It's awkward with the thumb when it gets to 4/5a onwards and it's awkward to start 1a2a3a with the pinky. I'm contemplating just hotkeying important units on 1,2 and just start from 3a4a5a6a(etc.) instead. Thoughts? I use middle finger on 1 and 2, index finger for the rest of the numbers and pinky for A.

My first year of Starcraft I used to use the thumb and sort of flip my hand upside down as I went up in control groups but shifting to pinky was significantly worth it. I hotkey units that don't get 'a' moved as often on 1 and 2, (vessels, tanks in bio tvz, dropships, lurkers, defilers, scourge, sairs, shuttles, arbs etc.) and I also highly recommend this even if it is less common. Somewhere inside I always knew this was probably most ergonomically efficient. The transition is probably going to kill me though. Heh

I used to play Brood War when I was a child and now I'm missing this game a lot. I really enjoyed playing use map setting on battle.net and I try mounting virtual drive to be able to play it again but the game request me to insert the CD to be able to play. Unfortunately, my laptop doesn't have a cd-drive. Is there anyway I can play Brood War on battle.net without a CD ? Also, is there anyone still playing it on battle.net ? and what about use map setting ?

You'll need a CD key to play on official battle.net servers ,but most people that want to ladder play on ICCup or Fish

I go pinky always on 'a' So for example if I were to 1a2a3a4a5a6a7a8a9a0a it would be 1(ring)a 2(middle)a 3(index)a and then index on #s 4 and higher. To me thumb on 'a' seems crazy because you are taking your hand almost completely off the keyboard.

Buy a copy from Blizzard, or try to activate an old version with your CD key there. Should work, however not 100% sure 8[

really no other way to get better if you want to practice strictly build orders, mechanics etc then you dont even have to play against people. play against 1-3 computers depending on how good you are and just keep playing games. after you have build orders and basic mechanics down, you can play against people to try and improve your game sense. i wouldnt suggest watching pro games until you have at least basic understandings of each match up, unless the game has english commentary. also, you will lose 90% of your first 30-50 games with people because starcraft is just a hard game to learn and even D players on iccup have probably been playing for years. just think of every game you play at the start as a learning game and dont get discouraged. you will get smashed in some games whereas in others you will lose because you make that 1 crucial mistake, but the moment you start getting discouraged your chances of improving slow down dramatically

I play UMS on ICCup sometimes, but it's not like the past when Brood War was in the top 3 most played RTS games, and 90% of people played UMS. Now it's mostly melee.

the drawbacks are you have a hard time trying to control the map when half or more of your army has to stay in base and defend drones, or you could over invest in spores and not have a big enough army for any engages. you could go spire though and try muta vs wraith. you still run into the same problem where terran has the map control though, as you going to kill his scvs isnt nearly as damaging as him killing your drones.

Are there any drawbacks to this? There are many ways to deal with it. I always made 1 - 3 hydralisks until he revealed to me that it was 2 port wraith. Since it's a 1 base Terran, you don't know what he's doing and you just have to do a build that works against everything. This is ok, since he's on 1 base and you're on 2. After the revelation, I got 2 spores at each base, completely protecting my drones, and I made nothing but drones like crazy, which always gave me an economical advantage. Then I went hydra lurker, sometimes with a few queens for ensnare or spawn broodling, which I often killed my opponent with. I took a third base as soon as possible, then I got hive and defilers. I beat many Terrans who were better than I was this way.
