Format will be slightly different this season compared to the first three. This season, there still will be 32 players, but group stages will be in a round robin format. what is round robin? + Show Spoiler +
each player in the group playes each other a single time in a bo1. Example group A: Flash, Stork, Jaedong, reality. Flash vs Stork Jaedong vs Reality Reality vs Flash Stork vs Jaedong Flash vs Jaedong Stork vs Reality Stork 3 Advances, Flash 2 Advances, Jaedong 1 Eliminated, Reality 0 Eliminated
In case of a tied scenario, direct matches will be applied, meaning if both players have 2 points he who won their direct match advances. Only one case scenario where there can be tie breakers. That is if 3 players go 2-1 and the last player goes 0-3. In that case there will be a 3 player tie breaker with a BO1 with the same maps of the group stages.
Tie breakers eventually will be played in the week beetwen Group stages and RO16.
After that the 16 players advance into a single elimination bracket as usual First map is pre-decided and losers pick RO16 BO3: first map Neo medusa RO8 BO5: Othello (3) SEMIFINALS: BO5 New Heartbreak Ridge (2) THIRD PLACE MATCH: BO5 Icarus (4) FINALS BO7: Neo Medusa (3)

I heard of some people having trouble watching VODs on twitch. I' m going to make a youtube account where the vods will be uploaded so you can watch them there. Hopefully we will have other casters as well and FPVOD are always welcome.

Just out of curiosity, how will the groups be selected? It would be kinda cool to do it FIFA World Cup style, where you put the "presumable" top 8 guys in pot 1, next 8 guys in pot 2, then pot 3, then pot 4. Then you randomly draw 1 guy from a pot to Group A then B all the way to H. And if there are too many protosses, you can put like a rule saying "no two zergs can be in the same group" or something like that, so there isn't like 5 all protoss groups and 2 group that has all the zergs and terrans. Like in 2010, FIFA put a rule saying "No two African teams can be in the same group, or no two South American teams can be in same group" Just a thought.
I just realised i have been ignoring two questions:
To respond to harem' s question, what version of Jade is the current one? i never bodered with NEO JADE, already that map has 12 expos and i don' t agree with the changes they made. On sniper ridge they made some good changes and also on Ground zero, i feel.
To don_kyuhote i have been using that system all along. (about the 8 seeds system). It is a good idea to divide zergs and terrans in different groups, i fear for the balance of the tournament do. Hopefully more zergs and Terrans will sign up.

Why not use whatever version of Jade is in the iccup map pack, so people can actually practice the right version?

Harem told me Savi isn't a smurf. I think we should let him in but ultimately it's up to the organizer to decide after watching some replays. No need to stir up shit about it here.

If someone could commit to organizing replays, so i can cast them. I would really like to provide cover for the Tournament, unlike season3 where i was busy, and only casted semifinals and finals. But without someone organizing replays (puyi is busy) its gonna be impossible.
Could someone do a brief Translation in Russian and post this on defiler.ru, linking this thread. In season 2 we had quite a few people from there (especially terrans), so it would be good for them to know about it.

Never heard of this map before...
If its the same map I'm thinking of, it some weird 5-player (yes, 5 different spawn locations) map from like 2007. Was used for 2v2. IIRC each of the mains had two entrances (one blocked by a chrysalis you can kill, the other by minerals), both with a permanent disruption web over them. Also there was some neutral creep colony in each base too. It would be a really bad idea to use this map for a 1v1 tournament lol

Yep. Those are going to be the maps. Aldo the should be played in the order Othello, Neo Aztec, Jade. In the Round of 16 instead first map is pre-decided then losers-pick from the map poo.
When we get other 2 players (and hopefully a couple more for subs) i can do the sorting so everyone can know their group and opponents.
I got people to help with the reps so i added the event to the BW calender.
BTW do the the change in the format, even if you do not pass your group, you should send in the replay if you won even a single game

He's been in the previous DRIT/DRTL with no problems about whether his skill is too high or not. He just happened to have grinded enough games on iCCup to peak at 3010, allowing him to sign up for YSL/ASL2. If he made it to the ro16 in YSL, then it might be a problem, but I don't think anyone has a problem with him competing.
Well...there has to be borders...and you can just grind games to increase your points and reach the next level? i thoughts its just skill at a certoin point :/
and i didnt know he was in the previous tours..maybe he just got better than the last time?
(obviously not only playing vs D- for 500 games and you get like C+ without a loss...)
I think themarine' s skill level is fine to play here. What has always confused me is why his name is themarine and he playes protoss. It confused me when i played him and confuses me still now

iCCup's ranking system is pretty bad, you can just grind games and get C- pretty easily. If I played more and wanted to, it wouldn't be hard to reach C-, even though my approximate skill level is only D/D+.
I can confirm that TheMarine is only D+ in skill, he worked really hard to qualify for ASL2 and YSL but both leagues are above his skill level. Maybe by the time the next DRIT or DRTL comes around, he'll be C- level, but right now he's just a really solid D+ player.
how can you just by play more games reach a higher rank? no matter how many games i play, im D- D.... just curious how...do you look for easy opponents?

Well obviously you gotta be able to beat at least some people. But if you get +130 points on MOTW maps vs same rank people, and only lose 50 points per loss vs same rank, if you win one out of every 3 games, you still come out 30 points ahead.

This. No offense to TheMarine but it's not really as if he is astronomically better than the other top players in the D ranks or in this tournament.
Yes,babo i am not better than most top tier D rank players(maybe we are even, dunno)and im not saying i am.i just happened to try really hard to qualify for YSL and ASL2 since there was no individual league that i can participate in so i just started to grind the ladder all day to reach C-.

Psyonicreaver had a very good idea for the next season i think i will implement it, which is to divide the group-stages in two parts with different dates, as to more people can play.
I'm looking for somebody to practice with for this tournament.
I'll be on from 18:00 to 22:00 CET. I'm fairly certain I won't win a lot of games so grinding out a MU would be good so I can win against at least one race and if I get lucky my group will be stacked with that one race.
Soo PM me if you are going to be online at that time and we can talk!

If you guys acknowledge this and don't abide by those rankings, then the leagues shouldn't be named "D rank something something", should be "low rank something something". Because you're naming it after the iCCup rankings, then saying that the iCCup rankings doesn't give a good picture of the skill you guys want... Or so that's what I understand from this.

I think the key factor as explained in the previous season was the ability to maintain a rank vs. achieving it for 1-2 games then losing it. It is natural that the best D rank players will constantly hit C- and never maintain it. Therefore, their inability to maintain C- by definition makes them D+, even if they occasionally hit C- (something that any D+ player can do on a good win streak on MotW or something).
@Group C/Pebble444: If I am converting the time correctly (as of this edit, it is 07:47 for me, 13:47 in Madrid (CEST), so a difference of 6, so 19:00 CEST is 13:00 for me), I will have to be about 30 minutes late on Saturday for my games. I'm sorry about this inconvenience, work -_-;

That would make sense if it weren't for the fact that there are very few D/D- players who actually play in this and so few C- players who actually play in ASL.

And why not cast your own group? Even Kiante is casting his bad play, just with a bit shame :p (love your work Kiante ^^x)
I would love to cast pebble's group but I can't due to technical issues ): The reason people don't do that is because of professional integrity, he is the organizer and it is impossible to remain objective when you know your own mistakes and etc. Too easy to focus on your own shit as in what you wanted to do, what you fucked up, what you did right, etc. vs what the other player did.
Which isnt too bad either. Its like a refreshing variatian, as the caster can explain why he did something and with the view of an observer, talk what was good and what not....so it would become a bit like play analysis.... or you see it as a good training for being an objective caster. But i understand your argument and its ok if someone dont like to cast his own play.

You will be playing the regular 3 games but you will start with -1 points as opposed to others that start with 0 points. In the case of tied score, direct matches apply, so your handicap is not to big but not to small. I hope everybody understands this decision. (luckily you ended in group D, there is already a TvP, so people will have practiced the matchup)

DRIT4 group stages were exactly 12 hours ago from this post.
Also according to what I've heard from FireHaven today you two are supposed to play for DRTL3 10 hours from now.
I think you'll have to consult an organizer about whether you could qualify for making up the DRIT4 group stages because I remember pebble adamantly denying the possibility of rescheduling those. If it's possible I'm still willing to play.
If organizers still need the replay between me and (Obelisco) let me know. I was out all day after playing today.

I think you'll have to consult an organizer about whether you could qualify for making up the DRIT4 group stages because I remember pebble adamantly denying the possibility of rescheduling those. If it's possible I'm still willing to play.
If organizers still need the replay between me and (Obelisco) let me know. I was out all day after playing today.
i talked to firehaven yesterday we both agreed to play later....

We did but it immediately disconnected both of us. We also tried game ranger to no avail. It took some time and mine was running short, so I gave him the win.. no hard feelings, I wouldn't do much in the game/next round anyway if it happened.

ah. ok.
Still need replays of:
Nalzeck vs Opalonalufa
Pebble444 vs Mellial Pebble444 vs savi[wok]
yes im going to send you the replay
also - my group was a 3 way tie and was supposed to be finished today
Did you send the replay to DRITOURNAMENT@yahoo.com ? Because it's not in the inbox.
As for tie-breaker, play the the opponents on the map you played on in group stage. If player A goes 2-0, players B goes 1-1, player C goes 0-2, player A and player B advances. If player A, B, C all go 1-1, repeat the process.
Still missing replays from savi vs mellial, savi vs mmrhar and mellial vs mmrhar, from my group (G), so send them in or directly to L_master, and replays from group D are missing.

Only one case scenario where there can be tie breakers. That is if 3 players go 2-1 and the last player goes 0-3. In that case there will be a 3 player tie breaker with a BO1 with the same maps of the group stages.
Tie breakers eventually will be played in the week beetwen Group stages and RO16.
not really. I can't play 1900 CEST, I can play before that: 1730 CEST, or right now.

Tie breakers can be played whenever you guys want. I see people getting organized on their own nicely, so if you need help pm me or cobalt or don_kyuhote, if not play away and gl. Please try and finish the games before Wensday.
Group F: Stratos and lexeme you can play your game, try Hamachi. It should work nicely...
If not if you want you can play chess instead and settle it that way.
Sadly my stream was not working well at all today. Does anyone know how to download video' s from twitch and attach them thogheter? that way i could have vods for the group statges that can be viewed afterward.
I fowarded all the replays of groups A, C, ang G to Lmaster and i casted the rest, i hope he will cast later today.
tomorrow will update the OP with results, vods, and replays.
Nagi tells me his group, Group C, is still in a tiebreaker state atm. I assume L_Master is going to cast the submitted replays from that group regardless, even though advancements haven't yet been decided?

Yes,
and also as last tournament A1-->B2, B1-->A2 etc. opposite side of bracket
Is map 1 for ro16 Othello or Medusa? http://i.imgur.com/62x0g.gif seems to suggest Medusa, but elsewhere in the OP is this: "RO16 BO3: first map Othello RO8 BO5: Neo Medusa (3) SEMIFINALS: BO5 New Heartbreak Ridge (2) THIRD PLACE MATCH: BO5 Icarus (4) FINALS BO7: Neo Medusa (3)"
Alright so all VODS are up on twitch (My Twitch Link), and being uploaded to Youtube as we speak. I'll edit my post with the VODs themselves when uploading finishes.
On September 17 2012 12:58 Sentenal wrote: Whats the status with Group G? Are they in tiebreakers?
Yes.
Im not sure if they have been scheduled yet.
Group G is done. Savi 2-1 (W vs. mmahir, W vs. mellial, L vs. pebble444) mmahhir 2-1 (L vs. Savi, W vs. mellial, W vs. pebble444) mellial 1-2 (W vs. pebble444, L vs Savi, L vs. mmahhir) pebble444 1-2 (W vs Savi, L vs mmahhir, L vs mellial) Savi wins the group courtesy of head to head win vs mmahhir. No tie breakers
I think we're just waiting for Group C and Group D tie breakers to finish. Should happen sometime this week.
Maybe you guys should allow late signups to be 'backups' because 8 people didn't show up and I'm pretty sure we could easily get another 8 to show up if the sign ups weren't closed.
On September 18 2012 01:17 don_kyuhote wrote: ro16 lineups are on liquipedia page. Everybody should know who they're facing except for people in Group C and Group D.
L3gendary and I have scheduled our tie break for Thursday. I've let babo know as well, waiting on response from him. Ideally if he's available that time too, we can get the ties done and over with that day.
edit: babo says he's ok. results will probably be emailed before end of Thursday.
After that the 16 players advance into a single elimination bracket as usual First map is pre-decided and losers pick RO16 BO3: first map Othello RO8 BO5: Neo Medusa (3) SEMIFINALS: BO5 New Heartbreak Ridge (2) THIRD PLACE MATCH: BO5 Icarus (4) FINALS BO7: Neo Medusa (3)
So the Ro16 and onward, other than the first map, its loser picks. So whats the map pool that people can pick from, since I assume it can't be just any map?

Map pool is Neo Medusa, Othello, New HBR, Neo Aztec, Icarus, Jade and Matchpoint. The only thing im not sure is which map is first in RO16 and RO8, OP has them both listed as first map, one in the picture and the other in a spoiler where it explains the group stage

Damn, I don't want to win my group and have to TvP twice x_x I'd rather get second and TvP -> PvT (and crush Obelisco maybe) ^-^
I remember Yellow or Boxer (iirc) intentionally dropping games in order to avoid each other or something along those lines, might be tricky to do this in a tiebreaker scenario but I guess I'll have to see how it goes xD

Well. I guess I'm being honest about it, so if the organizers feel like this is not okay I will give it my all (although frankly I did that last time vs. L3gendary and looked like a fool haha), but I don't feel like this was nearly as frowned upon in the BW pro scene when it happened.
I would have to drop a game to the person who wins the tiebreakers 2-0 and then I would have to know I can beat the next player, however I don't feel that comfortable with l3gendary/lurkers to be 100% about my ability to do this should Nagi beat him xP

Well I tried to be nice and say maybe but we both know that the only chance you had was playing me with my own people, my Protoss brethren. Never forget that 1 DA build made it 2-3 and not 3-2. You being Z (proven) or T (my proficiency in this MU was proven vs. Nagi and EssBee imo), I will destroy you kaykay? ^o^ Pray I don't get 2nd, son.

No I don't actually, I only play BW while intoxicated so my memory of events is spotty ^^ Yes I know your path to the finals will be easier or w/e if you can try to get rid of me sooner, but unfortunately L3gendary has my number so the most I can do is hope that Nagi doesn't beat him xD We'll figure it out once we get there ok? Just remember that Jade game and imagine that my PvT is better than that.

Once you accept the fact people cheese and learn the responses it actually becomes pretty fun as their cheeses fail and you can laugh at their futile follow-up cheese.
Generic advice: suspect a cheese? Scout early. Suspect follow-up cheese? Keep the scv alive and pull it out at an appropriate time or just sneak another one out.

Now you can understand the tears that all D ranked Terrans shed at one point due to Protoss cheese. My advice is just learn how to PvP People should really just man up and play 1 race against all 3 races, instead of avoiding mirror match up, but that's just me.

Too many toss were signing up so to avoid the tournament becoming PvP, players who signed up after a certain point were forced to offrace against Protoss opponents.

Rlentless and I are still working on a date to play. He has an exceptionally busy schedule this week, so the games may just get played on a whim if/when he happens to have time.
@Pebble - I'm thinking of casting these games on Tuesday or Thursday night (depending on how soon they get played). If you wanna take 4 groups and leave the other 4 to me that should work out really well.

What's more important than double elimination is making sure all 32 people show up for group stage. Solving that problem would almost double the amount of games played this season. Out of 8 groups, only group C and group G had all 4 people show up, whereas group B and group H, only 2 people showed up. That needs to be solved first and foremost.
G1 - He went 4 gate, I went 2 gate reaver. Held the 4 gate okay, moved out, promptly got shuttle sniped. Then just generally played horrible from there. Pretty sure I lost like 3+ shuttle/reavers that game, just got a new mouse a few days ago after the old one died and just have no feel or micro. It was so bad I lost a reaver and shuttle to one cannon =(
G2 - I went core first, he went 2 gate. Beautifully managed to miss my second pylon by shift clicking and letting go of shift too soon. 1 Zealot v 5 doesnt work so well. \
G3 - Same situation as G2, only remember pylon. Still micro-ed like shit and quickly died.
A nasty combination of inability to micro + generally bad play = quick 3-0 in Sentenals favor.
I'm planning on casting this (Ro8) tomorrow, and I'll get it calendared and update when I have an official time.

Okay also time to start talking about next season:
I was thinking some changes:
Maps decided by polls again, seems better. I was thinking to have pre-decided maps for each stage of the tournament, not only group stages. I am trying to find a format that allows players to play more games. The problem with round robin is that if 1 player doesn' t show, only 3 games are played. If 2 don' t show, only 1 game is played; so its not so optimal.
So here is my idea: instead of sorting and seeding into groups directly, there will be a preliminary stage: based on your ELO D ranks points, from Birdie http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=368754 there will be a 5 game long swiss round with every 32 players in one group. what is swiss round? + Show Spoiler +
Players play against the player closest of rank to them. Meaning for example, if Shuruken, Babo, Prophecy and psyonic reaver sign up, the first first and second play each other and the third and fourth play each other. After that, the 2 players who won play each other and the losers play each other. Since there will be 32 players in one group, 16 will be tied at 1 win and 16 at 1 loss after the first round. ELO points again will determinate who plays vs who
The results of the swiss round will then put ALL the players into the group stages. This way it will be possible to cut througt people that don' t show and group stages will be fuller. Or it could be that the top players of the swiss round get seeded directly into the RO16. That would require proper planning to make it balanced as for the number of players being seeded. In any case i am open to new ideas.
This way people will play vs players of supposily their skill, the tournament will last longer (two months)
The swiss round system seems confusing. I see there are different implementations, but you're saying that the matchmaking should be based only on elo, rather than wins? Wouldn't that punish high ranked players? For instance, let's say Psyonic Reaver gets to play Babo, Prophecy, Artanis, Obelisco and Essbee, and then ends up with a 2-3 score or something, while a lower ranked player would only play against other lower ranked players, and ends up with a 4-1 score.
Shouldn't you instead play the player who have the score that is the closest to yours? And only when several players have the same score, you go by elo rank.
I kind of like the round robin system though. It's definately better than the old 2-0, 2-1, 1-2, 0-2 system, because you know who you're playing, so you can reschedule. Maybe you could make it into groups of 6 or 8 instead, if you want to extent the group stages. The advantage of the swiss round system seems to be that you don't really need a min/max amount of players. One major problem though is that if a match gets delayed, it will affect everybody, because all games needs to be played before the next round can be announced. How would you deal with that? Would you enforce some game deadline?
I'm in favor of predetermined map instead of loser pick system. OSL and MSL had predetermined map, and it should help people prepare more since they don't have to practice on all the maps in the pool. I like the round robin system. I think it can work if you allow rescheduling

Yeah in fact that just occured to me. The reason why i made it losers pick in the first place was to give the upper hand to more feeble players. But then again if they win that match then the other guy picks. Anyway its nice to have a change.
@ninini you got exactly the point but missed the system. Maybe i explained myself poorly. IT would be players playing each other based on results. ONLY the first round to start off, would be based on the ELO points. The first match.
So yeah it basically works like you sugjested: you play the player who has the score that is the closest to yours And only when several players have the same score, you go by elo rank. So basically if obelisco wins vs babo, next round babo would probably face the loser of say psyonic reaver vs essbee. Because they would be both at 0-1 and probly have the highest ELO score. The guy who loses again that game, at that point, would play versus a another player near top rank, that has as him gone 0-2. If he loses again, he is 0-3, and would most defenetevly go vs a middle rank player.(the highest player with ELO ranking at 0-3).
So this system favores players near each others skill level to play.At least in the first 2, 3 rounds.
Another way to make it more variable and more of a gamble, is to have best of 3' s for example in each round.
Even more extreme could be to have each 1v1 be 3 games. So players could go for example 3-0, 2-1, 1-2, 0-3. In this case it is even more of a gamble to know versus what skill level you will play. And also people could lose/drop a game if they Postpone their match, knowing the results of others. One way to deal with this would be not having results out until everybody played.
And if this system is used, good point ninini there has to be some deadline because matches need to be played. Yes i will enforce it. Even penalize it maybe, giving them not only no wins but even some losses maybe. Need to think this one out.

Please no more Medusa, Jade, AND Aztec in map pool ^^

Just Jade kthnx~
Can and will do
I appreciate the fast response but let me explain why - all 3 are nightmares for TvP, 2 for PvZ. With loser-pick, it thus becomes very difficult in some MU ^^ Even without this it makes map pool skewed!

Maybe its time for a council, some players with map knowledge to decide a mappool for all D Rank leagues and tours....would make it easier to have balanced maps for our skilllevel and map preparations when different tours have to be played in a short time.
I don't think it should be that formal - just check TLPD for map balances, combine with the knowledge that reverse ramp is designed to help P in leagues because of their poor showing as a whole, cliffs favor T and Z for muta harass, ridges favor Z in ZvP (think SR lurk contain), unbuildable center hurts T pushing, 3 player maps almost all Z>P and P>T in theory, etc. and use this knowledge to make a more balanced pool as a whole, not necessarily fully banning certain maps for imbalance ^^
I'm in favor of keeping our current round robin group stage, rather than some confusing swiss system. Maybe you could seed groups based on Birdie's ranks or previous season performance, its up to you if you would want to do that. Personally I would seed based on standings from the previous season, into round robin groups.
As for maps, just take a big list of commonly played maps, and poll them. Pre-decide map lineups.
It's neo aztec, not aztec the drops on the natural are annoying. Even neo medusa(I hate that map) has a higher TvP winrate, the maps seem to be pretty balanced. Even NHBR and Icarus are terran favored. oh oc othello... I'm sure terran can't win cause of the map pool lol. Idk about PvZ cause I suck, but I don't care about the maps, as long as blue storm isn't on the map pool, IMO the map pool should change for entertainment purposes rather than to strike the perfect balance.
Not all maps can be Tau Cross and Fighting Spirit. As long as it's not broken like Tears of the Moon, or weird, like Troy, Holy World, Plasma, I'm ok with most maps (including Blue Storm )
