[Batoo]’Master of Vultures’ Jung Myung Hoon, “This time, I will win”
**Editor’s note: I was a little more interpretive of the answers that Fantasy gave instead of my usual word-for-word translation**
- It’s the second Finals in a row. ▲ I was not sure whether I will ever have a chance to be back at the finals stage. I prepared with the mindset that I will not miss this opportunity, and practiced really hard. I am glad to reap the fruits of the effort that I put into practicing. - You defeated Bisu, a formidable opponent. ▲ The map order was in my favor. But I don’t think the map order matters all that much when you play a player of Bisu’s caliber. I just prepared with the mindset that I would do my best in every game. There wasn’t much discomfort in practicing because we both agreed that the winner between the two of us will win. It was just hard to find practice partners because the team was on break. - You defeated Bisu 3-0 ▲ I had a good winning percentage during practice so I thought a 3-0 was possible if the games went the way I prepared. The games worked out even better than I had anticipated. - After Boxer and Nada, this is the 3rd time that a player has appeared in two consecutive finals. ▲ I am very happy because I really respect and love both of these forerunners. After the 2nd place finish last season, I thought about how Nal_rA achieved championship in the season following a 2nd place finish. I thought to myself “I’ll do the same thing” – I will not miss this opportunity. - Your reaction to carriers in game 1 was very good ▲ When I saw that he didn’t take his 3rd after his reaver came out, I was sure that he was going carriers. I was already prepared for such a build and I knew how to counter it. Bisu did exactly as I thought he would. - In game 2, you were in great danger from the speed-up shuttle. ▲ My build did not include engineering bay, so it was especially weak against speed shuttle. It was dangerous because Bisu used that strategy. Fortunately, I was able to react and defend because my scans revealed his strategy early on.
- Is the hidden expo something that Coach Choi (iloveOov) suggested? ▲ The coaches do not pay much attention when in-house affairs like this happen. I haven’t received any special suggestions or anything. I like to have these kinds of hidden expos – I think it’s coach Choi’s influence.
- You had a rough start in game 3. ▲ My build was not suitable for his build. It was bad when my tanks were taken out early, but I was luckily able to block his attack. I thought I lost because I lost so many SCVs but his build was pretty much all-in (which failed). So I was able to win in the end.
- You will be playing a zerg in the finals ▲When I look at the maps, it is easier for terran to defeat zerg than for protoss to beat zerg. Since I beat Bisu Hyung to get to the finals, I will take the championship on his behalf.
- Who do you want to play in the finals ▲ By.Hero would be easier to face but I want to face Jaedong because I would get more attention that way. I also think it’ll be better for my career to play Jaedong (not sure what he means here but basically he wants more hype and attention for himself)
- How did you practice ▲ Stork helped me practice like it was his own match(laugh). Jangbi helped me like it was his game despite his finals coming up too. But Best didn’t help me saying he has to practice at home. I looked desperately for him until just before coming here but he never helped me so I’m a little disappointed (laugh). Kal helped me the most because he played just like Bisu during practice. I want to say thank you to everyone who helped me practice.
- Why do you think the Six Dragons helped you practice ▲ Since my team was on break, I used my connections to contact all 6 dragons. Everyone agreed to help me, and I am very thankful for that. I think they were jealous of Bisu becoming the icon of Protoss by doing too well. (laugh)
- Any last words. ▲ I wasn’t able to say before but I want to say thank you to CJ’s Much and Movie, and MBCgame’s Jaehoon. I wasn’t able to celebrate openly after beating Bisu. I will celebrate openly after taking the championship. I found out that the location of the finals is in Pusan, my hometown, and it gave me strength. I hope that many people from Pusan will come watch.
- Why do you think the Six Dragons helped you practice ▲ Since my team was on break, I used my connections to contact all 6 dragons. Everyone agreed to help me, and I am very thankful for that. I think they were jealous of Bisu becoming the icon of Protoss by doing too well. (laugh)
I honestly cannot believe this result...I'll have to watch the VODs later. But in a way, I am happy for Fantasy: even after making last OSL finals, he got no respect around here. Guys, Fantasy doesn't suck! And his best MU is TvP!
▲ Stork helped me practice like it was his own match(laugh). Jangbi helped me like it was his game despite his finals coming up too. But Best didn’t help me saying he has to practice at home. Fantasy is good in TvP and TvT overall a good player , but some games he does suck pretty bad . I do respect him thought going toe to toe with a non choking Stork in the finals was pretty impressive even thought he was outclassed back then .

Hmm didn't Stork got to two OSL finals in a row even thought he lost them shouldn't he be mentioned with Nada and Boxer ? Or they mention just the players who've won at least 1 ?
I wouldnt say he was outclassed going 2-3 against a stork that didnt slump up and die though.
I really hope he wins this for the great terran race

Be careful what you wish for!
Well he will be remmebered if he wins against Jaedong and he will also be remembered if Jaedong rapes him silly using queens like their last encounter .
I'm surprised there was no mention of that lazy Wraith in game 2, which probably would have made defending the speed Shuttles a little easier if it had been remembered.

Even thought Fantasy made it look close Stork was in a pretty good position to take the series after he went 2 - 0 and even when fantasy somehow managed to make a comeback to 2 - 2 he was outclassed in the last game . Stork was outclassing everyone back then a pretty good performance in all leagues and WCG Korea .
man, I feel bad for bisu, I mean, he had little options for practice partners, I'm sure flash said "no" because he is at the same clan as fantasy, only Leta or Hwasin (?!) left...but poor kido was on his own and got raped.
Well it kind of makes sense that if even the SKT coaches don't interfere in these matchups (ie: the question about the hidden expansion) the players would also avoid to "take sides". Best probably just didn't want to create tension in the team (since he probably understands Bisu's play extremely well, being a fellow SKT toss).
How great of Kal to bother playing in Bisu's style to help Fantasy though.
That being said i'm definitely not a fantasy fan, and I hope he'll be crushed by Jaedong in the next round (or by.hero, who knows what can happen...).
On March 21 2009 05:05 spydernoob wrote: odd that stork helped fantasy as i thought stork loved bisu... could def see jangbi wanting to help fantasy as best he could though.
Admiration and envy are oftentimes closely related, it´s not so odd Stork would help Fantasy. Best on the other hand seems very loyal to Bisu hehe. But who needs Best if one has Stork, Kal and Jangbi?

It seems to me that Kal´s style is just much more similar to Bisu´s, Jangbi and Stork just seem to have another way of playing protoss. But what do I know?
when watching game 1 i was wondering if bisu got the idea for the 2 base carrier from stork. if he did he did not execute it nearly as well as stork would. but entertaining series none the less, and good play from fantasy
I'd be careful saying "jealous" here joohyunee Perhaps it's better to stick with a more conservative "Perhaps they wanted to step in the way of the person using the same race doing so well".
Very surprising results though. Gonna watch these games for sure. It'll help my TvP play, no doubt!

Oh yeah thanks for the translation. Good read.
Sorry, I meant like he was the 3rd player to reach 2 consecutive finals.
The korean was worded weirdly.. Fixed the OP =)
He's the 3rd terran player to reach 2 consecutive finals to be picky. July and Ra did it too.
I was really disappointed by the semi, Bisu played badly and it was really one sided. Props to Fantasy though, who would have thought he would go this far in this OSL !

Stork made 2 in a row too(though he lost both ).
Yeah, I thought fantasy was going to lose at every single stage of this league. Props to him for making it this far, though I hope he loses to whichever zerg makes the finals.

Arena MSL '08 is "awhile"? It was only 2 SLs ago (discounting GOM).
But there have been 2 GOM finals since then --- Jaedong > Flash and Bisu > Jangbi.
I'd like to see a terran win something, but please not this time =D
edit: and another MSL final will take place before OSL finals, and it's ZvP, so at the time of the OSL finals there will have been 5 consecutive starleagues not won by a terran. (Not that that's all that big a streak, but 5 is still more than 2.)

bisu helped july out said he "has to" kill stork in the tiebreaker
then stork killed july
"love and admiration" is only outside of cutthroat competition, during offline etc. flash even practiced with leta before their match. It's a snake den and just fine that way.
HAHAHAHA, I fockin figured! Stork, Jangbi and Kal sitting around being pissed about Bisu grabbing the icon glory.
I can just picture the scene. No wonder Fantasy seemed to have been looking in the palantír while maphacking at times. He was just 1 or 2 steps ahead the entire series. Guess that's what happens when Stork helps you prepare a series. That man is insanely organized
I doubt Bisu even practiced at all. He didn't practice vs best, and was really sorry beating his teammate and everything, so this time he's probably like "um I'll just go easy on fantasy", and then this happened...
Oh man, if I was fantasy I'd be shitting bricks if I ended up vs jaedong in the finals. Even though fantasy has made it to 2 consecutive finals his play is still really shaky. I'm quick to say that fantasy didn't sweep bisu 3-0 due to his brilliance, but because bisu just played very poorly.

Seriously, it seems like an incredible number of players get help from Much in match preparation. Much is a crafty sonofabitch, that's for sure.
much also used to have the best pvt in the world before he went into his most recent slump. it's good to see that he obviously can still create some good strategies even while he's not playing well

I'll bet that he felt sorry for taking Backho's spot and decided to man up and forfeit discreetly, RIGHT?
When I look at the maps, it is easier for terran to defeat zerg than for protoss to beat zerg. Since I beat Bisu Hyung to get to the finals, I will take the championship on his behalf.

Watch the games - fantasy played pretty damn well. Bisu's game sense was lacking during parts of them, but overall it was an amazing display by fantasy.

My favorite part of the interview I'm surprised Fantasy has so many connections with well-known players. It's nice to get a behind-the-scene feel of the pros' relationships. And lol at inter-dragon drama.
- Your reaction to carriers in game 1 was very good ▲ When I saw that he didn’t take his 3rd after his reaver came out, I was sure that he was going carriers. I was already prepared for such a build and I knew how to counter it. Bisu did exactly as I thought he would.
I just noticed two things: - Fantasy also went for a hidden expo vs Stork in game 5 last final. It looks like he inspires this risky strat a lot from oov. - Last final, Stork said if Fantasy had practiced with Much then he would have won. This time Fantasy practiced with Much and won the semifinal.

also i was totolly like, oh yea bisu jaedong finals fuck yeah, then im like WHAT THE FUCK but oh well, better play won but bisu didn't play at his best
Im surprised fantasy managed to bisu 3-0 without the help of oov. Fantasy is really strong in series. Just a great coach alone didnt make him take down ggplay. luxury and now bisu in series. It was his own skill as a player. Im really impressed because i was expecting fantasy to lose 2-3 because fantasy is really good at series and they're both teammates so i expected it to be really close with bisu barely winning instead he destroys bisu 3-0;;.

Fantasy is very possibly the player with the strongest strategical and game sense. His micro pales in comparison to the opposition, yet he wins in glorious fashion anyways.
Fuck..no wonder Fantasy was playing so well...seems the other Dragon were more than happy to help him defeat Bisu. But serves Bisu right,he almost has few or no friends in progaming while Fantasy has so many connections.Learn some humility Taek Yong!

Yes bisu had no practice partners..Im sure...seriously Bisu fanboys are the WORST. Savior fans are ridiculously fanatical but Bisu fans just make up all sorts of illogical silliness whenever he loses.

As sad as I am I won't get to see Bisu vs. Jaedong finals (would have been soooo epic ) I am very happy for Fantasy.
I never understood all the hate he gets around here on TL, hopefully now people can start to show him a little respect. Making it to the OSL finals two consecutive times is not luck. This guy is amazing at preparing for series, and his builds and strategic senses are just sublime. Too many people just go to TLPD and look at the win/loss section and judge a player by that alone. He is, IMO, very fun to watch, and I can't wait to see what he pulls in the finals.
I'm personally kinda curious to see how Bisu fares being on the same bench as Stork and Jangbi during Race Wars... :D
I also think it's cool that Best chose not to get involved. He seems real close to Bisu, its nice to see some loyalty especially between two high caliber players.

Well, I don't think too many people realize this, but the SKT team (coaches or owners, not the players) probably dislikes fantasy a great deal. To them winning in the proleague is much more important in terms of getting the team sponsorship and fame. But Fantasy's was for the most part a failure in proleague (with the exception of the playoffs), while he's been shockingly successful in the OSL. It gives off the strong impression that he's only worrying about his personal success.

Stop making things up and defaming Fantasy, or the whole of SKT1 for that matter.
Wow. didnt expect fantasy to win here. and 3-0??? cmon bisu! Congrats to you fantasy but If I were you I would be wishing by.hero won because there is no chance you are beating jaedong.
And latent lol. did you learn that in your SC class too?

This man speaks truth. Jaedong Ftw.
That's his and your truth. Doesn't make it a fact, unless you provide concrete evidence.
OMG, Everybody was againts Bisu . I remember semifinals of Incruit OSL. Everybody was againts Best when he was going to play with Stork. Jealous is a bad thing !
Fantasy has a much better chance at beating Jaedong than people are giving him credit for.
ForGG's MSL run, powering up to take out Flash in the semis and then Jaedong in the finals handily and to a lesser extent Mind's breakthrough MSL seem very similar to what is happening now.
I'm not saying he's a favorite, but if someone were willing to offer me 2:1 odds I'd consider it about fair.
Have you actually read my posts? Or are you just hopping on the ad hominem bandwagon because you have nothing relevant to say?
Hear me out. You may not realize how little the individual leagues contribute to a team's overall financial health and stability. A team overall doesn't benefit from a player's individual league success, other than being forced to pay him more as he gains popularity. On the other hand their contracts with their sponsors usually involve rewards based on their success in the playoffs.
Why do you think Flash played so well in the proleague, but failed so miserably in the individuals? There was a lot of pressure from his coaches to carry the team through to the playoffs. He had to practice for those matches before he could even begin to worry about the MSL or OSL.
No one in Korea expected Fantasy to get this far, just because of his sub-par play in the Winners League. He was 6-7 in Winners League, with a horrible 6 game losing streak. What's important to note is that the losing streak began February 1. The OSL round of 16 began February 6. The MSL round of 16 began January 31, before his Winners League losing streak, and as it turned out he was ousted very quickly from the MSL. It doesn't take a genius to connect the dots.
I'm not flaming the guy. I love his creative Boxeresque play, as standard Terran is too boring for me to watch. I'm just pointing out something not particularly obvious to the casual viewer.
you're clueless starleague success is really good for a team as well and the coaching staff/management is not stupid. or if they are they have oov to explain it to them. fantasy's greatest strength is that hes smart and he prepares well for matches. that style does not serve you well in proleague where you have little preparation and lots of matches vs generic, lesser known players. starleagues are where you can prepare well and where that kind of player truly shines. he does not blow off proleague, he is just not well suited for that. hating him for that while he brings you consecutive silver medals and the recognition that comes with it would be fucking retarded.
I'm NOT "hating him". I have all the respect in the world for him making it to the OSL finals, especially over Bisu. My point is it's possibly not a coincidence his losing streak in the Winners League started just as he began his OSL round of 16. I know certain players need to prepare a great deal for each match they play. It's why Savior didn't even bother trying to dominate the OSL when he went on his MSL runs, and why he benefitted from a more spaced out schedule. My point is the IMPRESSION on others was that fantasy was dedicating an uneven amount of time towards preparing for his individual league matchups.
And to be fair to other players, everyone benefits from having the time to practice for specific players and matchups. Fantasy's not some sort of alien creature who's different from all his teammates. Flash needs time to prepare for each matchup just like everyone else, which is why I mentioned him falling out of both leagues. And it doesn't matter what oov or other players/coaches say to the other coaches or management. They still want their players to contribute as much as possible to the proleague matchups. They'll always pressure the players to win for the group rather than the individual. Fantasy losing 6 games in the Winners League, for *whatever* reason, is going to result in strong feelings of disappointment from the higher ups.
I also forgot to mention Fantasy has generally done mediocre to below average in all Proleague seasons, not just the Winners League. This includes the seasons where teams had to decide the matchups before their competition started. Fantasy is a guy who has made it to two OSL finals in a row. That's an amazing accomplishment! Think of the very few players who've done such a thing. Did you ever see them failing as miserably as Fantasy has in Proleague? There's a limit to how much you can argue about a person's "style" or "method of preparation".

For playing in Winner's league, there's increased amount of pressure coming from all sides - the team, the coach, the opponent. The weight of having to carry your team is enormous, whereas in an individual league, that isn't so much that case.
Also, if you watched the VODs, fantasy actually played pretty well (maybe except the game vs Luxury in the playoffs), just that the opponents played better/smarter than the opponents he faced in the OSL. There are many factors as to why he's succeeded more in the individual league than the PL, so I don't think it's justified to say that 'the higher ups are going to rape his ass'. It's not like Fantasy never performed.

Thanks for the interview. Hopefully he will now show good results in proleague.
- You will be playing a zerg in the finals ▲When I look at the maps, it is easier for terran to defeat zerg than for protoss to beat zerg. Since I beat Bisu Hyung to get to the finals, I will take the championship on his behalf.
This OSL finals reminds me of oov vs July finals. Unless Jaedong comes up with something unorthodox or Fantasy screws up, the OSL gold is handed to Fantasy thanks to the map pool. Might be another 3-0.
Fantasy hasn't quite performed even close to what people would normally expect of him. He's 6-7 in Winners league, 11-9 in '08-'09 Shinhan Bank Proleague, and 1-4 in the '08 Shinhan Bank Proleague. That's 18-20, below 50% average. That's rather mediocre for someone who has made the OSL finals *twice in a row*. And about his opponents in the OSL not playing as well as his proleague opponents, I mean...I don't think it's fair to withhold credit for Fantasy's excellent play in the last 2 OSLs, and attribute his success to subpar opponents. And the quality of OSL opponents, especially in the RO16 and up, is significantly higher than in proleague. You sure as heck won't be facing Hyun or 815 in the OSL RO x.
And regardless of the reasons, the coaches/managers will eventually become somewhat irritated if their top-level SL player can't translate his success to WL (which was my original point, that Fantasy's coaches probably aren't overjoyed at his individual success).
latent: No, of course they won't be happy that he doesn't do this well in Proleague. To be fair, he doesn't get nearly the playing time of Bisu or Best, so his opportunities to pad stats with cheap wins are fewer. Yes, he doesn't dominate proleague and this is a reason he's not a true "successor" to Boxer and oov.
On the other hand, he did just win an OSL semifinal, and came through in WL Playoffs when the rest of the team wtfailed, so this is more a question of, "How can we get you to be more consistent?" not, "OMG we're so upset with you you won an OSL semi when you're barely over 0.500 in PL how dare you?"
