memories of following the pro scene in the good ol' days, betting on gosugamers and following different nation wars and such. Also torrenting all pro games I could get my hands on since there where no streams really back then.

Playing 2v2 with my brother on pgt/iccup all day long at christmas time.

i just remember late night chat/replay sessions

the best memories I have of bw were back in my middle school days. my friend and I would talk about 2v2 strategies all day at school and then go to each other's homes to execute those strategies. Looking back I realize that all our strats were the pinnacle of cheese but we thought we were so gosu for coming up with shit like that. team games with your best bud are the best.

In primary school I was a "prefect". All the task was, was leading a younger class to assemblies. Anywho, there was this one kid I was acquainted with that one day said "DSK! DSK! I made 100 battlecruisers yesterday!". Confused, I brushed it off but as the days rolled on he kept saying similar things. Eventually I went round his house to see what he was talking about. It was....so different. Coming from C&C95, RA95 and TotalA, it was wierd seeing three races that look completely different. The music, sounds and aesthtetic were so different . I remember being showed the unit reactions when select spamming which I thought cool/hilarious.
I borrowed the game from him one day. Upon seeing the intro I crapped myself, got scared and immediately uninstalled.
Think it was a few months after I found the demo for SC1 with a gaming mag. I installed it and loved it. Bought it and only played skirmish/SP (no internet). Didn't learn therr was a pro scene until 2005-7. Never followed it or played competively.

Once I played a 1v1 against a nemesis and beat them PvP with a 5 probe 5 supply gateway into zealot rush without making any more Probes than 5. And the guy raged and called me a map hacker. It was hilarious. My friend was obs-ing and said "he only beat you with 5 probes". And the guy I beat raged more and didn't believe it. It was the funniest 1v1 I ever played.
|
Definitely all the orga stuff I did.
The BW4eVeR cups, with Welpenhund casting back when that was more black magic fuckery than anything else.
Later on managing the mTw team and beating ToT for the third place in our final iCCL. Horror, infernal, pidgin, Gan, kAra, jae, Naruto, Darkgamer. Strongest single-nationality team ever assembled (foreigner obv).
Oh and of course the three DbBW LANs I attended. Shit those were the best. Even the Dutch and French players showed up to those...
All of the stuff that was before Skype. Everyone was on ICQ or MSN.
Made two kinda friendships almost 15 years ago that last to this day.

My favorite experiences while playing the game were always in a UMS called "Can You Stop 1 Unit?"
Six people would work together to kill extremely strong, individual units who would walk on a straight road from the left side of the map to the right. It required a lot of coordination and some wacky strats to cause as much damage as possible.
I played the UMS so much that I became an expert. I mostly played Terran for the OH-so-amazing feeling of timing a nuke to land on a unit as it walked by, which for some of the units was your only chance of killing them. Some of them had maximum shield that would instantly regenerate.
I still remember the thrill of telling one of my zerg teammates "Don't ensnare that zealot... I got this," flying my ghost down the map in a dropship, launching the nuke, and having it land at the perfect time as two full control groups of battlecruisers fired their Yamato cannons in unison. Everyone would always freak out in chat like I had saved the world.
In recent years, I've tried and failed to find the exact version of that map I loved, but it lives on as a collection of awesome memories.
|
I could never beat that map. I never got to be the 'one' unit player. Also, we always had a couple of people playing as the powerful unit. So there was actually 1-3 of them running around causing havoc.
I loved the strats and different units/abilities you had to use in that map.

NR 20 Fastest, 3v3 4v4 FREE BEER!!!!, strip ums, Evolves, CRASH RPG (or any RPG at that)..... This was my childhood from the day my older brother showed me this game on our family computer. I just remember booting up the pc during my summer breaks from school and loading up Limewire and SCBW in the morning, and next thing i know i turn around and see what was once Cartoon network playing is now Adult Swim. This is pretty much the only game where I can phase it out of my life then in a few days, months, years later i can pick it up again and have it feel like i never left.
|
playing 2v2 3v3 and 4v4 compstomps with friends on small LAN parties around 2000 - 2002. We were so fucking bad, but still enjoyed it a lot. Playing teamgames vs. each other was pretty epic. BW can be amazingly fun as long as the matchups are somewhat even.
