I know its crucial to get beyond D on Iccup.(Max rank is D on Iccup so far. My record is 11-31.) Do I need to just quit doubting myself and practice and play more? Pretty much. For hotkeying buildings you can implement this in your process of building a structure. I myself for example after giving the order to build my first Barracks will immediately queue the gather resources command afterwards by shift right-clicking back to my minerals, so the worker goes back to mining after finishing the building. During this time the Barracks starts to build and I can hotkey it.

I used to just spam them on the keyboard when I was bored while not even in game.

In other words, if you 'muta dance', can your mutas get off more shots in x amount of time than if you just sat there and fired away?
I'm pretty sure it doesn't
Bummer. As always, thanks.

im currently in the process of resetting my hotkeys, as i had a suboptimal setting in the past and im trying to get used to the new setting. So i definitely understand, how annoying it is, forcing yourself to use them. But stick to it, try to use the hotkeys whenever it makes sense, just play a bunch, get a routine, like cryoc said. As a Protoss player, i always hkey my buildings when they're still warping, i'd recommend shift queing back to minerals as well.
Furthermore, you'd might wanna start using the F key too to jump to important spots fast.
|
Yea I plan on getting used to using the F keys. Thank you guys for the advice! Btw I didn't know you could hotkey buildings while they're still warping. Does that apply to zerg and terran buildings as well?
|
|
What would be a good hotkey layout for Protoss? 1 scouting probe 2 nexus 3 gateway 4 gateway 5 gateway 6 gateway 7 gateway 8 gateway 9 robo 0 nexus? Of course into mid game I will use 12345 for units. For the f keys should I put them at my main nexus and expo nexus? For the other f key should I put it at my ramp or at my rally point of gateways? Or does it really just depend on the opponents strategy?

i find having ur screen hotkeys on the gates are pretty nice, alot of the time for mains that are in the corners of the map i dont hotkey past the early game as i really like the mouse scroll trick, where u can hold down the mouse scroll and flick ur mouse to the corner of the screen where ur base is, and its like an instant screen jump to that position. Saves hotkeys :D also by having ur gates in f3 or w/e really helps open hotkeys for other producing buildings that u normally dont mass up (unless its really late) like robo, stargate, even a forge sometimes just so i can see when my upgrades are done.
|
Okay, thank you! I forgot about hotkeying one of the f keys too gateways.

Do you think 1 scouting scv 2 cc 3 4567890 raxs and facts is good for terran? Or should I hotkey 1 and 2 for scans and 3--0 for units. For zerg 1 scouting drone or overlord 234567890 for hatch's. I see now why its important to hotkey gates/raxs/hatchs as one of the f keys. Because you need 1-0 for units.
|
I do the following...
1 CC 2 Scouting SCV 4-5-6-7 factories/rax 8-9-0 comsat
Then later 1 2 3 for units (gols/vessels on 1, vults on 2, tanks on 3), then eventually 4 for units too.
In TvZ I would use 1, 2 marines, 3 medics, 4 tanks, 5 vessels.
I use the F2 for my main and F3 for natural.
|
Wow, thank you so much. Them are some very useful hotkeys. I greatly appreciate it.
|
I like reserving 1 and 2 for units that aren't often a-moved like shuttles, dropships, lurkers, scourge, vessels, and tanks in tvz. This way you can do 3 4 5 for army. 3a4a5a is much more fluid than 1a2a3a.

So, if a ghost sends a lockdown missile at a wraith, and the wraith cloaks before the missile hits, is it still lockdowned? If anyone can link to or refer to a VOD where this happens so I can see it for myself, that would be great too.

I tested it for you. Lockdowning a wraith disables its cloak. It's not only temporarily revealed - it stops being cloaked, and instead of draining energy while lockdowned, it regenerates energy.

Thank you for that information. I didn't know you could do that either!

Your hotkeys should by dynamic and change throughout the game.
I play terran and as an example it is fine to hotkey separate production facilities at the start of the game so you can easily cycle through them, as well as having your scout and perhaps your building scv hotkeyed to 1 and 2. however toward the late game you will need at least 5 - 6 control groups for your main army. you will not be able to control a near-maxed mech army with any kind of finesse if you have fewer than 5 or 6 control groups.
This doesn't leave much space for hotkeying buildings separately assuming scans are on 8, 9 and 0. That's why it is best to use the location keys to switch back to your production facilities. I use F4 to center on the production facilities in my main, and F2 for my rally point. I use F3 for my most recent expansion. This allows me to easily switch back and hit my production cycles even during an engagement, but it will be necessary to go back to your macro area and click the facts / rax one at a time as you cycle through them (which does eat up a few seconds).
If I need to switch back to my nat or third, I just double tap the hotkey linked to the corresponding comsat, or just click the minimap.
whichever hotkey system you end up using you will need to constantly rework and tweak it and find your own setup that is comfortable for you.
