Is there any trick for hotkeying units of the same type fast, instead of just clicking on each of the units or just shift-adding which just adds random units. I play terran so i want my marines medics and tanks on seperate hotkeys fast! Box off edges of the 'ball' and if you don't grab 12 shift box or click some more till you get 12 move them to the side and repeat. If you ctrl click you may group units in the center and it'll be a pain to get them to move or you'll double hotkey some units.

guys been grinding games and im getting the hang of this. macro is like playing the piano, you hit the keys in order and you sound/do beautiful. but I am screeeeeeeeeeeeeching to a halt when it comes to defiler vs enemy Out In the Open. Eat two lings, and shoot a swarm is easy enough. But holy hell when the enemy is just running backwards and you keep chasing them with swarms I become brain dead. it's hard enough to control 3 groups of lings, 1 group of lurkers and a pack of scourgies...but to do it all the damn time every second because the marines stim back....I get really emotional and lose control (not emotional but I am trying to get a point across). in the process I feel like the terran is just buying time when EYE should be the one buying time.
Is there a certain way I am supposed to go about this? fighting terran balls that keep moving around in circles on Fighting Spirit, while I chase them with swarms like a headless chicken.
I could use tips on unit control, tactics and strategy when the game is at this stage. Should I have my whole army right clicked (follow) on my defilers?
I just played a game where this happened. I rocked him hardcore early and mid game. I even did SV snipes and held him at bay forever. but when I moved out....he just ran around while I kept chasing him with storms. I went insane and got ultralisk tunnel vision and just threw ultras at him off 4 bases until he quit. I won and I am happy with how I did early-mid, but that last part about the game really leaves a bad taste in my mouth. feel like i lost.
Here is the replay, I hope you can help! http://repdepot.net/replay.php?id=50632

Looked like you were only on 3 bases, not 4, which makes a huge difference when you're pumping ultralisk like that. To be fair you did fine regardless (his macro was mediocre). I did see a little bit of his swarm retreating you were talking about. Just backstab his 3rd if he constantly backs off with him army like that. Also a well placed flank is great for crushing his army. Swing 2 control groups behind his army and then pincer him.

i didnt see the rep but from ur post i can guess ur not using plague as well as you can. plague those marines

Buying time for a fourth and then ultra upgrades kicking in. In my opinion, your biggest problem here was the beginning of the game. I'm only D+, but I think zvt is my less bad match up, take all that with a (huge) grain of salt. -you can use the larva trick to put them on the left of your hatch (not very important, but that's something to do in the beginning of the game). You saw a wall, you can get away with only 4 lings. More importantly, you need a hydra den in this situation. The only reason you survived is because he was terrible and you had mutas out by the time he had the wraiths, which should not happen. Btw you overeacted with those sunkens. His wall was not ling tight (you can't make one on FS), check his marine count. that would also have helped to guess the build. Also, once you had your muta out, you could have tried to test the main, his valk was not in time. You could have harassed and scout at that time. Same when he moves out, you don't check enough his army, you had huge opportunity for backstabs. You don't make enough ling. Lings are good. You also need to upgrade carapace much earlier. Oh yeah, and ovie speed helps against cloaked wraiths. I think you should have made less mutas and more lurkers/scourges/lings. Try to take a fourth earlier. Make lings, upgrade them (crak is the shit). One of the problem was also a very low drone count, which is in part due to those unnecessary sunkens, and you should have droned more after those mutas were out and you killed the wraiths. You shouldn't be able to afford ultras on 3 bases. It's not that bad to make them if your macro is bad though, but at least wait for their carapace upgrade... At least your opponents upgrades were as bad as yours, but you could have been 1-4 by the end of the game easily. You really need more lings, I mean you consumed an ultras and played minesweeper with them. Yeah the game was over but...
A bit of everything, but I'd say your macro was pretty decent (but loooow drone count= low money and lots of spare larvae) and your amry control was rather good, army composition/scouting/reacting not so good. Hope I helped =)

this helped tremendously. I am going to keep all your points in mind for my next games. but i dont see how my control was good. I screech to a halt in apm when i have to do defiler micro, and my resources skyrocket during this time. towards the end i just clicked A and even sent unguarded defilers to do some swarms in front of his base
I still have questions about the defiler swarm engagements. Lets say I have 3 ctrl groups of lings, 1 group of lurkers and a group of scourgies. Is this the chain of events?
1. Send my defiler in and swarm. 2. Lurker next 3. all lings (keep them within the cloud and hold position ifyou have to. 4. scourgies right clicked on defiler and kill SV that come close.
OR is it
1. Lurker first into the fray and tank some damage 2. next defiler swarm on the lurkers 3. lings 4. scourgies right clicked on defiler and kill SV that come close.
OR
1. Lings first and then Lurkers? (this method seems bad since my lings practically melt if they go in first
To make things simple should I just have all ctrl groups right clicked on my lurkers, so that they all go in together like brothers?
Please sirs, many of my troops have died senselessly in botched engagements. they need your help.

I'm not really sure about the exact order in which you execute the command. Ideally, you'd want to have swarm cast as soon as your lruker get under it (that sounds optimal I think ?), so you'd have to time it differently depending on your troops position (I think it comes with experience, and that there's no 100% recipe).
After that you'd want ling to come after lurkers burrow (lings are the real damage dealer against a decent terran, never forget, a pair of crackling has the highest dps of any unit in the game beside a carrier). It is also true in midgame engagements. Finally, you don't want to engage with scourge first because you want the marines ai to have another target (ideally a lurker under swarm). If you want to snipe a vessel you can always try to send some scourges with a few lings at the same time for instance, if terran is not paying attention it can work (you also have to evaluate the number of ligs necesary, to account for the positionning of the vessel etc). Maybe be a little more daring with your swarms, especially once the first is cast.
In term of hotkey, hard to say, definitely hotkey defilers/lurkers, maybe a control group of ling and try constantly rehotkey what you're going to need in a few seconds. (I'm terrible at this sort of thing and keeping my army together...).
As for your decent control, I really thought it was ok this game. Yeah your ressources skyrocketed, but then again it's pretty hard to avoid when microing defilers/muta (it happens to player far better than you^^) and it's more a multitasking problem. secondly, your control did exactly what he had to do, bought you time for ultras (and 4th too if you see what I mean), which is why banking ressources at that time is not always that bad, as long as you survive. Do remake lurkers defilers zergling in the endgame though, or you'll just... die.

has a game ever been decided by a poor split?

Probably. If a terran player had a bad split, and ended up losing to dts because his turret didn't quite finish, you could argue that the 16 minerals he would have had could have been use to start that turret faster, then kill the dts. I don't think there was ever a game that was lost solely because of a bad split though.

If you only mean the initial split of probes, one time I got 2 probes trapped behind the mineral line in the bottom left corner of Blood Bath. In promatches, I strongly doubt it, because pros have been splitting perfectly or close to it for over a decade.
