It's not that we want you to leave this forum or avoid answering your questions, but they're so "FAQ", that it's somewhat tiring to answer them over and over again. Please search for more than a few seconds next time, stuff like that is rather easy to find. Anyhow... Portal:Beginners/Mechanics

(Unfortunately, our lans have turned to Supcom rather than BW and there are some weird sticky inputs where randomly I can't bounce from one hotkey to the next, plus some weird building ui hotkeys.) But at least for BW, the hotkeys are consistent and it's very easy to develop a rhythm so you don't have worry: hit a key and you're there.

As for hotkey setup, throughout the game mine would switch, and I think this is another important point for mechanics that isn't talked about enough. In the beginning, I would always set 1234567890 on main nexus, then when I scout I put my probe on 1. I practiced using 2 as nexus so 2p to build probe - tough as those two keys are far apart - good thing to practice. The three stages of gameplay looked like this (Just to give you an idea of how your hotkey setup might change during the game.): early game: 1 scout, 2,4 nexus, 3 builder probe, 5-7 gateways, 8 robo, 9 nexus 0 stargate/nexus/robo (depends on build order) screen hotkeys (F2-F3) on main and natural expansion, F4 on my base where I was going to send the builder probe. tasks: keep scout alive and press 2424 and 5656 a LOT. mid game: 1-3 units, 4 shuttle/units/nexus, 5-9 gates, 0 stargate/nexus/robo F2-F4 on main, nat, and third expansion late game: 1-3 units, 4 shuttle/units, 5-6 units, 7-8 observers/units, 9 important building in production (such as watching the arbiter tribunal finish) 0 robo/stargate/nex F2 on main, F3 on nat, F4 on unit production buildings (built horizontally to fit more in one screen area) Later I started practicing hotkeys while playing. In the beginning of the game, I would hotkey a mineral probe on 8 so I can practice hitting 8 to select my robo, which happened a lot later in the game. By selecting the probe I would get confirmation of pressing the hotkey. To get up to speed, I recommend playing Hotkey and Scout Trainer. You can start with something slower than fastest if you want, then when you're comfortable with the speed of changing screens / using the hotkeys, you can speed it up. Pick a race, learn 1 build vs X - go practice against X cpu, then learn vs Y cpu, then vs Z. Then go make D/D- on ladder with your 3 builds. Have fun! Edit: Also, put your ring finger on 1 when using hotkeys - all the pros do it and it really is a lot faster using ring + pointer finger than middle + pointer for some reason.

I think you're gonna lose interest after one or two weeks. I had no idea what the Starcraft series was about until a week ago. I couldn't play SC2 because I play on a toaster, so I bought Brood War. I thought it was going to be sort-of a mindless point-and-click game that was fairly easy but everyone loved. Turns out, it's pretty brutal to beginners. I'm going to try to become at least somewhat competent, and I know that takes more than one or two weeks.
