Hey there,
I'm new to BW (about 150 games played so far) and I just reached C- today. My goal would be to reach B-/B eventually. I come in from a sc2 background (played the sequel before the original.)
I obviously have a ton to learn in every aspect of my game (engagements, battle micro, muta micro, timings, etc). I uploaded a few VODs of me playing (1 ZvT and 2 ZvP I believe.)
If anyone has some spare time to watch a game and maybe comment / criticize my gameplay. Not so much on strategy but rather stuff that can be applied on a more general manner. Like basic BW mechanics I don't seem to know about and stuff like that.
I already asked some questions on this part of the forums and got a lot of constructive criticism so far, so thanks in advance for your input.

ZvP against forge FE + Show Spoiler +
ZvP against 1 base sair + Show Spoiler +
P.S. : Obviously my opponents are not very good, since it's hard to find decent players on ICCup during the hours I play (mostly daytime NY time zone)
DISCLAIMER : After re-watching the videos the music is a little loud so maybe turn your headphones down!

Hey cool ! Watching now will comment when I get off of work man, I just want you to know that the ZvP vs Forge FE video is not working.
EDIT : Oh and welcome to BW
EDIT 2 : What level were you in SC2? I have played you in SC2 and BW recently I think. Real cool, you play good for someone who started recently. Keep up that apm...^^
|
Oh thanks for the heads up! The video was blocked in some countries, apparently because of the music (how lame..). I'll try to mute it see if it works, but it'll take some time.
Im grandmasters in sc2, highest was rank 10 I believe when I was practicing for ETS (a LAN near where I live).
What ID are you in star2 / Iccup? It's highly possible, though I barely play sc2 nowadays.
Thanks for the comment and lmk if you see something I could do better.

Only watch the first game, pretty nice.
You could be more opportunistic with ling runbys into the main (there's always opportunities for this) rather than waste units poking the mm force, especially when they have firebats. That would also allow you to scout what's up with the terran
Put a evo chamber in front of the sunkens to buy time for your back line (which can be canceled if they decide not to push)

Does it actually tank shots? I do this in ZvP to minimize surface area on which the zealot can reach the sunkens but never tried in ZvT. Could be pretty helpful since you need an evo to get +1 carapace near this timing anyways so it's not wasted.
Thx!

The evo chamber is placed at short distance in front of sunkens, where the mm would stand when firing at the sunken if they decide to attack. The terran can choose to ignore it but it would occupy space and make the mm harder to engage the sunken. Against weak terrans who don't focus sunken the evo can soak dmg.
Typically what happens it that the mm will start shooting the morphing evo, u will cancel it before the evo dies. This buys time for morphing lings/mutas/sunkens to finish.
Its just a emergency measure against mm timings , not meant to be a permanent building to get ups. Though if u let the building finish and repel the push u can use it.

What made you decide to switch from sc2 to bw? Just curious.

I've always wanted to try and I stopped playing sc2 a while ago. Just didn't like where the game was going. Tbh I'm regretting not playing bw during the good old days.
|
Welcome! I think the "good old days may be back". There is a lot of very high level BW being played right now. 2015 is shaping up to be a good year. Congrats on reaching C-! I hope to get there myself.

What helped me when I didn't understand the game that well strategically was watching massive numbers of pro games in succession of a matchup. I can't give that much zerg advice because it is my worst race but I would learn some standard strats and really focus on the little things players do differently each game to adapt to their opponents decisions.
|
Yeah I've been watching a ton of streams. Both pro matches with commentary and FPVODs like by.hero and effort recently. I've also studied savior's old fpvods and Chill's commentary (even though some are pretty outdated.)
I think Chill's videos are really good for player around my level. Very basic stuff.

I watched the ZvP vs 1-base corsair and here's what I saw:
- Some poor Protoss child flailing his head around wildly and slamming his fingers on the keyboard wildly trying to make things happen, albeit unsuccessfully. - You go 2-base hydra, which is a bit unorthodox, but okay, I can see that having some merit for being aggressive before templar tech finishes. - Protoss makes a scout. - Super late horrible tiny attack that does nothing from Protoss. - He makes Dark Templar and kills a bunch of drones at the base with no detectionizers - He makes a few more DTs here and there, but no cannons or high templars or anything and just rolls over and dies
gg
Assessment: You made things and he did not make nearly as many things. Then he slumped over and died, presumably because he has never hit 80 apm in a game before, and it was exhausting for him to keep up that furious pace.

Since others already commented on the 1st and 3rd games, I'll do the second game.
First let me say, nice mechanics, you're really fast and accurate. :O
You should have zerglings to defend the first zealot attack (you had like ~300 minerals.) You can't rely on sim city and sunkens alone for protection given the nature of PvZ early game meta these days. On the other hand you defended the zeal/HT attack at your nat very well. However after that, you decided to play passively after encountering cannons at 12. It seemed like he took 12 around the time he attacked, so you have opportunities to apply pressure at his nat while he waits for the eco to kick in.
Other than that I actually have more to nitpick with the toss player cause I play toss too. Also lol at the recall and the ensuing chat

Can't really give advice on the ZvT game because he went BBS vs 9 pool, which is pretty much a build order loss. Maybe place your overlord closer to his natural bridge so that you can see when his units move out. If you post some more standard VoDs like 3 hatch muta vs 1 rax FE it'd be a lot easier to help.

I've watched the first video and if that's how a C player looks like then ICCup is one scary place

When you start getting a good amount of drones, and when you work on a 4th base, you need to add more hatcheries. You spend your larvae decently, but you still had a lot of spare minerals.

Hi i'm protoss and I don´t like you build in both games. You plaied 9 Pool 6 lings in both games. What did the lings acomplished? In my opinion nothing and it slows down you ecco very badly. You need these lings only in two situations. 2 Gate all in and lucky strike against a gready Protoss. On top you build 12 gas and this slows you even more. 1 drone to build and 3 to gather gas. In my opinion you should focus on your econemy. The hardest thing as a zerg is to think about when to build drones and when building attacking Units. I would prefere you a more marco oriantated game. 12 Pool 12 Hatch or even 12 Hatch 12 Pool. Scout with a drone if something cheesy comes.
Spire into lurker is a nightmare for a protoss. The second game was a bit odd because you didn´t made any and you have made 5 hatch hydra and no presure on protoss. I think its just a build choise you are only in C.

I only watched the first one, but what I really don't like is that you still decide to build a sunken colony after you have crushed his rush attempt and know that he cant do much to you (you even see his barracks flying). I think in this case with your low economy you shouldn't invest in the sunken as you lose a drone and sunkens aren't cheap you know
|
Watched 2 Streams today: Hero is doing 9 Pool and builds only 2 lings and goes into lategame, it is the a safer build i think.
Effort made 12 Hatch and 11 Pool and was able to defend one 1gate expand easily. I think you will need a bit experiance to defend a offgate all in. While building the hatch he send a scounting drone, that might help.
Hope I was able to help you. You have the mechanics but not the knowlige the opposit of me xD

I saw SC2 and C- after 150 games and was very surprised... But then I saw that you were GM so that kinda explains it
Welcome and enjoy
in the ZvP against forge FE game your wall at your third was nonexistent. What people can do is make position their buildings to only make one point of entrance and drone drill to block zealots from ever reaching the sunkens, since there are 6-10+ drones stacked together in a choke, some drones and 2 sunkens can stop 8 zealots.
