Anyway, here's a few suggestions for approaching a map you're uncomfortable with. 1) Pull up the map on liquipedia. Just stare at it for a minute or two. It's much easier than trying to evaluate a map from the map preview. What are some prominent map features? (2/3/4 player? Open middle? close 3rd gas,? ramp/no ramp to main, ect.) These are the type of things that should determine your overall approach to the map. 2) Pick an appropriate strategy based on the map features. When in doubt, play to your strengths. i.e Don't just go 2 Hatch muta just because the map is supposed to be good for it if your mutalisk control sucks. Otherwise... close, easily defensed 3rd? you may want to go for a relatively fast 3rd base. Open middle of the map? you might favor having a large midgame army with upgrades rather than rushing your tech. No ramp? maybe opt for a more aggressive build. 3) Account for the late game. Don't just look at a map and say, "Ok im going to 1 rax CC" or "This map looks good for 3 hatch muta" Have in mind each transition you're going to make before the game starts. Of course, a game of Brood War doesn't always go as planned, but at least you'll have something in mind. This way at the end of a game you can look back and see if your plan was viable in the first place. Did you lose just because it was poorly executed? Did you win just because your opponent was bad? 4) Watch your replays on the new map. If you find you are losing even with decent execution to players equal or below your skill level, your probably should consider a new approach to the map. If you are the winning but your opponent floats 2000 minerals all game, go play some more games. I think you can see what I'm getting at, don't base the validity of a strategy on 1 game. 5) Still feeling uncomfortable? Find some pro (one who plays your race) replays/vods on the map. You might not be able to glean an entire strategy this way(because you don't actually know WHY they are doing what they are doing most of the time) but I believe its still a useful way to learn things like building placement or expansion timing/location. Koreans are known for being really good at map abuse too, so you might pick up some map specific tricks along the way. Ultimately, I guess the real answer for you is to avoid automatically hosting FS when you log into Brood War. Pick 1 motw and just play that instead. Lather steps 1-5, rinse, and repeat.

You may lose a bunch to start with but you'll get better at the map and better at your base layouts then soon enough you'll be playing a new map every week and doing fine on all of them. It helps initially to keep the map open in a seperate tab to begin with so you can refer to it as the map starts.

You should also have a plan for what areas of the map are important for defending multiple bases in the mid game, where you should send your army for your timings, etc. Watch some of Day9's old videos when he does map analysis and you'll get the idea. http://blip.tv/day9tv/d9d-0044-match-point-analysis-3553776

The highly transferable skills are micro, macro, both at once, knowledge of what beats what under what circumstances, good ratios for worker/base count to production structures. Grind that up and you'll be able to play at least okay on any map. The adaptability is strategic/tactical. Like the knowledge that air power is good on maps with tons of cliffs and walls cutting off ground units, (Katrina, Chain Reaction) or that with area-denial units it's always good to get between the guy and his anticipated 3rd or 4th base (like on Heartbreak Ridge especially). Be looking in advance for where to place your production screenshot and the ideal mid-game position towards which you want to take any possible path. Balance out your 200/200 army and its offensive/defensive priorities well in advance. If you're floating like crazy on other maps it's probably because you're playing the economy/production ratio by ear. Try to recall how you learned that in the first place and force yourself through that again.
