This is the first tournament in the TSL installment, with hopefully many more to come in the future! The player list was generated similar to Gem League, not based on skill or amount of fangirls, a group of people pulled together by a common interest - destroying all competition in Brood War.
Sorry for the delay, it's been a busy day with a lot of dentistry and a slow internet connection. We figured that we should find something a little more fun than just tossing everyone's names into a random number generator affair and seeing where things fell.
For those of you who love the drama of a real-time lottery system, as featured in just about every tournament worth watching, you can watch this video:
For those of you who don't want to watch the video, you can just consult this handy chart, with sprite graphics courtesy of the always magnificent Trozz:
Good luck to all concerned, looking forward to seeing how these groups break down
Players please email me your replays at tplymyer(at)gmail.com! Make sure you name the replays something comprehensible for the casters...XvsYGame1 or something, you all know the drill. Let's try and have all the group stage games complete by June 30th!!
This might be the best skilled tournament to date. You think Flash vs Jaedong has good and exciting games? Then you have to just wait until what you see here!
it's okay calling a non starleague "starleague" every one has been slapping the term starleague on their tournament to make it seem legit . Sounds really awesome though hope lots of epic moment (insert obama with mic.jpg) here.
Technically Starcraft League is a good description! Haha. I was originally gonna do OSL format (groups, pick ceremony for ro16, groups, ro8 brackets) but decided this would be easier on the casters and players.
On June 12 2012 00:42 corumjhaelen wrote: Epic. Rekrul, please troll this to the max. Edit : map pool not epic enough though.
Made a contract deal with Trozz - he is crazy map tournament, I'm boring standard map tournament :3
It was only three lines though...
Truthfully, the maps are very nostalgic for me...with the decline of Korean pro BW it got me thinking about how I got into the scene...I had started watching reps/games during the Savior era but it wasn't really a big deal to me, it was just like "oh cool, BW stuff" but I didn't really care...
For whatever reason the GomTV Starleague Season 3 was the first tournament I was basically addicted to...stayed up every night it was live to watch, got invested into the league...this is the same map pool from that league - kind of like a little memory for me, as I have been addicted to pro BW since watching that league haha. I'll try and spice it up in the future, but for this league - as it's the first online one I've run, I usually do LANs - I'd like to run this map pool, even if it's a little bland. :D

I completely see your point and I like most of those maps, just consider changing God's Garden (and maybe HB Ridge) to something else. It's just, it's a fun tournament, so I think Andro+Desti are enough for serious maps, and you could throw other cool stuff from that time (like Medusa and Outsider). Anyway, just my opinion and I totally respect your choice. Edit : invite me next time plz :p
Alright, let's do this! One of the most epic random lineups I've seen, I hope I get at least one of the bigger names in my groups, and enough easy opponents to advance at the same time
I know, we have such a huge range of skill in the tournament hahaha.
TDL, good idea, I can give away another one of the big Vinyls to whoever gets the bracket the closest, once we get out of groups....or something like that, I'll think on it :D
This is seriously an awesome list of players. Getting to watch a bunch of badass TL veterns, mods, and some legendary players from back before I knew about BW....yes please!
Thanks so much for organizing this, going to be totally awesome!!
Semi finals: Liquid´Drone (Eriador) v 7mk (My belief is that 7mk=sevenemkey=se(vene)mke(y)=Christoph Semke=mondragon. And i wont take no for an answer) Rekrul v Chill Finals: Drone v Rekrul Winner: Drone with an epic 2001 strat that everyone has forgotten about.

Not really but define good^^ Having watch some recent Rekrul replays, I have to root for him. Edit : I'm not sure about Eriador, he should be better I think.
Good luck with it, having a big range of skill makes me sad I didn't get to throw my name in the hat to provide an extra body for the group stage, but look forward to seeing the games anyway!

You guys don't realize that I'm the dark horse here. Sure, I miffed Gem League, but that was on purpose. I'll be counting on overconfidence as I dominate my opponents in this TSL with my builds that have been lying in wait.

He did it half way and had to go also If I am not mistaken In_Dove replace him in the middle of the show .
I think it was the other way around. G5 was unreachable for the first half so they had In_Dove play, but then they got in contact with G5 through his girlfriend so G5 got on and In_Dove went to bed. It was a pretty funny show.
Oh yeah while we are on the subject of Foreign Tournaments, the Chinese actually still have many BW tournies with players like F91 (the one that defeated Idra) and FengZi (WCG Grand Finalist). By the looks of it, their servers categorizes each players by levels. F91 is level 16 but there are also many, many people who have attain the level status of "Professional" as a whole new class after level 19. So their level of play is fairly high imo.
I will post up an entire new thread later on any further details that allows TLers to watch their live streams/ VODs and etc.
Holy shit apparently there leagues are actually separated by 'Semi-Pro' and 'Full-time'

Seriously? I tried to delve towards the Chinese scene a little while ago and met a bit of a brick wall- it seems to be even harder to get near to than the Korean scene! Please follow this up, a lot of good can come of it

intrigue is good! I think I played him once and lost, and that was in a "not inactive for years" phase! but at least I'll get one of each matchup, that's swell.
For starting map during group play, I'm sure you both can agree upon a map from the pool - they're all pretty standard. Loser picks the next map. No repeat maps per series.
As it states in the OP, all group games are going to be BO3!
Poor CaucasianAsian, gets group of death with 3 Bish ranked guys. Dunno if bioboy and sadist still play BW, but I think 2PacShakur is still an active bw'er.
Anyway, my predictions as to who gets out of groups:
Group A bioboyAT (I think it's either him or sadist, and milchmann has always had solid ZvT) 2PacShakur
Group B eri intrigue
Group C Hot_Bid Cambium (no idea how good Ideas is tbh)
Sadistx IS NOT the same guy as the oldschool Sadist.
One is an American B ranked foreign terran from Michigan, another is a D ranked Russian spy from DC. The latter is who we have competing in this event.
lol I love the pictures you assigned to everyone, so good.
Argh! I was hoping there would be at least one person at my level in my group T_T Sadly not, I'm DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMED

Yup, it'll be a long-ish while, but it should keep foreign BW alive for a good amount of time. Might try doing two or three groups per weekend for casting. SirJolt and I shall figure out the schedule once games are all in. :D
Sweet groups, hoping rekrul does well enough that he decides to stream bw, as he has spoken of in that past. If you read this ohh mighty one, grant us the wonders of your drunken brood war skills.
Is the round robin bo3 with each person or just bo1? Also, I hear we can choose R or pick a certain race for each individual round? If so, can I play R for this 1st one? :o
Bo3 with each person. So you play three games vs each opponent. Also race picking is allowed, you can play random or tvp tvz pvt or p vs your first opponent and z vs your second.
@Kiett I'll PM you tomorrow or sometime this weekend
Trozz, nothing in particular...just decline in Brood War events + people loving Gem League + I've been wanting to do this for a while. Now seemed a good time to start.
sick graphics, sick liquipedia page, sick group drawings and graphics. this is probably the best online bw event I've seen in quite a while and not a single game has even been broadcast yet.

professional broodwar does not need your white knighting
only thing is, foreign brood war is not professional, so white knighting it is definitely encouraged by me!

This promises to be one of the most talented BW tourneys to date. I am HIGHLY excited. I honestly think the casters should record the casts and put the VODs up on a youtube, especially if there is going to be more TSL's to come.

I'm pretty sure that just like with Gem League (barring a batch of accidentally lost VODs), all the VODs will be recorded, and available in the twitch (/other streaming site's) archives.

SirJolt & Co. should actually be Kiante, SirJolt & Co.
I hadn't wanted to commit Kiante while he was banned, since Mizu and I had managed at least one Gem League cast without him, but the truth is that Kiante is very much the brains behind the cast. All I do is show up with my copy of BW in my hand and my Skype signed in. Kiante sets up the stream, teaches me how to latency trick, actually understands BW, and a hundred other things that come up on the night.
I'm pretty excited for this. Gem league was truly amazing. Casting was very entertaining, and some of the maps were weird, and cool. (Waiting to Panic!)

half your games from gem league involved a proxy hatch that totally didn't have to be proxied to be effective at all but the casters acted like it did

That's the plan, just need to find out which day is better for everyone. If we end up doing it Friday Night (EST) then it will be on the same time, Friday night, every weekend.

One group per weekend (for now!)
Not sure how much of your target audience is the european fanbase, but EST evening times are not the best for us, as they correspond to very early dawn in europe Hard to follow live, let alone to cast. That's why a lot of foreign tournaments and events are organized for the weekends early afternoon EST time, which is the evening in europe, and the morning in australia.
My favourite part is the way the cast alternates between Kiante ruthlessly deconstructing everything the players have ever said or done and giggling like a schoolgirl whenever SirJolt or Sayle say something funny.
Production on the stream is excellent too, the overlays are very pretty.

You should PM Torenhire if you won your group and want to know who you have to play, if you're playing ahead of the casts. Only one group has been cast so far.

Hey guys, just an update - ThSL is definitely going on today, we're just going to start once TSL4 is finished. I imagine that'll be probably sometime around 8am KST but we'll see.
Next time you guys cast a ZvZ try to get a zerg player who knows more about the match-up. It's important to make note of small variations in BOs in the beginning (for instance 9pool speed vs overpool lair). maybe harem?
Kiante was pretty spot on with the analysis, i shoulda just played standard, i freakin never ever ever cheesed in BW. In last game vs redtooth i thought "oh well i crushed his double stargate on hbr, surely hes not gonna do it again so ill just kill him with mutas, and then i completely disregarded alllll the freakin signs, just like i generally play BW more like singleplayer than multiplayer ^^ was fun though, i only feel bad for 538, he was pretty sad after the losses and i coulda given him a chance by not being an idiot
Kiante or whoever's controlling the stream, how are you changing the text and scores and such? Have you got premade images or are you using some sort of overlay manager, or what? I'd like to use whatever it is when I cast if possible ;0
I'm sorry for the horrific mic quality this time around. I had a backup mic, but it died when I was setting up and I couldn't revive it, so I had to use the on-board mic from the years-old mac I use to play BW. Back to my normal mic next week <3

Meapack: I thought you played really well; the mistakes you made (mostly in goon control) were 100% fixable, so I'm looking forward to seeing you in another tournament sometime soon :D
On August 18 2012 08:52 N.geNuity wrote: thanks for the cast ^^. I'm pretty sure I gg'd the one game but the replay didn't catch it. Even so I'm sure I gg'd in the channel as well. Don't want to be bm :/
I may have much to learn from you of how to play brood war but I could teach you volumes on how to give shit and take none.
Weird maps lead to weird strats--and occasionally the immortalization of otherwise forgettable players. His play against Terran on Monty Hall--as exemplified in this game and another against SlayerS_`BoxeR`, remains the only thing that otherwise-obscure Brood War player Silver is remembered for.

No set date for first set of RO16 just yet - the whole tournament wasn't played at once so we've got a short break while RO16 is played

still missing a few RO16 games, but I'll sit down and give us a schedule for the entire RO16 this weekend. Games were "due" on Tuesday but like Kiante said it's kind of a soft deadline.

All of them are important but i think ReKrul will probaby take it just because he's such a beast at the game (0_0 those reavers *shiver*) but all of them have a really good chance of winning. Liquid'drone is pretty badass as well either him or ReKrul but GOO KIANTE THE BORING TOSS

I remember N.genuity helping me correct some stuff on on the SoulKey fanclub and he's a regular poster i see him everywhere and he loves KPOP (:D)
Aw Kiante, no mention of my cancer zerg playstyle? I've realized that my proxy hatcheries can still be considered cancerous in the sense that if you don't detect that form of cancer soon enough you usually just kinda die.

Just wanted to say that I really love this. My love goes out to everyone, and Kiante, I really like to fall asleep to your commentary voice - no homo :D
We had to postpone one of the Semifinals because someone had some family stuff going on, but the Torenhire Starleague Semifinals are going to be broadcast this week!
Tuesday, Oct 09 9:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00)!!!
See you all there, and thanks for making the tournament so awesome.
hilarious discussion about the lair morphing. especially funny because the hatch might actually have survived had it not been morphed - because once you start morphing the lair, it stops regenerating. it's definitely plausible that it'd have regenerated the one or two extra hits needed to survive xD

really? it stops regenerating? This lair morph gets even more hillarious now :D
In my defense, I woke up at 745 am to play my games at 8, I was hardly awake for the first two games . my only regret is that they could have had the potential to be game three quality, but I completely blew them. At least good lols :D
Our macbook, who lives on Jolt's desk, May you bring me Brood War, And forgive those who Brood War against me, Blessed art thou among laptops, And blessed be thine bugs <3
OMG THE MANLY VOICE OF MANLYFESTO7 WILL MAKE A COMEBACK??
Now that is something the get absolutely hyped for, if quantum instability finals are not enough for you xD
Anyway thanks for the great cast as usual and grats to Chill and Drone! Also shoutout to SirJolt's mcbook, may it bring yet more bugged games for our viewing (or is it listening, since that's like a radio broadcast) pleasure.
I poked around a little bit and couldn't find anything, so I was wondering if someone here might aid me... I'm looking for the song that SirJolt used as the background for the group selection video. It's quite good. Anyone?
On October 10 2012 12:45 Chill wrote: LOL those vods are significantly worse than i remember playing hahahaha wow
I thought you played really well in the games I saw. I guess things could have gone worse for the ones I couldn't see, but Z never plays well in bugged reps
I love how SirJolt never cursed at the beginning of the tournament, but as it progressed and he spent more time with Kiante his use of the word fuck increased
I don't like to depend on cursing to get a point across, but the emphasis it adds is far too good for comedy to ignore. In Ireland, people tend to swear buckets, but I hang wanted to bring that to the commentary track, just in case.
Fortunately, Kiante curses a lot, so I figured it probably wouldn't hurt
chill i just wanted to say i love you and you're the best and i know you're going to win in the finals!!!! holy crap i can't wait for you to pwn everyone in life because you're so awesome. Chill, i remember the time that you just were SO CHILL. THE ORIGINAL CHILL. i wish my name was chill but it's all i can do to keep saying it to myself over and over again GOOD LUCK IN THE FINALS
Oh my gosh.... MANLIFESTO IS CASTING?!?! I am tuning in no matter what now. Where did he go? TL is simply not at all the same without him. T_T I'm glad he's showing some signs of life, at least.
Some Canadian postal worker held the package up to the light, and was so impressed by the sick looking decals, that he just stole them and resealed the package.
On December 05 2012 14:31 Skeggaba wrote: Frame the cardboard IMO
why would u frame sick cardboard decals like that. u gotta bling your car with that shit. imo
Frame the cardboard, and use the stickers (once they arrive) on the car (but with AT LEAST three layers of glass fibre/epoxi over it to protect it). IMO
I've had my TL sticker on my truck for almost 6 months now and it's still in pristine condition. From experience, the only thing that will mess your vinyl up is if you put it in a place where rocks/bugs can hit it at 65 mph (so don't put it on the front of your car) and if you put it somewhere where snow/ice will freeze on top of it.
There is still one TL Logo sticker left, trying to decide a good way to give it out. Maybe if someone makes a ThSL Summary video or Pimpest Plays I'll mail it to em.. :D
Or if someone with video making skills PM's me and helps me out with something... :3
